“All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four-month-old fetus in the womb of her mother.

This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother.

Each of us spent five months in our grandmother's womb, and she in turn formed in the womb of her grandmother.

We vibrate to the rhythm of our mother's blood before she herself is born, and this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother.”

~ Layne Redmond, from “When the Drummers Were Women”

Let's talk about this "due date" thing.

📌 Most "due dates" are calculated based off of Naegel's rule, which adds 280 days to the 1st day of the last menstrual period. This issue with this method is it assumes everyone's cycle is 28 days with ovulation occurring on day 14. Other times due dates are calculated through ultrasound, which can be more accurate, but they do still have a margin of error. (Let's not get into all the other issues with ultrasounds today).

📌 Most babies make their appearance between 37-42 weeks, so your "due date" is more like a due month. It is an estimate.

📌Approximately only 5% of babies will be born on their due date. Only 10% of pregnant people go into labor by 39 weeks, half will go into labor by 40 weeks and 5 days (for 1st time mothers, 40+3 for 2nd time plus) and 90% will go into labor by 42 weeks.

📌 If you are a low risk pregnancy with no complications, it's best to let the process happen on it's own. During those last few weeks your baby's lungs are finishing maturing. Once they are mature enough, a protein found in lung surfactant actives macrophages (immune cells), which will then begin to migrate to the uterus wall. Once there, a chemical reaction takes place, stimulating an inflammatory response in the uterus that begins the process of labor.

📌 Your "due date" is not an expiration date. There is no such thing as an exact due date 👌. Please quit evicting your baby based on an estimation. I can not say this enough. Trust your body. Trust your baby.

Let me tell you all about my friend, the peanut ball. Yes, you read that right {🥜 + 🏈}

Research has shown that women with a labor epidural {using a peanut ball} decreased their first stage of labor by an average of 𝟗𝟎 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐒 and their second stage of labor (aka pushing!) by 𝟐𝟐 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐒!!! And, who wouldn’t want that?! 🤗

And it's not just for mamas who choose to have a labor epidural! Women without a labor epidural {using a peanut ball} decreased their first stage of labor by an average of 𝟏𝟎𝟖 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐒 and second stage of labor by 𝟐𝟗 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐒!!!! Can I get a hallelujah? 🙌🏾❤️

But that's not all!!! Women {using a peanut ball} during labor experienced a 𝟏𝟐 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄 in cesarean sections!!! Sign me up! 🙋🏽

The key to labor progression is *movement of your pelvis*! Your uterus + peanut ball + turning frequently = ✨ 🅜🅐🅖🅘🅒 ✨

New moms perform surgery, occupy executive positions & fly to space. We've got it goin on!

Yet so many mamas also know that fog-like feeling: "mom brain." Where we can't remember the most mundane, everyday tasks—like where we put our keys—especially in that 1st year after baby.

So is "mom brain" actually a thing? We all know it is. And according to new research, the answer is also YES.

It might actually benefit both you & baby. Here's why:

During pregnancy & PP, gray matter in your brain shrinks so you can recognize important signals faster, a process called "pruning." Pruning allows you to connect directly to baby so you can react immediately to her needs. It's your body's way of creating that intuitive 5th-mama-sense ❤️

It's also the result of a major level of hormones surging through your body, so it's no wonder a "mom brain" is also often exhausted.

While your "mom brain" is more focused on caring for baby than remembering your keys, it doesn't mean you're any less intelligent or that your bigger-picture memory has taken a hit. Your cognition is still 100%!

You won't be stuck with "mom brain" forever. It's part of the process & really can be a source of heightened awareness.

"Mom brain" isn't something to 'treat,' but there are a few ways to support & nourish your brain health & focus:

* Stay hydrated
* Continue your prenatal vitamin
* Get enough essential fatty acids in your diet
* Add brain-supporting adaptogens & herbs for focus in your daily routine, which may help ease cognitive tension, sharpen thinking & support focus

🌿 Bacopa
🌿 Ashwaghanda
🌿 Rhodiola
🌿 Lion's Mane

Add 1 tsp of tincture of just one to your tea or latte of choice in the morning. You can rotate your selection to find what's best for you. In this dose, you can feel comfortable using while breastfeeding; these are not for use in pregnancy. Learn more about adaptogens in the free download on my website!

Above ALL, go easy on yourself. Shorten that to-do list & focus on your own well-being, mama.

What was your most "mom brain" moment? What made you feel better & help regain your sense of self? Share below for all the new mamas! ❤️

🪞According to 53% of women who used the mirror during birth agreed it helped them focus on pushing & reduced pushing time

✨not only that✨

🤰🏽Additionally 58% said it added to their overall labor experience and gave them a positive one!

Using a mirror during the pushing stage can be really helpful for some women.

