Why is this statement, that every influencer says, so triggering for me???

Like I’m not going to get healthier and fitter or whatever just because you did. I’m going to do it because I choose to and not because you say it’s conditional (If..then..) upon you doing it.

If I think I can do it, then I can do it.

Like okay, I get it. You’re trying to be motivational and inspirational or whatever. But just because you did it, does not mean the person reading that statement will do it or has the capability to do it too. And in the same way you did it. We are all individuals, with different bodies and body types, so we will respond to your way of “losing weight” differently than you did. Even the same person will respond to a workout routine, that helped them lose weight before, differently or not even at all at another stage in their life.

If you want to be motivational and inspirational, put the power in their hands. EMPOWER them to make the changes they need to specifically for themselves. The power shouldn’t come from an external source.

👉🏽Always remember & believe:
If you 🫵🏽 think you can do it, then you can do it.

There is no “getting your body back.” There is only going forward.

The body you used to have has changed. So grow with it. Adapt. Evolve.

Into something, someone better.

If you are stuck in the past, you are stuck in your mindset to change in the now and for the future.

Don’t let your past body and past life hold you back.

Rise up,

Phases of HPA Axis Dysfunction

Normal: Waking up in the morning is supposed to produce a normal rise in cortisol (50-160%), called the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR). These are the first 3 points on a salivary cortisol test. From the 3rd point on, the cortisol levels decrease so that you are able to fall asleep at night.

Phase 1: (Over)compensation of the adrenals & HPA axis due to stress, pain, etc. Too much cortisol is produced which can make it hard to fall asleep and get a good night’s rest. It can also cause that abdominal weight gain you just can’t shake, lowered immune system, & more health issues.

Phase 2: Chronic stress over an extended period of time results in your HPA axis and adrenals to become underactive. It may look like dragging your feet in the morning when waking, afternoon fatigue/crash, often sick, depression, etc.

Phase 3: Burnout happens when your HPA axis is just tapped out. You may be more apathetic and not enjoy things or exercise like you usually have. Low cortisol production is not good for many reasons, but most of all, cortisol is needed to live!

But don’t you fret! You can come back from any of the phases. However, it does take time. See my next post to find out what you can do to get your HPA axis back on track!

Does this ⬆️ sound like you??

You might have HPA Axis Dysfunction, more commonly known as “adrenal fatigue” (which doesn’t actually really exist). The HPA axis is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which is the hormonal cascade from the brain to the adrenal glands & back. Hence, it’s much more than the adrenal glands that are affected.

Chronic stress, whether mentally, emotionally, or physically, can impact your HPA axis. It can be due to:
📍overtraining 🏋🏻‍♀️
📍too much caffeine, esp on an empty stomach ☕️ ☕️
📍gut dysfunction 🦠 💩
📍unhealthy sleep habits 😴
📍mom life 😵‍💫
📍hustle culture
📍undereating, esp long-term
📍trauma (all sources including emotional)
& more

More on the stages of HPA Axis Dysfunction and treatments later this week!

Why You Shouldn’t Say, “Take a deep breath.”

Taking a deep breath induces someone to over-breathe. Your body’s physiology depends more on carbon dioxide levels than oxygen. When taking a deep breath in, the O2 levels rise and more CO2 is breathed out quickly, thus decreases in the blood. When this happens, O2 doesn’t actually leave the bloodstream because there isn’t enough CO2 in the blood to allow the O2 to leave and go to the brain, muscle, and other organs. Then symptoms of over-breathing arise, making stress/anxiety symptoms worse. Unless your body metabolically needs more O2, such as during exercise, you don’t need a deep breath. You need to breathe low and slow.

Here’s how:
1. Put one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. Instead of breathing with your chest, breathe with your diaphragm/belly.
2. Take a NORMAL breath in. More movement should be on your belly than your chest.
3. Exhale slowly, making your exhalation longer than inhalation.
4. Repeat & inhale for 4 sec & exhale for 6, until anxiety and stress symptoms subside. A longer exhalation puts you more into a parasympathetic state (rest & digest) vs sympathetic (fight or flight).

✨Pro tip: Imagine breathing out through honey with pursed lips to slowly release the breath.

Save for future reference!

April is Stress Awareness Month. For Wellness Wednesdays this month, I’ll be talking more about Stress Resiliency & Management.
