What’s the difference between relaxation and meditation?

In short:

- Relaxation is the state of being free from physical and mental tension.

- Meditation is a mind training aimed at developing concentration and the ability to see reality with clarity.

Furthermore, is Being Mindful and Relaxed the Same Thing?

The short answer is “no”.

Simply put, being mindful is being aware, and being relaxed is to be free of tension.

Being mindful is to become aware of how you are feeling physically, emotionally, mentally, and increasing awareness of your environment. Being mindful is tuning in to how you are experiencing the present moment and reserving judgment. That might mean becoming aware that you are pretty chilled out, or the exact opposite.

Why do we get confused?

Many of us think of watching a movie, sitting down drinking a glass of wine, reading a good book, or simply vegging out as relaxing. Although true relaxation is something that is practiced and cultivated; it is defined by the stimulation of the relaxation response and many meditators find that their practice benefits from using a relaxation technique to access an inner stillness helpful for meditating.

On the other hand, while relaxation is a secondary effect of some meditation, other forms of meditation are anything but relaxing. Ultimately, it all comes down to the intention and purpose of the technique.

Within the practice of Shamata Bhavna (which aims at training concentration and cultivating tranquillity), Mindfulness along with Introspection, is a “cognitive process”, that acts as the remedy to overcome the two errors of meditation, which we encounter during our practice, namely:

- Mental Excitement (mind wondering - rumination/anticipation)

- Mental Laxity (boredom, drowsiness, somnolence)

Introspection - is the ability of the mind to observe and monitor itself, being vigilant of it's own whereabouts.

Mindfulness - is the ability to remember to bring back our awareness and attention to the object of meditation, usually the breath and to sustain that focused attention for a prolonged period of time.

However, Mindfulness can be integrated into our daily lives.
We can incorporate Mindfulness into our daily activities, in which case it becomes a practice in itself.
Mindfully attending a specific task can improve the quality of it's ex*****on and make the activity more enjoyable.

Being mindful means “curiously and openly observing our moment-to-moment experience without judgment or trying to avoid or cling to it.”

In which daily activity will you incorporate Mindfulness?