Pushing during labour is an incredible feat, and every tool that helps us do it effectively is a game-changer. Here's how a mirror can be your ally:

👀 Visual Feedback: Mirrors give you real-time visual feedback on your pushing efforts and give you the encouragement you need to keep going.

🧘‍♀️ Body Connection: Watching yourself in action fosters a deeper connection with your body. You can fine-tune your pushing technique and feel more in control.

🌟 Motivation Boost: Seeing your strength and determination reflected back at you can be incredibly motivating. You've got the power within you!

Remember, the choice to use a mirror during labour is entirely yours. It's about what makes you feel most comfortable and empowered in that moment.

Share your experiences or thoughts on using mirrors during labour in the comments below.

El espejo en el expulsivo .
Espejo ??

There are so many women (too many!) who are still being told, "once a cesarean always a cesarean". W'ere also seeing an increase in providers who are telling C-section moms that their pelvis is "too small", their baby is "too big" or their pregnancies are "too close"so they need to have another C-section. APA says that 9 out of 10 women are candidates for a VBAC, but many women can't find providers who will take them.

So what do you do if you are being told you're not a good candidate for a VBAC? Get a second, third, or even fourth opinion! There are VBAC friendly doctors out there, the key is finding them!

Check out our list of VBAC friendly providers on our page to find friendly providers in your area.

Celebrate YOUR milestones too, mama. You deserve it. 💜

While ideally, we’d be getting all of the nutrients we need from our diet, between modern agriculture, depleted soil, our busy lives, medications like the Pill that deplete us of important nutrients, and symptoms like prenatal nausea that can limit our food intake, unfortunately, many women enter pregnancy not getting what they need from their diets.

In fact, CDC and other studies show us that women of childbearing age in the US are chronically low in numerous nutrients that are critical for optimal well-being of both mom & baby.

Here are the top nutrients/supplements to be sure you're getting at conception, pregnancy, & postpartum:

🤰🏻Vitamin D (2000 units daily) which supports immunity, mood, & blood sugar regulation, helping to prevent gestational diabetes.

🤰🏻Folic acid (400-800 mcg) or preferably, a form of folate called methylfolate (800 mcg daily) (this form is needed if you have the MTHFR but is safe for everyone). Critical for baby’s growing brain & nervous system.

🤰🏻Iodine (300 mcg daily)- essential for mama to have healthy thyroid function which supports baby's brain & overall growth.

🤰🏻Choline (400 mg daily)- Essential for baby’s neurologic development, signaling, & cognitive function, especially memory & focus. Adequate intake may prevent birth defects & provides stress resilience.

🤰🏻Fish oil supplement- most pregnant women in the US are low in Omega-3 fats, also important for baby's brain & nervous system.

🤰🏻Probiotics- may help prevent preterm labor, UTIS, & more, can help protect your baby against allergies and eczema.

🤰🏻Iron if you are low- this should be checked for in your routine blood work. Iron chelate is the most absorbable form, and is non-constipating. Dose is 30-60 mg in pregnancy; taking it with 500mg of buffered ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes it even more absorbable.

Make sure to get these in your diet AND in a prenatal vitamin that provides added assurance!

“While the golden hour may be brief, its impact is immeasurable” 💞

“While the golden hour may be brief, its impact is immeasurable” 💞

The golden hour, also known as the first hour after birth, is a significant and unforgettable time for both mama and baby. During this precious period, the baby is placed skin-to-skin on mama’s chest, creating an immediate connection and promoting bonding.

This close physical contact offers numerous benefits for baby. It helps stabilise their heart rate, regulates body temperature, and encourages the instinctive rooting reflex, which may lead to successful breastfeeding initiation. Additionally, the intimate contact releases hormones like oxytocin and endorphins, fostering a sense of security and love for the baby.

For mama, this golden hour is a time of overwhelming emotions. It's a moment of marveling at the tiny, delicate life they've brought into the world. The sight of their baby's little fingers and toes, the softness of their skin, and the warmth of their breath which creates an indescribable sense of love like no other.

The golden hour serves as a gentle transition for the baby from the protected environment of the womb to the outside world. It's an opportunity for the family to begin their nurturing journey, building a strong foundation of trust and love with their baby. This profound connection forged in the first hour after birth can have a lasting impact on the mother and baby relationship and the baby's overall well-being.

As the moments unfold during this magical hour, the family begins to write the first pages of their unique story together. It's a time of pure authenticity and vulnerability, where the parents witness the rawness of life and the incredible potential of this new little being.

While the golden hour may be brief, its impact is immeasurable. It's a reminder of the power of human connection and the miracles of life. As time moves forward, the memories of this sacred hour will remain cherished, strengthening the bond between parents and their little one for a lifetime. 🌟💕
