Droopy eyelids are caused by a mix of factors that affect the skin, muscles, and connective tissues on our face. Here are the main reasons why our eyelids start to sag:
Age-related changes: As we get older, our skin loses its firmness and elasticity, which leads to sagging. Around the age of 35, collagen production decreases, making skin less firm and more prone to wrinkles. By 40-45, bone loss begins, reducing facial volume, and as a result, the skin and muscles (including those around the eyelids) start to «slide» down.
Complex muscle imbalances: Droopy eyelids aren’t just caused by one muscle. It’s often due to changes in the orbicularis oculi muscle, as well as the forehead and temporal muscles. All of these muscles are interconnected. The orbicularis oculi connects to the forehead muscle, so the position of your eyebrows impacts the eyelids. When the forehead’s aponeurosis becomes stiff, it creates pressure, pulling the eyebrows down and causing the eyelids to sag. 😔
Posture and tension: Our body is interconnected! Poor posture and chronic neck tension can strain fascial chains running from your feet to your forehead. When tissues are tense, it affects the forehead and eyebrows, leading to droopy eyelids. 🧘♀️
Lymphatic drainage issues: Lymph from the forehead and eyes should drain through the aponeurosis to the back of the head and neck. But if you’re hunched over a computer or phone for long periods, lymph drainage can be blocked, causing fluid buildup and swelling of the eyelids.
Skincare and nutrition mistakes: Not taking care of the skin around your eyes or poor nutrition can also contribute to droopy eyelids. Skipping hydration, using the wrong skincare products, or lacking key nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin C can make the skin sag faster.
Droopy eyelids are a result of multiple interconnected factors: aging skin, muscle imbalances, posture issues, lymphatic drainage, and even diet. Everything in the body is connected, and when one part falls out of balance, it affects others, including the muscles and skin around the eyes.
