Within the ECEI space (0-9 years of age) you may have seen that the role of the Key Worker has remained unchanged.

The main service area of Sierra Kids is the Key Worker Role which I conduct nationally with clients. The second service area is Parent Training, also conducted nationally.

Many of you have asked what the Key Worker role entails, so I thought tonight I would share with you all what the role looks like for me, and why I like to call it the 'Wrap Around Service'.

Traditionally when a young child was diagnosed with a disability, pre NDIS days, a Key Worker would be assigned to a family, often in the form of a Social Worker, sometimes an Allied Health professional. This person was the first point of contact for the family and could assist the family to apply for funding, find services as well as at times conduct therapy for the child, and provide emotional support for the family.

The role once NDIS came in, remained as part of the care team, and has expanded into a varied and individualised role for each family.

These are some of the supports I provide families as a Key Worker:

* Developmental assessments of children
* Skill Based Toolkits and Activities to practice at home
* Assisting parents and Carers to understand their child's plan
* Supporting parents as they head into an NDIS review
* Targeted developmental consultations about key milestones
* Upskill day care and school educators, sporting coaches, places of worship about the child's disability and support their inclusion to access and participate equitably
* Emotional support for parents and carers
* Speaking with other therapists around the child and hosting team meetings
* Assisting parents to understand their child's development
* Strategizing for setting supports up in the home

The Key Worker role is such an important part of what I do, yet I often feel it is quite an unknown aspect of the NDIS 'world'. To be a Key Worker you need to be either an Allied Health practitioner or an Early Childhood Teacher. I am an Early Childhood and Primary Teacher, an Education Consultant, and an Inclusion Coach.

If you wish to engage my services as a Key Worker for your child aged 9 and under, feel free to reach out. I am led by you and your child's situation as to the frequency of the service, and no two families are the same.
