holidays came early for me! you all not only met but exceeded my wish on December 11th – within 72 hours of launch! some of you even sought to make sure i was good for January! what i thought might be a mirage became a miracle of magic. a glorious success! extra hugs of appreciation go to Nz, Tray and Almah for pushing me (on the same day and in separate conversations) to ask for community support and vowing to be there if i did (they so were!). i’m deeply thankful.
your kind generosity and buoyant support during such a scary, challenging time not only protected my home but also brought me much needed peace of mind. if it weren’t for you, i quite literally would be packing and researching local storage facilities right now. as it turns out, community was the only viable path i had.
as a Section 8 tenant on Social Security Disability on a tight fixed income, i was gutted, dismayed, and furious about this threat to my security and independence. i knew i was being targeted yet couldn’t prevent it. as recently as last week the landlord tried to demand two additional months rent they are not entitled to have. you all have made their harassments utterly futile and provided insurance against anything else they may scheme in the here and now. the bonus balance will aid me in blocking immediate shenanigans and in seeking a new home when my lease runs out, if that will make the most sense.

trust me to continue to evangelize the power of community for many more years to come. i’m a witness! even during this fundraiser, Collette reminded us that poetry is not a luxury (thx, Audre Lorde!), both Dulce and Rusia reminded that being cared for by the communities we care for is critically important, and Mili reminded that in order to win we must be willing to FIGHT. finally, as Carmen shared, sometimes we just need help. no institutional resources have come through to date despite the best efforts of my advocates and i’m still waiting on an attorney assignment from Essex/Newark Legal Services.
