A joint is where two or more bones meet and they allow different types of movement.

The joint is held together by a capsule, which stops the bones from moving too far, and inside the capsule, there is an inner lining called the synovium. This makes a thick fluid, known as synovial fluid, that protects the joint.

The ends of the bones are covered with a thin layer of slippery tissue called cartilage. This acts as a protective cushion, stopping the bones from rubbing against each other.

Your muscles are attached to tendons, which are attached to bones. When we move, our muscles pull the tendons, which then pull our bones in certain directions.

1)The female structure. Women have increased joint and ligament mobility compared to men. In other words, women are more limber. This elasticity of the joints allows more movement and therefore greater risk for developing joint pain.

2)Estrogen. The female hormone, estrogen, plays a role in cartilage (the flexible tissue that makes up your joints) protection. When estrogen levels decrease, the amount of cushioning the cartilage provides also decreases. This is significant because the female body experiences estrogen decreases monthly during the menstrual cycle as well as during menopause.

3)Obesity. Although obesity is a factor for both men and women, women have a greater risk of obesity compared to men. Obesity increases the risk of joint pain due to higher levels of stress put on the joints. Studies show that every additional pound of body weight equals four pounds of weight in the knee.

Any damage to a joint, whether it be a disease or injury, can interfere with movement and cause pain (arthralgia). Joint pain can result in discomfort or inflammation from any part of a joint (cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons, or muscles).

Most commonly, the term โ€joint painโ€ refers to arthritis or arthralgia (inflammation or pain from within the joint itself). However, many different conditions can lead to painful joints, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and gout.

Joint pain can also be the result of a strain, sprain, or other injury.

Joint pain can be mild, causing soreness after certain activities. It can also be severe, making even minor movement painful. And, furthermore, weight-bearing activities can be extremely painful.
