new year spread 🔮

now that exams and the holidays are over I get to start practicing new spreads for the new year!

This one is by: www.newagehipster.co

At a glance, this spread is shouting for motion. The entire wand family is occupying the higher spots, asking for precedence. The knight cautions us to not get carried away by our action. Sometimes being too focused on a single point can be a detriment, and occasionally we need to humble ourselves and slow down. The King is the structure that keeps the boisterous Knight in check, reminding us that order exists for a reason. The Queen comes in with her earth energy to round out the haste of the Knight and the rigidity of the King. She brings the joy in our forward motion, reminding us to look around once in a while and appreciate the fruits of our tireless labour.

In the last year, the cards remind me of the learning we’ve done. My higher teachings this year have been to let go, and re-prioritize. I have been blessed with a Knight of pentacles attitude in both myself, and my husband. This year we have depended on each other for a steady kind of love and care. This year, I’ve been able to see what a marriage is about, and it’s been exquisitely beautiful work. Seeing a spark of the growth that can happen when we work together has given me so much confidence for years to come.

Judgment came through as the theme for this new year for me. My favourite card, because I’ve grown to love illuminating dark corners. The death of a loved one this year has made me rejoice in opening doors, fearlessly facing what’s inside. Forgiving others doesn’t mean ignoring what they’ve done with placidity. Forgiveness is an active process by which two people must be fully engaged in to work. Otherwise, keep yourself safe. Life is too short.

The Ace of Swords and the eight of Swords here are a seemingly incompatible duo, until we consider them closer. The ace, or magician, of the sword suit is big and expansive. It’s cutting away the tunnel of your mind so you can see the stars, but how does one achieve that when one is feeling trapped in a negative loop of the mind? Well, we can stop making assumptions for once. The eight of swords is a challenge for me, seeing the swords pointing at each other looks like a cage to me, but the ace of swords provides a stunning key. Question your truths, question your narratives, and watch your mind expand. The grooves become deep in our brain matter, the patterns between neurons strengthen over our lives, and we become so used to familiarity in our pattern of thinking. A good mental exercise is to go over that pattern every now and then, to ask bigger questions, the before and after, to consider it from a different angle. Clarity.

Taken together, this new year spread is challenging, uplifting, and I’m very excited to see what 2020 will bring to me and my loved ones 🖤

clarity for a client ✨

A lovely angel asked a love question recently, and received a resounding yes from my pendulum. To further clarify this client’s big question, I used the pendulum to select a card from my familiar’s deck.

The Hermit is a card of introspection. In the context of the question, it serves to remind us that we can be the passenger to the universe sometimes. The moon and the reflective imagery on the card asks us to seek answers internally.

In this question, it was in regards to a romance getting off the ground. We’ve all had that burst of intuition when we first meet someone truly special. Often we dismiss these things as butterflies or puppy love, but the Hermit wants us to listen to our bodies. The answer as to whether or not someone truly cares enough about you to want to take those next steps with you is something you already know. Quiet yourself for a moment, let go of all the other noise, and listen.

catto helping me do my reading 🐱

I love the death card. I know, I know, spOOOOOOky because coffin.

Death is transformative. Death has been one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had. Death has been cleansing and healing and hopeful. When you’re experiencing grief, it’s hard to look at the larger picture. Think back to moments you’ve dealt with the death of a loved one or someone close to you or even a stranger’s death that touched you deeply. When you mourn, you transform. Your relationships transform. Death puts everything into perspective for us, and is a natural and beautiful part of life. Death is an ending, but endings are necessary for a new cycle to begin.

The ten of wands means this ending will be a tired one. Rock bottom is a hard landing, but the only place to go is up from here. Tens are associated with the wheel of fortune in the major arcana, and the wheel encompasses inevitable change, the movement of the wheel so large that it could crush all of us beneath it and keep rolling smoothly. Being small, and insignificant is not a bad thing. The world moving forward is not a bad thing. It might seem like the end of the world, but that’s where our six of pentacles comes in.

Look at the way the coins on the card meet. 3 in one row, 3 in the other. Perfectly balanced, like sixes usually are. Each coin has support from another. After death, after rock bottom, after inevitable endings, the universe always comes in to bring us comfort. For every sacrifice we make, for every hard time we see, there’s relief in the fact that we’re not alone. We’re not alone in this world, harsh as it may be. We’re all connected to one another through our shared experience of humanity, so much so that even a stranger can understand our struggle.

Change may be coming, but if we work as a community, we can find comfort among the carnage.

