It's already halfway in June 🤯

The past couple of months have been even crazier - April and May are always rough for teachers for many reasons, and at the same time finishing up the graduate program I started last summer took a toll on my body! But I am happy to report that everything is done with positive outcomes ✨️

It has been a long school year, and I'm relieved it has come to an end.
There were days that I was so tired and overwhelmed (and dealing with brain fog, anxiety, and lack of sleep, thanks to my body transitioning) that I wasn't sure if I could make it to my own yoga classes.

But, this is what happens every time without exception - I get energized and feel positive as soon as I walk into the room. Then you come in and practice yoga together. After class, I feel even better and recharged.

Thank you to everyone who has shown up and shared a part of your day with me 🙏

I plan to have the regular classes during the summer break, except for a couple of weeks in August. I will make sure to communicate with you when it gets closer.

And as always, let's not forget to have fun. I work really hard to make my classes welcoming and enjoyable for everyone who is curious about yoga and wants to improve their well-being with yoga.

Welcome April 🌸🌸🌸

In the past few months, my mind has always been on completing a graduate program that I started last fall. The weight of work I need to get done put me in a place where I felt like I couldn't do anything fun, which made me feel very rigid and stuck, physically and mentally!

The idea for this month's focus, flow, comes from my recent effort to alleviate this feeling. One day, I was practicing yoga at home with nothing particular to follow. I was flowing from one asana to another, which gave me a sense of freedom and play. Needless to say, this helped me get out of a slump, and now I'm feeling positive about crossing the finish line. I say let's not forget to have fun in yoga all the time. I do try to make classes welcoming, enjoyable, and playful. That is the spirit I was missing in my daily life 🙈

Welcome February..

Around this time every year, when spring is nearing but it is still dark and cold outside, I often find myself feeling stagnant and impatient. My instinct is to do something different or exciting to distract these feelings, but I also see that it can be a good time to practice rooting.

Rooting is the work that is invisible and quiet which requires patience. That is what a lot of plants do when it's cold, so that they can bloom, blossom, and fruit when the time is right.

In yoga rooting refers to the practice to be grounded through the parts of the body that are contacting the mat. In each pose you'll focus on engaging parts of your body with the ground while extending the other parts upward, therefore we can improve stability, focus, balance, and strength. The grand example of this practice is the tree pose (Vrksasana), which is the highlight of this month's practice.

We all bring our own reasons to want to be more flexible or stronger when we walk into a yoga class. Whatever the reason is, in order to work on these qualities, there's no prerequisites - you do not have to be flexible or already good at yoga. You can and should be able to start where you are and go from there.

And most importantly, let's not forget to have fun. I work really hard to make my classes welcoming and enjoyable for everyone who is curious about yoga and wants to improve their well-being.

2025 here we come.

It's also the year of the Snake 🐍 which is said to represent rebirth, renewal, and change.

To honor Lunar (Chinese) New Year coming up at the end of the month, we are practicing Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana - to me feels it like a full moon since we extend all of our limbs and open the heart) along with poses and flows that prepare us for it. It's challenging but fun!

January is when many of us try to start something new, including yoga. It's exciting to meet with people in class who are trying yoga for the first time. As a school teacher, the energy that comes from a fresh start and a little bit of anxiety reminds me of fall when we start school. The feeling people might be experiencing in the studio also reminds me of when I first started yoga 20 years ago 🧘🏻‍♀️

Here are some of the important reminders that I learned after two decades into this journey and have shaped my teaching;
- There is no "good" or "bad" at yoga
- Yoga is not only for fit and flexible people
- Yoga can be practiced at any age
- Yoga is not a performance or competition
- Yoga can teach us self compassion and kindness when practiced mindfully
- How we breathe affects all aspects in our body, and yogic breathing can bring positive impacts on our physical and mental health
- Yoga is not only for flexibility but also for strength, mobility, balance, and etc
- Mind-body connection that you build from yoga can enhance our mental well being

We are in the final month of 2024...phew.

This year for me was a year of action, and I'm humbled for all the opportunities that were given to me. I also wonder how much I actually savored these experiences at each moment. Action sometimes means being busy and stressed. I must admit that my mind was too focused on getting stuff done from time to time.

This makes time for yoga extra meaningful. Having time to pause and reflect is precious. And being able to do that with you has been a privilege, and I'd like to thank each person who showed up and shared your precious hour in our class this year.

That being said, a theme this month is...open to you. Whatever the reason why you are practicing yoga and wherever you are in your health and spiritual journey, let's honor and celebrate. Namaste.
