We finally found the new Rebel Creamery ice cream bar at Albertsons.

Luke loved it!
Burgin thought it was good but a bit too sweet!

They are a little smaller than the KETO brand ice cream bars & very easy on blood sugar.

🔑Consistency Is Key🔑

The food we eat provides consistent results. That consistency is important when basal changes happen.

I’m used to titrating basal up & down due to hormones but this decrease is different. I have no clue what has caused her needs to go down & it really doesn’t matter. She needs what she needs & that need will change again soon!

Safe, happy & healthy is the goal around here. We are able to achieve that because of being consistent!

If we can do it, so can you! 💪🏼

I find the changes (complexity of the body) so interesting!

đź’™Back To Basicsđź’™

There will be a time in your journey when you feel like you FINALLY have it all figured out. Then suddenly something will happen that causes everything to go haywire. It might be sickness, growth, hormones, a new sport, change in weather or 1 million other things.

When this happens, remove as many variables as possible and go back to basics.

Stick with very simple low carb meals that you are confident in dosing. It’s not the time to try out a new food!!

Treat lows with precise amounts of glucose only! Using food for lows will add to the madness.

When adjusting dosing, make one change at a time. Do not change basal & meal dosing all at once! This will make it easier to determine if your issue is basal or meal dosing.

If looping & you get stuck on a rollercoaster, get to 0 IOB and open loop (turn loop off). For me, this clears the playing field and I can determine which piece of the puzzle is the issue. I’m pretty confident in meal dosing so this really helps me see what basal is doing without the help of loop. If basal seems good without loop on then I know the issue is another setting (ISF). If she is having wacky rises or drops with loop off, basal is the issue.

I hope this helps! đź’™

đź’™Eat Real Food
đź’™Use the Law of Small Numbers

A few meals from the week are pictured below. No recipe is required. We simply pick a protein, pick a veggie & carry on with life!

Normal blood sugar is possible & it doesn’t have to be complicated!

🦌Deer Steak & Gravy🦌

Compliments of the blonde assassin’s hunting skills!

Tenderized Backstrap - dip in egg, dip in almond flour, fry in bacon grease
Brown Gravy (recipe in comments)
Riced Cauliflower
Green Beans

Burgin needs .5 Novolog & 2-3 R for a meal like this depending on her activity level.

A happy belly, normal blood sugar & peaceful sleep rank really high on our list! 🙌🏼

Why use the law of small numbers?

Today gives us the perfect example. After days of rain, the sun came out & their neighborhood friends started knocking on the door asking them to play football right after lunch.

If you have spent any time managing a T1D kid, you know that exercise/running immediately following a dose of insulin (especially rapid acting insulin) can lead to dangerous drops in blood sugar.

Do you think my kid would rather say I can eat whatever and just dose OR I can play anytime my friends come over?

Let the pic answer that question for you!

Would you believe that these are NOT potatoes!?!

We used to eat something we called cowboy soup. It had potatoes & some other unfavorable ingredients in it, so we haven’t had it since diagnosis.

The kids recently asked if I could make something similar to cowboy soup. I ran across this recipe last night & it did not disappoint! All the flavor of cowboy soup, minus the wild blood sugar.

Recipe in comments!
I doubled the recipe, didn’t use the onion, used two bags of radishes instead of turnips & let it all simmer in the crockpot all day. 🥣ENJOY🥣

This one is for the girls!

Here is your reminder to track your cycle even if your daughter has not started her cycle. ( I like the app Clue)

Burgin has been needing 120-130% overrides for almost a week. As my cycle approached, she would need the most significant amount and corrections starting about 2-3AM which is typically her lowest basal rate and most insulin sensitive time. Towards the end of the day her needs would go back close to normal and then shoot back up in the early AM and be more resistant throughout the large portion of the day.
Yesterday was day 2 of my cycle and I was able to use no overrides all day. I took a gamble leaving them off last night & *sigh of relief* back to normal!! 🙌🏼

🦌 She shoots like a GIRLl! 🦌
Anyone need a lesson?

We are at the point in this journey that diabetes just takes a backseat to LIVING!

She isn’t worried about what other kids are eating! A candy cane or christmas tree cake isn’t at the top of her wish list. We don’t search out new recipes. Instead, she is busy searching out the best hunting spot.

Diabetes doesn’t have to consume all time and all thoughts. We are here to tell you, it’s possible to calm the chaos! If we can do it, so can you!
