Good afternoon fam! Another post about changing your eating habits to balance out inactivity during seasonal changes...we've spoken about deciding to make the change, the last post contained ways to make the transition easier and keeping your sanity during the process. This post, the third of four, will focus on supplementation.
The first thing to keep in mind is that supplements are just that, supplements. They are designed to fill gaps in your nutrition. There are things you can't get from whole foods that are readily available in supplements.
Second, supplement quality is the second key factor. There's a BIG difference in supplementation you buy from a convenient store or big box store (no names) versus a good reputable company (there are ways to differentiate which I will discuss later).
Lastly, your nutritional habits shouldn't exceed 3, maybe 4 supplements included in your diet. My supplements include, most importantly, a multivitamin. Again, check the quality of the supplements you take. My choice is Isotonix Daily Essentials (pic included). Whatever your brand of choice, it's important to include. Next, is a good protein/meal replacement. Again, keep in mind that this is a supplement to your normal meals. My advice, don't exceed two per day. There are various formulas that fit every diet- low carb, high carb, even vegan. Need suggestions, I have plenty! Workout enthusiasts should definitely add creatine to your diet. Many benefits have been noted from increased muscle size (temporary due to the effects of creatine introduction and usage) to some studies of increased stamina in athletic events and training. Just follow the directions. And finally, there are various supplements available based on possible deficiencies you may have such as vitamin B Complex, vitamin D and Calcium.
This is advice and not a prescription. Just be sure to follow the directions of all supplementation ingested. Most important, please consult your physician before using any type of supplementation. It may adversely react to medications you may currently be taking.
