Terpenes 101 | What is a Terpene p1/2
We’ve all heard the expression “the Nose knows” but what exactly does this mean?
It means that you have a natural, biological olfactory system that connects your sense of smell with your brain to activate the neurological network of information on how to interpret those smells. Here’s the impressive part: when it comes to nature (fruits, plants, vegetables), the compounds your nose is smelling are called TERPENES.
Medical News Daily defines “terpenes” as ‘highly aromatic compounds that determine the smell of many plants and herbs… Terpenes are the natural form of these compounds when they are in the live plant… Some terpenes play a protective role in the plant, helping the plant to recover from damage; others act as a part of the plant’s immune system to keep away infectious germs. Many terpenes are bioactive [in humans], which means they may affect the body. This effect will vary based on the concentration of the terpene itself and how a person uses it.’
Aromatherapy? yes thanks to terpenes. Citronella to deter bugs? That’s terpenes. Fresher breath from mint in your mouth? Yup, terpenes!
In fact, “science has identified more than 20,000 unique terpenes in the world”.
And, it's a lesser known fact that MANY of these beneficial terpenes are found in high-quantities in cannabis and h**p. Cultivars are just being understood and studied and it is believed that there are anywhere between 4 to as many as 100 or more terpenes in their phytochemical makeup! It’s this 1-stop-shop epiphany that many health practitioners celebrate when they realize that 1 plant can have so many beneficial health effects for their clients and patients.
How are YOU incorporating terpenes in your everyday life? We’d love to hear from you!
🍋 Adding lemon (aka Limonene) to your water to help manage stress
💜Applying lavender (aka Linalool) to your temples to relax
🌱Hanging dried eucalyptus plants (aka Eucalyptol) in a hot shower to surround yourself with the calming scent of the eucalyptus
