It's time for a Healthy New Year! I've got some pretty lofty goals this year concerning my health and I'm so excited about it!

I've learned though that one of the most important parts of reaching a goal is accountability, I'm terrible at answering to myself! How about you? Do you really step it up when you are held accountable to someone? Do you respond to motivation and encouragement, I definitely do!

WOW! The end of this year is approaching, fast! Holidays are coming and I don't feel anywhere near ready. I'm just starting to get myself together now that kids are back in school. My schedule is becoming a little more normal and predictable, and I'm itching to slow down and make more time for myself. Is it time to take a hard look at everything going on in your life and wonder how you ever got there? Or do you just feel that you continue to get swept up in life's events and "everything" just keeps happening to you? You barely handle one thing before the next shows up!

In my journey to become a Health Coach I learned this powerful reframe to help process life changes and events. My kids are doing school from home now, okay "This is happening for me". I can't go shopping anytime I feel like it, yes that too is "happening for me"! No vacation this year, that's a hard one but yeah, that is also "happening FOR ME"! In everything that has come my way I remember this as tool to look at my situation and say, "This can be good for me, even if it seems bad at first".

So much of who we are comes from our identity and what we believe about ourselves, but many times we believe we don't have control over our choices and responding to what is happening to us. I've learned this isn't true, and all the counselors out there said Amen! We can take whatever comes our way, whether it is in our career, relationships, family or finances and use it for our own growth and development, for our good!

The Nourishment Series: Part 2
Care for Your Emotional State of Being

Oftentimes when explaining what I do as a health coach to someone, I half-jokingly refer to it as "health therapy". The reason being is, our emotional state is so closely entwined with how we behave or react, what our habits are, and the choices we make concerning what we are craving in a very...emotional moment.

It's true that many of us are controlled by the strong emotional reactions to certain situations big or small, for example world tragedies, a loss of a loved one or pet, a frustrating job or relationship, overwhelm or stress.

Any of these can put us on a tailspin leading into numbing ourselves out with comfort food and then ending up with more feelings of self judgement or regret. Well, that's not fun, who wants that and why do we do this to ourselves? It's crazy!

So, this is the nourishment series and I'm talking about emotions, lets get into how that looks in your everyday life.
First of all, our emotions are really signals showing us what we are truly experiencing in a moment. They don't lie! They may also be showing what needs some attention right now. Feeling sensitive? Maybe your confidence needs encouraging by being with good friends. Feeling angry or frustrated? Try checking in with yourself to see if your expectations are off or if you could benefit from a new perspective. This is almost always true for me!

If we can learn to recognize what our emotions are really telling us, and we can create a safe place for them to be fully felt for a moment of time we can much more easily move on from them. It then becomes natural to want to be proactive in taking actions to achieve balance, peace, and joy. Now that sounds much better!

Here's a few tips on how to practice getting a handle on those uncomfortable feelings.
Frist, be open to being gracious with yourself. Imagine what you would say to a friend in the same situation. Offer yourself compassion and lovingkindness, that is accepting of what is happening inside yourself.

Second, shift your focus to the good in your life and elicit as many positive emotions as you can-list them! What are you grateful for? What brings you joy and delight? What activities could put you into a happy and peaceful state of mind? Getting active outside and listening to uplifting music does it for me! Find what works for you!

When we are able to make the better choices to nourish our emotional health we are saying "I do have control over myself" and I don't have to turn to comfort eating to feel better, and guess what-that makes you feel EVEN BETTER! That's an upward spiral, a Win Win place to be!

Exciting news everyone! Today I am introducing the Nourishment Series which I will post on every Friday. I have been spending A LOT of time reading up on mindfulness, awareness, and nourishing your body in every single way possible and would love to share with you all.

When talking about nourishment and taking care of our whole selves I believe its best, even crucial to begin with our physical body. Yes there are several other aspects in our lives that do need special attention, but to build upon a strong foundation our physical health takes precedence. The reason being that if we do not feel physically well (always tired, lack of energy, headaches, foggy brain, indigestion, feeling bloated, etc.) we cannot give our full attention to the other factors in our health and lifestyle. We literally need a solid foundation to stand on!

Physical nourishment comes in two parts, the inward-what we consume and outward-movement and exercise we enjoy.

What we consume directly affects our mood, energy levels, and whether or not our body is receiving what it needs to repair itself, keep us strong, and keep our mind alert and focused. I absolutely believe you are what you eat!

I lived a number of years feeling like I was being dragged through my day, with no motivation, not being able to focus or even form a complete sentence (mom brain). I did not realize the effect my diet full of sugar was doing to my body and overall health.

It was only when I cleaned up my diet and began to regularly exercise in way I was challenged yet still enjoyed did I begin to see an improvement in how I felt physically, emotionally, and mentally. It was hard work, but you reap what you sow! I know that what you put into it you absolutely get out of it! It's amazing how even small changes in the right direction can have a major impact! Taking care of my physical health set me up to FEEL GOOD and I was able to give more of my time and energy to the other aspects of nourishment we will cover in future weeks.

Spring comes round every year with hope and renewal and just so much joy after a long winter, especially around these Northern parts!

There was once a time in my life when I was experiencing a "winter season" in my health where I felt down and not myself, couldn't see a way out of my unhealthy habits, and thought it would be this way forever. In my mind all I could think about was how badly I wanted to "bounce back" after having 3 kids.

If only someone would have told me 10 years ago, you cannot bounce back, you can only bounce forward! I had to find a new way of becoming what I wanted, and what I wanted was to feel good in my body. I learned what my body really needed for good nutrition and healthy weight management after much trial and error. And I started taking time to NOURISH every aspect of my life, so that I would not seek out food to make myself feel better because of something else that was out of alignment.

This journey that I have been on almost my entire adult life has led me to this point, to taking steps to becoming a health coach. I'm preparing to launch my business soon and start accepting clients at a discounted rate for the first year! I'll be continuing to post about different aspects of coaching and tips and tricks I've learned.

You know you've found your calling when you tear up writing a post over it! It's been a long time coming and I am so THRILLED to begin working with anyone who can relate to my story of finding your best health, and needs some direction, support, and accountability!
