The Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation spotlighted a number of symptoms that are common during the menopause transition. Among other findings, it confirmed that muscle stiffness complaints were most prevalent during menopause, affecting 54% of US women aged 40 to 55. This is also the time when ovarian hormone levels decrease significantly. These facts led researchers to conduct a new study specifically designed to evaluate the effect of different types of menopause on muscle discomfort and function in late-postmenopausal women aged 55 years and older. The study concluded that women experiencing premature surgical menopause were more likely to develop musculoskeletal discomfort and sarcopenia than those with natural menopause. Results of the study are published online today in Menopause, the journal of The Menopause Society. For more information via the Press Release, visit https://tinyurl.com/mte38t4f.

A recent large-scale study suggests the benefits and risks of hormone therapy (HT) beyond age 65 differ depending on type of HT, route, and dose.
• For healthy women with persistent hot flashes, continuing HT beyond age 65 is a reasonable option.
• The use of estrogen monotherapy after age 65 was associated with significant risk reductions in mortality, cancer, heart issues, dementia, among others.

Researchers addressed the lack of information on HT effects after age 65 by carefully examining its usage and health outcomes. The Menopause Society’s 2022 HT Position Statement stresses the importance of individual risk-benefit assessments, highlighting that there is no one-size-fits-all rule for discontinuing HT at 65.

Hormone therapy (HT) is already recognized as the most effective treatment option for physiologic symptoms, such as hot flashes, but a new study is one of the first to suggest that it might also help manage depressive symptoms.

• Over half of the study participants (62%) scored as being depressed during menopause, although the symptoms may not necessarily reach the severity of a major depressive disorder.
• Based on their results, the researchers concluded that HT whether used alone or in conjunction with antidepressants seemed to improve not only hot flashes, but also depressive symptoms associated with .
