Hard truth ā¬‡ļø

Trying to get kids to try new foods is one of the hardest things about feeding them!

Kids like what they like and raising adventurous eaters takes mental and physical energy.

Here’s the deal: often times in toddlerhood, we resort to feeding foods we know our kids like. However in doing so, we miss opportunities to maximize their curiosity when they are little.

Here’s what you can do:

1. Switch up snacks and how foods are served often. For favorite foods, try to make small changes to them to add additional variety. For example, try a different brand of cheesy cracker or offer flax seed in your child’s peanut butter sandwich next time it’s offered.
2. It’s important to remember that kids can’t learn to like new things without an opportunity to try them. That means continuing to put foods on their plate you know they might not eat.
3. The more we try to convince our kids that they will in fact like something if they try it, the more they are going to resist trying that food. Remember, in early childhood kids crave a sense of control. Not to mention, let’s say you try and finally convince them to try a food and they don’t like it? You will lose trust and decrease the likelihood they will believe they will in fact like a food they try in the future.

šŸ“If your little one has an egg allergy, you’re trying to make a recipe vegan, or you’ve run out of eggs, you can utilize these handy options!

🄚Keep an open mind: not every recipe can use an egg substitute and come out perfectly. Egg is used as a way to bind foods together, add some fat, liquid and also aid in other chemical reactions needed to help baking occur properly.⁣ Because of this, when you sub with something else the texture and consistency of your final product may change.

Here are some substitutions for 1 egg in a recipe:⁣

🄚=1/4 cup mashed bananas: Used in brownies, muffins, cakes, and pancakes (you can also try applesauce, sweet potato or pureed pumpkin)⁣

🄚=1/4 cup applesauce: Used in brownies, muffins, cakes, and pancakes (you can also try applesauce, sweet potato or pureed pumpkin)⁣

🄚=1 tablespoon chia seeds + 3 tablespoons water: Let this gel for 5 minutes. This works well in muffins, cookies, cakes and more⁣

🄚=1 tablespoon ground flax seeds + 3 tablespoons water: Let this gel for ~5-10 minutes. This adds a slightly nutty flavor to foods. I use it in fritters, meatballs, muffins, pancakes etc⁣

🄚=3 tablespoons nut butter: This is SO good in brownies and cakes etc.⁣

🄚=1/4 cup of Chickpea juice; It helps to blend this in a blender for a minute or two. You can use it in savory dishes like meatballs/fritters. You can also use it in baked goods too ā¤ļø. ⁣

- you can also use 1/4 cup avocado, or greek yogurt sometimes as well.

Do you have a little snack lover?šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļøā£ā£

It’s been a common struggle with families recently to figure out how to handle snacks!

We recently had a follower talking about how her little one was just ā€œconstantly eating snacks!ā€

Another one said: ā€œMy kids will eat SO well at snack times but not at any other meals.ā€

ā£ā£šŸ‘‰Our recommendation is: you can always use the snacks they love to build variety and make snack time just another eating opportunity.

It’s easy to think that snacks have to look or be a certain way, but they don’t!

Our pediatric feeding team just released a new guide covering everything you need to know about handling snack time and making smart picks to offer your kids.

Comment ā€œLINK PLEASEā€ to download Kids Meals appšŸ“² (New users can trail premium content and all of our recipes for 14 days! Cancel before the trial ends if the app isn’t for you)

✨Top tips that help make snack time easier:

- USE LEFTOVERS. This makes things easier for you and can be another food exposure.
- If snack time is their favorite, use that time to introduce a SMALL portion of new foods.
- Offer one food where all you have to do is slice šŸ’š

Remember: snacks can be ANY food served between larger meals.

Start with small portions then let them have more if needed.

šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø Raise your hand if you’ve heard any of these sentences growing up.

ā˜Although it is important for children to eat, some things we say (with the best of intentions) can actually be counterproductive in the long run šŸ˜ž

While telling them they need to clean their plate before they can play may get them to eat their food at that meal, it probably won’t help them to listen to their body’s needs and create a positive relationship with food and eating.

šŸ’šSo here are some suggestions of more helpful things to say to encourage them to eat without the added pressure:

šŸ”¹Engage them in the meal by asking questions about what it looks, feels and smells like.

šŸ”¹Give them the option to eat what they want from their plate and not eat something if they don’t want to

šŸ”¹Talk about ā€œhealth benefitsā€ in ways they can understand - ā€œthe bread will give you energyā€

šŸ”¹Help them listen to their bodies and understand when they are hungry or full, but try to keep a schedule so that they aren’t asking for food 10 minutes after the meal is over

šŸ”¹Make meals more fun by adding dips, sprinkles or cute food picks

šŸ”¹Eat with them whenever you can, your presence and example are so important!

✨Our main goal is to teach children to be in touch with their bodies’ needs and that meal times be positive and pleasant!

Feeding little ones is often not an easy task an requires patience and persistence šŸ’š

The good news is that we are here for you! Our team of feeding specialists have put together a whole set of peaceful meal guides to make meals easier, along with over 600 dietitan-approved recipes, meal plans and lots more. Comment LINK PLEASE to download it šŸ“²

Real talk..

Some days I hear parenting tips and insert a BIG EYE ROLL…

And other days I eat some humble pie and realize I am skeptical of some things I know will be good for my kids because I don’t have the bandwidth to try them

And you know what? That’s OK! That’s ok that’s ok that’s ok…

Of COURSE not every strategy is going to yield the results we want nor can we use them for every kid. If that was the case, someone would have written an actual helpful parenting handbook, that everyone can use, and all of the worlds problems would be solved šŸ˜…

But without recognizing the actual work that goes into most mealtime strategies we can’t be so quick to throw something out and say ā€œnope doesn’t work for my kid.ā€

While the exact number varies, most studies support parenting strategies must be repeated consistently over time, often at least 10-20 times or more. But consistency across people, environments, your child’s age, and temperament play a huge role in how long a strategy can take to work.

The good news is you get to pick what you do and try with your child because you know them (and your bandwidth) best!

Not sure where to start? Check out our new mealtime strategies guide which lays out the land of a positive mealtime environment and takes you on a customized journey that you get to choose which paths to take. Comment LINK PLEASE to download and review this guide for FREE

šŸ“Save for some lunchbox inspo!

We know how challenging it is to plan meals and lunchboxes every day šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«. That’s why our Kids Meals App team makes monthly meal plans and lunchbox meal plans to help you out šŸ˜‰.

Here are some additional tips that can help make building a lunchbox easier!

1. We always recommend having a favorite food available (potentially even 2-3 other favorites!). This helps your child feel comfortable in their different eating environment.

2. A non-preferred food. This may be an unpopular opinion, but we do recommend serving a small portion of a non-preferred food in the lunchbox! Anticipate that it may come home uneaten. BUT we know that the influence of peers on eating habits is HUGE and this can be one way to help a child try a non-preferred food that they may not try at home!

3. Produce or a favorite fruit/veggie. I don’t know about you but I like to offer things that you just have to chop quickly without needing to cook them.

4. An entree! This can also be a favorite! We recommend trying to see if it can have some protein or fat to help your little one stay full and give them energy through the day.

✨Bonus tip: Make double batches and utilize leftovers, this will make lunchbox packaging a lot easier!!
