As an Occupational Therapist, Ashlea often uses a tool of “helpful thinking” as a way to support clients in building confidence and independence in their everyday lives.
Let’s take a moment to break this down. 👇👇
Helpful thinking is used to gently guide someone to recognise unhelpful thoughts (like “I can’t do this” or “I always get it wrong”) and replacing them with more balanced, realistic ones such as “I can give this a go” or “I’m improving with practice.”
Helpful thinking isn’t about ignoring challenges, it’s about creating a mindset that supports action, learning, and progress.
In practice, this might look like breaking tasks into smaller steps, celebrating small wins, and encouraging clients to focus on what they can do.
Over time, this approach helps build self-belief, resilience, and the confidence to engage more independently in daily activities.
