Email: otypesharingiscaring@gmail.com Matt Duffy has been a resident of the central coast since 2004 and has a deep connection to this community. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 11 years old and has had several life-altering complications due to the disease. Matt was a commercial fisherman on the central coast for many years. In 2014, he lost his career due to vision loss. After 14 surgeries, he was left with less than 40% of his vision. Instead of becoming despondent or giving up hope, Matt enrolled in a specialized course to teach him how to re-enter the world as a legally blind individual. Through that experience, Matt cultivated a new dream of wanting to help others. He had found a new purpose and took on the complicated steps of navigating our county with almost no sight. Matt enrolled in Cuesta College and succeeded in graduating with high honors. He earned an AA Transfer Degree in Psychology and an Associate Degree in Social & Behavioral Sciences. Matt is currently studying psychology at CalPoly. In addition to graduating from Cuesta and learning how to navigate the area as someone with low vision, Matt has been gifted the opportunity to care for little brother, Scott. Scott is chronically ill with a rare disease called Mucopolysaccharidosis, and Matt is responsible for coordinating his care. In 2017, Matt moved in with his current roommate, a new mother, and her infant daughter. Matt became an integral part of that little girl’s life by taking on the role of everything from late-night feedings to scraped knees to health scares. When she is scared or unsure, she turns to Matt for confidence. In April 2020, Matt’s care team informed him that he has stage 5 renal failure, and will need a kidney transplant to live. We believed we had more time, but it’s become painfully apparent that things are moving incredibly fast. Matt is becoming sicker by the day. The Stanford Kidney Transplant Program has accepted him; however, his health will not survive the 10 year wait for a deceased donor. Matt has the unfortunate added difficulty of having O+ blood, which comes with one of the most prolonged wait times. We are avidly searching for a living kidney donor. Please help us save Matt’s life. To take Stanford's pre-screening donor questionnaire visit:https://www.stanfordhealthcarelivedonors.org/

I know I have not posted in a while, but life has been physically taxing. I want to give an update on how I’m doing, and on the search for viable match. I am continuing to Cal poly; however, I recently caught a stomach bug that put me in the hospital, and although I have recovered from the bug. I am still very weak from it, and have not gained any strength back. I’ve had to take less classes next quarter because my energy level is too low for me to attend full-time. I’m still hopeful that my miracle will come, and I can build a future and accomplish my goal Of becoming a mental health professional and helping other people through difficult times in their life.

Around 3:30 pm today Matt got the call from Stanford saying they believe they have an eligible kidney for him! He is currently on his way to Stanford. Stanford told him that sometimes they will have you travel up there and then find out the kidney isn't viable. We are asking for all the positive thoughts and prayers that this will be the perfect match and surgery will be successful.

This kidney is a gift from a deceased donor so please keep the donor's loved ones in your heart as they are dealing with the impossible of losing someone they love.

I would like to take a moment and publicly thank my cousin Amber for stepping up and going through the nine months of tests, interviews, and more tests. Sadly it did not work out at the last moment, but I will never forget how U were willing to help.
As for now I have been activated for a double transplant and my transplant team is reviewing possible cadaver donors. That means that I am living next to my phone hoping it will ring, and trying to live as normal life as possible. That includes continuing to attend classes and work towards my degree. Attempting 14 units at Cal Poly is difficult with how sick I feel but I don’t want CKD to derail me from my goals; however, the recovery process will make it so I have to take a quarter off. I will be living in a hospital run recovery house next to Stanford for a month after the surgery and then spending another month at my dads so I can stay close to the hospital where I will be seeing the doctor twice a week for the first month and once a week the second. I have no idea how long it will take to get a cadaver donor but I know that my activation status is good for a year so I am crossing my fingers. I’m unsure about what challenges I will be facing after the surgery. I know my primary source of income is scholarships, but I know I will fight to stay alive because I have a lot to offer this world and I want the opportunity to prove it.
