Free To Be U

According to the Department of Health, by the end of 2021, an estimated total of 133,800 adults and children are living with HIV in the Philippines.

As of December 2021, approximately 94,000 were diagnosed and among them, only about 56,000 are on antiretroviral therapy (ART). The Free to Be U campaign aims to raise awareness and understanding of accessible HIV programs and services. It also intends to destigmatize HIV and encourage a welcoming approach toward its prevention, testing, and treatment, empowering everyone regardless of HIV status to be Free to Be U. This campaign is brought to you by PEPFAR, USAID, and EpiC Philippines in partnership with DOH HealthyPilipinas, Konsultayo, HASH, LoveYourself, PAFPI, RTHSN-Lakan, SHIP, TDIF, and TLFShare.

SUPPORT GROUPS FIND NEW PURPOSE! 🌟

After LAKBAYIN’s successful support session, SANDUGO, a support group in General Trias, Cavite, stepped up and re-engaged 16 people living with HIV who had been lost to treatment follow-up—all in just one month!

On August 16–17, SANDUGO brought together their 16 peers and other clients struggling with medication in a safe space where they could process the impact of their diagnosis, rebuild self-image and confidence, and openly discuss barriers, motivations, and the support they need to continue treatment.

With the support of General Trias Social Hygiene Clinic and Positively Empowered People of Antipolo (PEPA), this peer-led re-engagement strategy continues to empower support groups to bring their peers back into care and break down barriers to treatment interruption.

MORE PEERS ARE BACK ON TRACK! ✨

In just one month, LAKBAYIN, a support group in Bacoor, Cavite, has successfully re-engaged 12 people living with HIV who had been lost to follow-up (LTFU) in treatment.

By adopting the Positively Empowered People of Antipolo (PEPA) re-engagement strategy and teaming up with the Bacoor City Social Hygiene Clinic, LAKBAYIN mobilized 8 Peer Recruiters to map and reconnect with LTFU clients. The 12 recruited peers, along with other peers who are struggling with their medications, then joined a two-day support session on August 9–10, and are now back on treatment with ongoing guidance from their adherence buddies.

With EpiC’s support, LAKBAYIN’s efforts to reconnect and empower more peers will continue until December 2025. Free To Be YOUTH leader Dondy Goopio, the brain behind this strategy, is also working closely with the support groups.
