Because of you, we did it!

With deep gratitude, we are thrilled to share that 122 generous donors helped Holding Space raise $20,350 during Big Day of Giving! Your support reminds us that healing is not a solo journey but is made possible through community, through love, and through each of you showing up with open hearts and hands.

At the heart of this moment is the spirit of Ubuntu, “I am because we are.” Your generosity is a powerful reflection of this truth. It is through our interconnectedness that we thrive, and through our shared commitment that healing becomes possible.

These funds will help us continue advancing our mission to improve the wellbeing of Black people by offering services that are holistic, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and strength-based. Whether it's a healing circle, a soul-nourishing retreat, or a sacred space to simply exhale and be, your contribution ensures that we can continue to do this vital work with care and integrity.

At Holding Space, we often speak about the power of the community. And this Big Day of Giving affirmed what we already know to be true: our community is alive, committed, and rising.

Thank you for being part of this movement. Thank you for holding space with us.

We are so, so grateful.

The Holding Space experience can be hard to put into words—it’s sacred, heart-centered work that nourishes the mind, body, and spirit. But through visuals and the voices of those who’ve joined us, we get a glimpse of its impact. Here’s what one recent attendee shared when asked what she gained from the retreat:
“A safe space to rest and heal, tools to practice somatic meditation, and reaffirm my appreciation of African dance as a healing modality. As soon as I walked into the retreat, I immediately felt safe and valued. The facilitators did an excellent job of holding space for every emotion from joy to grief to vulnerability. The somatic practices made me feel at home in my body and connected to my innate worth. The ending chant of the African dance portion made me feel like I had the strength and love of a my African community and ancestors - ready to take on
the outside world again.”

In her book, “all about love,” bell hooks said, "A love ethic presupposes that everyone has the right to be free, to live fully and well." At Holding Space, our work is rooted in love and compassion, as we dream a world where healing is not a privilege--it is a collective responsibility. Our ancestors healed in community, through song, movement, storytelling, and shared wisdom, and we offer these same healing practices to people of African descent in the Sacramento community today.
As Early Giving has started for the Big Day of Giving, we invite you to support our work to keep sharing our love offerings to help improve Black mental health here in the area. Any funds raised between now and May 1 will allow us to continuously offer spaces of healing and refuge for our people.

In honor of Mental Health Month, and in the name of healing for the Black community, we are excited to announce our first 6-week Introduction to Mindfulness series, starting this Thursday, May 16. This series will be offered by our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Shacunda Rodgers, who has been a mindfulness practitioner for the last 18 years.

We will cover the foundational principles of mindfulness & meditation, practice within the safety of community, and learn how these strategies can help manage stress, ease overwhelm, strengthen resilience, and most importantly, support your healing journey.

This Intro to Mindfulness course for the Black community has been a dream for many years, and it is such a joy to see it come to fruition! If you're interested in learning more, feel free to connect with us here:

Big Day of Giving is just two days away!

Since last May, we used Big Day of Giving funding to host 5 community healing events that served over 250 members of the Black community in Sacramento. We want to share some quotes from participants about the impact that these healing events have had, all thanks to donors like you!

"I gained joy in movement. I love this community. I always leave better than I came. The Holding Space Team shows us so much care, even down to the food they serve us. This space is a healing space for us to just be black without apology and in our full self.

“I left the retreat feeling free, light, feeling valued, seen and comfortable, confident in my own skin and how I move. I feel proud…and I feel peace and joy…Thank you for creating this opportunity and space to just be!”

"The program allowed each participant to share the deepest and suppressed feelings in an environment that was loving and understanding—one must experience the significance of this gathering to realize the power it holds to help our community heal the wounds of years of suppressed pain."

“I gained my power and belief in myself back.”

“I feel like it was an awakening in my soul. I was empowered to own my super power of love and kindness again.”

This healing is only possible because of you.

Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 to go toward our community healing offerings, and to expand our capacity to provide 1:1 mental health support. These are both big goals, but our desire is to provide culturally competent care for Black people, and it will take resources to meet these needs. We're gonna do all we can to show up for our people, and would be grateful for your support along the way.

At Holding Space, we want to make healing accessible for all Black people in Sacramento. That's the only way healing is possible--together.

And you can help.

Our goal is to expand our work in order to reach more communities and touch more lives in the process. We hope you'll join us in our commitment to doing the work of healing generational trauma.
