My husband is not usually allowed in the grocery store! He is not the type to research nutrition, but you can only imagine the countless lectures on nutrition he’s received from me in the 20 years we’ve known each other. After all that, I see he still has trouble making good choices at the store. This reminds me of the difficulty for the average person to navigate the world of nutrition, where misinformation, and conflicting information abounds. Let’s go through these three choices...
1. Bubly is just naturally flavored sparkling water. Not so bad, right? Watch out for this version, which has 35mg of caffeine in each can! Not exactly what my ten year old, who loves sparkling water, needs!
2. Anything labeled “sugar free”, “ low calorie”, or “diet”, is usually loaded with artificial sweeteners! How’s does my hubby not know that by now😱?! This lemonade contains aspartame, a neurotoxic sweetener! That stuff is not allowed in our house, and I recommend you keep it out of yours.
3. Notice how this Kraft dressing boasts claims of healthiness, with no artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, or synthetic colors. Then read the ingredients and notice the “ blend of oils”, which are soy and canola. Both of these oils are very unhealthy, and in a non-organic dressing will also likely be genetically modified. At Fernwood, we do not recommend any bottled salad dressings, as they are almost all made from unhealthy oils, such as soy and canola. We recommend avoiding these oils and making your own dressings from extra virgin olive oil. Oh, and what the heck is calcium disodium EDTA? It’s a chemical food preservative. Yet another reason to make your own dressing! Read your food labels carefully! Be a conscious consumer, eat well, and be well❤️🌿
