Doctors play an integral part in a thyroid patient's health journey. Doctors request blood tests, provide necessary prescriptions for thyroid hormones and to identify and treat hormone balances and nutritional deficiencies.

Unfortunately, many doctors have an "I know best" attitude, and does not listen to patients when patients tell them that they still feel terrible despite their blood tests being normal.

When patients do their own research and suggest alternative approaches and treatment options, some doctors dismiss their patients and tell them to "stop reading stuff on the internet".

Sadly, many doctors are on average 17 YEARS behind the latest research. That means they may not know about the latest research findings and developments in thyroid and Hashimoto's treatments. Unfortunately, many doctors have practices to run and salaries to pay, and they simply don't have time to read up and research.

If your doctor has an ego of "I know best, you know nothing", and you are still feeling horrendous, I recommend you find another doctor who is willing to listen to you and work with you.

Hypothyroid patients often struggle with low iron levels, partly because of lower stomach acid secretion which then impacts the digestion of protein. Research found that switching to a gluten-free diet can help to improve iron levels!

But helpful stress depends on 3 things:
1. The type of stress
2. The dose of the stress

While we cannot always control the type and dosage of stress, we can always build our stress resilience. We can do that by eating healthy food, get quality sleep, exercise, socialise and take care of your spiritual health.

Thyroid hair loss can be extremely frustrating, not to mention emotional and even traumatic. However, there are a few things that you should look at when you want to restore your hair to its full glory:
- Check your thyroid hormones are optimal (both T4 and T3),
- Make sure you eat and digest enough protein,
- Check for nutritional deficiencies, in particular iron, zinc and selenium,
- Manage your stress levels, and
- Checking if your thyroid medication is causing your hair loss.

From a supplement viewpoint, biotin is a well-known supplement for hair growth support, but one you may not have heard to help with hair loss is omega 3!

Did you know that mcg and μg represent the same measurement?

Both stand for micrograms, a unit used to express very small quantities, particularly in nutrition and medicine.

The symbol "mcg" is derived from the Latin "microgramma," while "μg" uses the Greek letter "mu." Whether you see mcg or μg on labels, rest assured they mean exactly the same thing—just different ways to express the same tiny measurement!

Feel free to tweak it if needed!

Iodine is a tricky little thing.

Think of it like Goldilocks: too little iodine, and you don't feel well. Too much iodine? Well, you may trigger thyroid autoimmunity.

Research shows that getting too much iodine can trigger autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In areas where people consume a lot of iodine, there’s a noticeable increase in thyroid autoantibodies.

In some studies, when people who previously had low iodine intake suddenly increased their iodine levels (like through iodized salt), the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies jumped significantly. One study found that 20% of healthy individuals developed signs of thyroid autoimmunity after taking a high dose of iodine.

What to do:
👉 Speak with your doctor before you take iodine-containing supplements.
👉 Eat food that naturally contains iodine, such as shrimp, cod, prunes, and lima beans.
👉 Watch your use of iodized salt.

Are you taking T4 meds (Eltroxin / Euthyrox), your latest TSH blood test is normal, yet you still have hypothyroid symptoms?

You are not alone.

Many doctors treat hypothyroidism by aiming to get your TSH levels and T4 levels within normal ranges. It is considered the "gold standard" for treating hypothyroidism.

The finding from this research were that of those who were taking T4 medication, weighed heavier, had significantly lower physical activity levels, and were more likely to be on antidepressants, statins, or beta-blockers.

Just because your TSH within "normal" range, doesn't mean that you are optimal!

For many years I've been levothyroxine to manage my thyroid hormone levels.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 27 years old.

No doctor tested for Hashimoto's. No one told me how important diet was, and that toxins can have a huge impact on thyroid function.

It was only after I started working with a functional medicine doctor that we introduced T3 hormone supplementation, checked for iron and vitamin D levels, tried low dose natlrexone to help modulate my immune system and focused on a healthier diet that I started to notice dramatic improvements in my health.

It took time, patience and a lot of testing to figure out what the underlying cause of my hypothyroidism is.

But it can be done!

Are you working with a functional medicine doctor?
