Decorating Daisy for Women’s Cancer

The Daisy Project, a community bead art project to focus awareness on issues of women’s cancers was first sponsored by Isadora’s Wonderful Things Beads on South Main in Joplin Mo, and has been traveling about the Four States raising awareness, though she has recently been in retirement.
Daisy is a full-length manikin, donated for this project by the Ozark Area Girl Scout Council. She is being covered completely with beads, including names of cancer survivors and victims as a memorial and symbol of courage in the face of these deadly diseases. Once completed, she will be auctioned, all proceeds going to local charitable organizations involved in the fight against women’s cancers.
It has been more than 10 years since Daisy was first conceived and begun. She is nearly 90% covered with names of loved ones beaded in memory and prayer. Some have added their own names, both in hope and victory against these frightening diseases. Millions of beads and hundreds of hours have been lovingly spent creating this wonderful work of art. Many volunteers have beaded on Daisy, and many more have given donations and requested that names be placed on her. A lot of memories have been shared, many tears have flowed, and Daisy grows more heartbreakingly beautiful with each passing day. More than three hundred names embellish her, with more added daily and room for many more; from such stellar names as Ingrid Bergman and Julia Child to wives, grandmothers, moms, sisters, aunts, daughters, friends: victims and survivors. Daisy herself is named for Juliette “Daisy” Low, founder of Girl Scouts, who died of breast cancer. Women’s cancers show no mercy, know no boundaries, respect no age, position, fame, power or wealth. It is a sisterhood that no woman wants to join.
Everyone is invited to participate in this very special project. There is a still a lot more room for names, and we encourage everyone to take part so that she may be completed and auctioned or sold. Participation is free; though donations of beads, glue, and cash for purchasing supplies are encouraged. You need have no special artistic talent or creativity. Sandy Parrill or LaStacia will be glad to help you in placing a name or creating a design. If you wish to be involved but cannot, we will be glad to bead a name or remembrance for you, for a donation of any size. There are also many donated beads and supplies that you may use if you cannot afford a donation. Very few—and fortunate—people have not had their lives touched in some way by women’s cancer. The statistics tell us that one woman in five will have some form of cancer in her life. Daisy is a wonderful way to be involved with helping to raise awareness, and to help current and potential victims with their fight.

Daisy will be at the Parrillel Universe Studio in Joplin through the weekend if anyone would like to come visit and bead the name of a cancer victim on her,. It's free, beads and glue provided! Come have a hot cup of cider or tea and spend an hour or so with remembrance of a loved one or a prayer for a cancer survivor! Call for a good time to come, 417-825-1280

Daisy is home, she will be at the Parrillel Universe studio until the first week in January for anyone who would like to add names to her. Beads are available at no cost (tho contributions for future supplies are always welcome). I'll be glad to assist in any way. Plan a beading party and come help contribute to women's cancers awareness! Or come alone. Call for any more details and to schedule a time.

Those of you who have names of loved ones who have or have had any form of women's cancer to put on her, come amd spend an hour or two to remember them by placing the names to help Daisy raise awareness of women's cancers! Daisy will be joining the Joplin Region Artist Coalition show, ARTerior MOtives in the upstairs Gallery at Spiva Center for the Arts, opening November 6. Come enjoy the wonderful art by many talented and amazing local artists, visit with Daisy, read her diary and learn her story!
