Here is a harsh reality.

Many of us in healthcare find that the only form of self-preservation in our minds is to care only about ourselves.

Self-preservation at this low level will leave you an island. But the worst part is that you will continue to keep your misery and negativity and fatigue with you on that island.

And the fact of the matter is this: there is no room for this in healthcare.

Do as I say, not as I do 😂

But seriously, part of sincerity of your development is to check in with yourself quietly and assessing your position and your progress.

Far too many times we verbalize out loud to others the virtues we are looking to convey, and this sometimes leads to a false sense of progress. Who are we trying to convince? Is it someone else? Is it our own selves?

Bad news!

Being in healthcare is a form of customer service.

The good news is that once we understand this, we can navigate it using the tools that work for customer service.

Many times, we are demanded things from our patients as well as from our colleagues, consultants, and administrators that just seems ridiculous or unfair. But 9 times out of 10, our outrage didn’t solve the issue.

So, in the lens of customer service, perhaps the less resistant path is to figure out how to reach that end goal that serves you as well as the one seeking your service.

Who hates doing dishes?

Let’s try an experiment.

The next time you have to do the dishes, talk about how much you hate doing the dishes while doing them. Notice whether the dishes get done or not.

You’ll probably see that they got clean.

Why? Because at the end of the say, action is what matters. Your perspective makes the action more doable or not.

What is really happening when you feel like you have no more left in you?

Well, based on science, the thing that is happening is that you decided that this was the point at which you stopped taking action.

You can also decide the opposite.

This episode’s 3 insights:

1. The idea that our will power is a finite pool to pull from is false

2. Think of a situation in which you would feel depleted and think about what you would do if you weren’t depleted in that moment.

3. When you do feel depleted, task yourself with one more step, and see what happens

The key to any forward movement is understanding one simple thing:

Action leads to the movement. The feeling, the motivation, the fear, none of that is what stops you. What stops you is not doing.

If you give yourself room to take less action, or no action, you will not move forward and you will lose self-credibility

Don’t negotiate with yourself.

The idea that you have nothing left in you at the end of the day has been proven FALSE

The difference between those who feel depleted at the end of the day and those who did not is one thing:

The ones who felt depleted believed it was a real thing to begin with.

The narrative you tell yourself from the start will determine your end point.

The idea of ego depletion is widely known in performance psychology.

And it’s been debunked.

The study looked at two groups: one experienced ego depletion, the other did not.

The common denominator among those who felt ego depletion was that they believed going in that ego depletion was a thing.

Nature vs. Nurture, the age-old debate.

Which part of you is fixed and which part of you is changeable? We may never know.

But the more important question is this: What really matters? Whether you can change 90% of yourself of 1%, that portion is 100% in your control.

The kicker is this that none of us knows how much of an impact that portion will even have, so what does the percentage even matter?

If the idea of running out of steam is not a real thing, then what causes some people to run out?

What makes some people need to unwind while not for others?

The answer is the decision to tap out.

The moment you decide you have no more in you is the moment you tap out. The ones who didn’t tap out never believed in the idea of feeling depleted in the first place.

Everything always has some resistance.

Even me recording these podcasts is resistance. The reason I have trouble being consistent is that resistance, the lack of motivation.

But for this episode, I noticed that feeling, and said to myself out loud that this feeling means it’s time to do it.

So, I did it.

And it’s done.

Ego in the psychoanalytical sense is the part of you in relation to how you interact with the external environment.

Ego depletion is when you run out of that ability to interact externally with that ego.

It’s when you “run out of steam”

Ego depletion has been a widely established belief in performance psychology.

And it has been disproven.

Ego depletion is the idea that you can run out of steam mentally. It’s the thing that makes you think you need to unwind after work.

We talk about how this has been proven to be false, but the point is that since it only existed in the study for those who believed it existed in the first place, you get to decide the narrative.

So whenever a situation is anticipated to go a certain way, it will go that way probably because you already decided.

Action matters over feeling.

Whether you feel motivated or not, whether you feel like you have any more left in you, you get to decide if that stops you with taking another step

Whether ego depletion exists or not, if in that moment you decide to do one more thing that moves you toward the end goal, a change will occur.

Action matters over feeling.

What is the difference between grievance and possibility?

A grievance is a fixation on what has occurred. It’s past tense.

Possibility is a build off grievance in that it looks at the grievance and dissects it into what can be done to change it or improve it.

Fixating on a grievance until it gets solved is what builds up resentment, which leads to isolation, which leads to self-preservation. Fixating requires pointing outwards.