Judgement ⚖️

The final act of letting go. The last release before the rush of the world coming in.

The Lisa Parker’s Familiars deck does a wonderful job of this one. We all know a fat orange cat, and we all know that judgmental look. The stern eye of time looks upon us and asks us to make a final sacrifice, a final choice. Get to the point, it says, and it won’t take any excuses. This guy was particularly stubborn today, so this coming week the universe asks us to take inventory, and let go of what is holding us back. The promise of the end and the beginning is right around the corner, seeing as we’re in our final weeks of this decade. The world is coming, and we have to prepare.

Ace of Cups | The Hierophant | The Devil

The ace of cups is such a fan favourite in tarot. Brimming with endless possibilities, the cup is emotion, intrigue, joy, and excitement. The ace is a new connection, a new way for us to share with someone. The way I picture it is holding a cup full of all the good things we have to offer, and the ace(the magician) is the little helper that pushes us towards someone else with that full cup. We have a lot to give, all of us, and the ace of cups reminds us of that.

The hierophant appears to be stalking me this week. The rigidity of the hierophant makes me, personally, feel like a rebellious teenager all over again. It calls us to remember why ritual is important, and why we editorialize when we pass knowledge down through generations. You know how when you’re telling someone younger a story about how you went wrong and how you fixed it, and sometimes you leave out a du***ss choice or two in between? The hierophant is alright with that. He’s not too worried about how you got to that answer, he’s more focused on how we can put that answer to use in the grander scheme of our lives.

The devil is my personal favourite. A lot of people find it terrifying, and I especially love the imagery of my Lisa Parker deck. The devil is a warning, that we’re standing on a very tall, precarious place. That something vital and life changing is on the horizon, should we continue making the choices we’re making. Taken with the card of beautiful new connection, and the card of strong leadership, the devil is a caution. Remember to value inner connection over material, surface level relationships. Those who speak to our hearts and emotions will serve us better in the long term than those who offer us earthly advantage. Don’t be swayed by the shiny outside, it may see all you’ve built fall to ruin.

✨night time reading✨

I love my fox tarot imagery on strength here. Today served as a reminder that there are ways in which to show strength that are small, too. Sometimes getting out of bed is an act of strength, sometimes it’s taking a break. Strength doesn’t have to be a major action in order to have major effects on our lives.

The moon is yet another reminder to listen to our intuition...this one a bit louder than yesterday. The moon asks us to be introspective, and see the way it lights up all our corners gently. To be strong is to be able to withstand this internal look around without judging oneself too harshly.

The nine of wands calls us to push a little harder today. The nine here is the final challenge before reaching the goal. That challenge, this spread says, is internal. The challenge will take a quiet strength to move through. But the promise of what the 10 has to offer us in the wand suit is what keeps us going.

Sunday Morning Reading 🔮

The Empress has always been my favourite card. It's followed me around since I had my very first tarot reading at 19. She's been a lovely companionate reminder that our feminine aspects can be all things; a bountiful mother, a sensual woman, and a soft heart. For December 1st, this is a particularly poignant first card. A human card, encouraging us to keep both feet firmly on the ground, but not because she doesn't want us to get carried away. The Empress wants us to appreciate all the pleasure and excitement the material world has to offer. As we start off the holiday month, this card is a reminder to appreciate all the little joys that come to us in December.

The High Priestess is another very feminine card. Ruled by the Moon, the lady of intuition and listening to your gut. The High Priestess wants to show us our deepest musings in a new light, she wants us to pay more attention to our dreams, and she calls for a fearless look at our inner heart. For December 1st, a card that encourages curiosity and exploring acts as a compliment to the Empress. Don't fear asking questions today, even the hard questions will come out with a playful curiosity.

The Hierophant rounds out this major arcana-filled reading (does this not scare anyone else when the cards are SUPER SERIOUS?). I've always been reluctant around this card, the rigidity of this one when compared to the playful exploration of the High Priestess always felt too constricting. However, with time and experience, the Hierophant has become a strong favourite. The imagery of the keys on the card are...well, the key. The Hierophant is an authority, yes, but a loving one. He reminds us that ritual is important, tradition is how we carry on from one generation to the next. On December 1st, the Hierophant comes in, excited to see how you'll take your own traditions and make them your own. The branch that doesn't bend will eventually break, but the branch that seeks the sun by trusting it's own abilities will break through all the others.

Taken together, the message today is clear. We must enjoy ourselves, keep an open mind, and use the structure we have around us to grow taller and create new structure for those that come after. Be curious and fearless, because there are a lot of good things up there.
