Honey badgers have rubbery, armor-like skin that resists bites and stings, can twist to fight while being held, and have jaws strong enough to crush tortoise shells.

In 1903, a wealthy businessman gambled his entire fortune on a hole in the Arizona desert. Scientists called him a fool.

He died penniless—but decades later, they realized he was largely right about the crater's origin.

This was Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, a massive feature in Arizona already known to 19th-century settlers and Indigenous peoples. Scientists at the time largely dismissed it as volcanic.

Daniel Barringer, a mining engineer, began his passionate quest in 1903. He argued the crater was formed by a meteorite impact, challenging the prevailing scientific consensus.

Prominent geologist Grove Karl Gilbert had, in 1891, concluded it was merely a volcanic steam explosion. However, that same year, Albert E. Foote had already published a scientific paper on meteorites found at the site, even identifying microscopic diamonds within the iron fragments.

Barringer dedicated 26 years and his considerable fortune to proving his impact theory. He conducted extensive drilling operations, searching for a massive, intact meteorite he believed lay buried beneath the crater floor.

His evidence, including meteorite fragments clearly mixed with rock ejected from the crater, strongly supported an impact. Yet, his assumption that the meteorite survived largely intact was incorrect; the colossal object had mostly vaporized upon impact, dooming his mining venture financially.

Daniel Barringer passed away in 1929, bankrupt and often ridiculed for his unwavering belief. His family, however, retained ownership of the crater.

It wasn't until the 1960s, long after his death, that the scientific community broadly accepted the impact origin of Meteor Crater, vindicating Barringer's core idea.
