Want to start growing herbs, but not an experienced gardener? Me too! Growing most herbs is pretty easy, but I’m busy and not a very knowledgeable gardener, so went with these “Garden in a Pouch” herbs that I found at Tractor Supply. Super easy, great to do with kids, and a perfect option if you’re busy and not an experienced grower! Grow something and be well!🌿❤️

Can you tell by looking which butter is healthier? It’s not just the lighting, the butter in the top is a deeper yellow, and is made from the cream of grass fed cows. The lighter yellow butter is made from conventionally raised grain fed cows. The grass fed butter is a darker yellow because of its higher nutrient content, particularly vitamin A. Grass fed butter also has a far healthier fatty acid content, meaning it is more anti inflammatory, and not harmful to heart health like conventional butter. Be informed, make good food choices, and be well🌿

Can you feel the energy of spring? According to Taoist philosophy, the energy changes of the seasons also manifest in our bodies and emotions, since we are a part of nature. According to Chinese Medicine, spring is a time of growth, creativity, upward movement, birth, renewal, and new beginnings. This is a good time to engage in creative activities, work in pushing past self imposed boundaries, and to be open to, and seek personal development. This is also a good time to engage in physical detoxification to help our bodies start anew. It’s a good time of year to commit to shifting our diets to fresh local foods, engage in more physical exercise and to decrease our use of caffeine and stimulants. We encourage you get outside, to align yourself with the energy of the season and be well!🌿🐣☀️

Ahhh, another Monday morning. Every morning before I start seeing patients I read the oath of Naturopathic and Chinese Medicine to myself. It’s a wonderful way to ground myself. I’m so grateful to be able to practice the beautiful art and science of these systems of medicine. I’m so grateful for the way they have transformed myself, and how they help me to be a part of transforming and healing patients. The artwork is by a fellow ND, Hillary Costello❤️🌿

This beautiful lady is 93 (and a half) years old! This is my grandmother, Violet. She lives in Ontario, Canada, and you see her here going out for her daily walk. During the pandemic she had to stop going to her usual water aerobics classes, bowling, and darting leagues. To keep up her spirits and her health, she has gone for a walk everyday, unless blizzarding, or icy. I think you’ll agree she’s amazing, and truly an inspiration! Happy international women’s day! I hope today you have thought about, and appreciated an inspirational woman in your life❤️🌿

Are you aware of mercury levels in fish? Many people have decreased their meat intake and increased fish intake for better health. Mercury is one the most toxic substances on earth, so it’s important to be aware of which fish contain high mercury levels, and limit their intake. Note that for an adult it’s safe to consume only 1 can of Albacore tuna every 9 days! Chunk light tuna contains much less mercury. Check out the ndrc.org guide, be informed, and be well!🐟 🌿

Exposure to air pollution increases the risk of heart attacks, as is shown in this study from 2016. February is heart health month and articles about nutrition , exercise, and stress management abound. These are all so very important, but most of us don’t think about how air pollution affects our cardiovascular risk. This study shows a 14% increase in risk of heart attack with just a 1 microgram per meter increase in exposure to air pollution. The important question is, what can be done about this? Here are a few tips reduce your exposure to air pollution... 1. Use a high quality air filter in your home. We like Air Doctor or Avari which filter particles much smaller than HEPA filters. We have these filters in our office, and have no financial ties with either company! 2. If you walk, jog, or bike outside try to stick with lower traffic roadways, or go to trails that are surrounded by trees, which naturally filter air. 3. Keep plants in your home. Plants are natural air filters. Plants that are good air filters include spider plants, peace lily, aloe vera, ferns, golden pothos.
4. Choose non toxic cleaning products for your home. 5. A diet high in antioxidants and nutrients will help your body neutralize pollutants you come in contact with. Include 7 or more serving of vegetables per day and 1-2 servings of fruit. Choose a variety of colors for a variety of nutrients and antioxidants. Choose organic whenever possible! ❤️🌿

My husband is not usually allowed in the grocery store! He is not the type to research nutrition, but you can only imagine the countless lectures on nutrition he’s received from me in the 20 years we’ve known each other. After all that, I see he still has trouble making good choices at the store. This reminds me of the difficulty for the average person to navigate the world of nutrition, where misinformation, and conflicting information abounds. Let’s go through these three choices...
1. Bubly is just naturally flavored sparkling water. Not so bad, right? Watch out for this version, which has 35mg of caffeine in each can! Not exactly what my ten year old, who loves sparkling water, needs!
2. Anything labeled “sugar free”, “ low calorie”, or “diet”, is usually loaded with artificial sweeteners! How’s does my hubby not know that by now😱?! This lemonade contains aspartame, a neurotoxic sweetener! That stuff is not allowed in our house, and I recommend you keep it out of yours.
3. Notice how this Kraft dressing boasts claims of healthiness, with no artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, or synthetic colors. Then read the ingredients and notice the “ blend of oils”, which are soy and canola. Both of these oils are very unhealthy, and in a non-organic dressing will also likely be genetically modified. At Fernwood, we do not recommend any bottled salad dressings, as they are almost all made from unhealthy oils, such as soy and canola. We recommend avoiding these oils and making your own dressings from extra virgin olive oil. Oh, and what the heck is calcium disodium EDTA? It’s a chemical food preservative. Yet another reason to make your own dressing! Read your food labels carefully! Be a conscious consumer, eat well, and be well❤️🌿

"Whole foods heal. Why do whole foods heal? When you eat whole, organic foods it's like breast feeding from mama earth herself. It reprograms the cells in your body and then your body knows what to do with that. Making people become the people that they always were. The body is self-renewing. Every cell is replaced every 7 years. Organic foods grown on health soil supports healthy cell replacement." - Dr. Christiane Northrup

Ever wondered what exactly is Neuro-Acupuncture and what it does? We’ve got your answer!

“Neuro-Acupuncture is an acupuncture technique which integrates classical Chinese needling with neuroscience. It is also referred to as scalp acupuncture because specific areas of the scalp are needled to stimulate the underlying brain cells.
Neuro-Acupuncture is extremely safe and effective. It requires very few needles and effects are often seen immediately. Most commonly used for post-stroke recovery, Neuro-Acupuncture in fact treats many other neurological problems: Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, phantom pain, PTSD, Autism, anxiety, and pain.”
