The good news is that drug researchers aren’t giving up the fight. Our first-in-class novel antifungal is in late-stage investigation and development for multiple indications, including life-threatening fungal infections caused primarily by Candida (including C. auris) and Aspergillus species in hospitalized patients.

In the U.S., more than 7,000 people died of a fungal infection in 2021, compared with just 450 recorded deaths in 1969.

The European Union/European Economic Activity (EU/EEA) countries have reported 1,812 cases since 2013, and public health authorities in several countries have reported that C. auris has caused severe illness.
Candida auris infections can be serious and even fatal, particularly in individuals with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems. While the mortality rate for C. auris infections varies by location and patient population, some studies have reported mortality rates as high as 30–60%.

Since C. Auris began cropping up, we’ve discovered that it is a multi-drug resistant fungus that can cause serious infections in humans…

“What we don’t know about fungi far, far exceeds what we do,” she says, calling the Candida auris emergence from Japan the canary in the proverbial coal mine.

Spreading around the world, poorly studied and thriving amid climate change, the fungus poses risks that haven’t gotten a lot of study until now. One expert says, ‘We don’t have a really good handle on what is even out there.’

This is a rapidly expanding and serious situation; additional cases of invasive infection and colonization may be identified. MSDH continues to work with impacted facilities to provide infection control guidance and support surveillance and contact screening.

NewsDesk The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports continuous investigation of Candida auris (C. auris) invasive infection and colonization in the state after identifying the first cases of locally acquired C. auris in Mississippi in late November 2022. As of a health ale...

Candida auris naturally shrugs off anti-fungal drugs and some strains are resistant to all of the medicines we have. That's why it's considered a superbug.

That said, there are funguses that could prove dangerous to humans, like the relatively recently discovered Candida auris, a yeast that is resistant to many antifungal medicines and can cause serious chronic infections and even death.

Here’s what you need to know about the real life fungus behind the show.

Candida auris ... has been labelled the new “fungal superbug” because of its resistance and the fact that many of the people it infects have just undergone surgery.

A brain-eating pathogen wreaks havoc in a new sci-fi TV show – which is so far-fetched, right? Well, not entirely.
