🌸 October is Menopause Awareness Month 🌸

Menopause is a natural part of life but it is often overlooked or misunderstood. This October we are shining a light on the importance of awareness, empathy and proactive healthcare.

💜 Why primary care matters:
Your primary care provider is often the first person to notice changes, start important conversations and guide you through this transition. From managing symptoms to ensuring preventive screenings and mental health support, primary care plays a vital role in helping women thrive through menopause and beyond.

💬 Let’s talk about it:
• Menopause symptoms can affect every part of life but you do not have to navigate them alone.
• Regular check-ups can help detect related health risks early (such as heart disease, osteoporosis and mental health changes).
• Open conversations with your primary care team can lead to personalised care and better quality of life.

Knowledge is key. When women and healthcare providers share open, informed conversations it leads to better care and stronger support.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month because protecting information is protecting patients.

At NovaHS, supporting the practices we work with is at the heart of what we do, helping primary care teams deliver safe, connected and trusted services.

Behind every digital interaction, from every login to every shared record and every referral, lies the same responsibility that drives us all in healthcare: to keep our patients safe.

As technology becomes more deeply embedded in how care is delivered, from digital records to online consultations, our responsibility to protect the data and systems that make that care possible grows too.

Cyber security is essential because it safeguards the continuity and quality of care. A secure digital environment ensures clinical correspondence, pharmacy processes and patient communications can continue without disruption. It protects sensitive information, supports accurate clinical decisions and upholds the trust that patients place in their primary care teams every day.

At NovaHS, we take cyber security seriously and see it as everyone’s responsibility. Through regular staff training and continual awareness, we ensure our teams have the knowledge and confidence to keep information safe and services running smoothly. The practices we work with know how seriously we take this commitment and trust us to maintain the highest standards of digital safety.

Our multidisciplinary services, from clinical correspondence workflow and document management to clinical support and pharmacy services, are designed around three core pillars: safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Perhaps our unwritten fourth pillar is reliability, because every part of what we do depends on systems and people our partners can trust. Cyber security plays a vital role in ensuring that reliability remains constant.

As highlighted in NHS England’s Cyber Security Strategy for Health and Social Care, strong digital defences underpin safe, continuous and confident care.

This month and every month, NovaHS stands with our partners in making cyber safety an integral part of patient care.

🌍 World Mental Health Day 2025 🌍

World Mental Health Day, recognised each year on 10 October, is a moment to reflect on the importance of mental health and its place at the heart of overall wellbeing.

The 2025 theme “access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies” highlights the need for mental health support to remain accessible, responsive and inclusive even in times of crisis.

Across the primary care system professionals play a vital role in identifying and supporting people experiencing mental health challenges. From GPs and nurses to pharmacists and social prescribers, primary care often provides the first point of contact and a space where conversations about mental wellbeing can begin.

This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing work within primary care to ensure that mental and physical health are treated with equal importance and that access to compassionate, integrated care is available to all.

Celebrating the Work of Alzheimer’s Society

Earlier this month we shared a post to mark Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Today we want to shine a light on the incredible work of Alzheimer’s Society.

The charity provides vital support for people living with dementia and their families through their dementia support line, local services and online community. They ensure no one has to face dementia alone.

Alzheimer’s Society also funds pioneering research into the causes, treatment and prevention of dementia while campaigning nationally to make dementia a priority across health and social care. Their work is helping to drive change, challenge stigma and improve quality of life for those affected.

Every donation, conversation and campaign they lead makes a difference for the millions of people whose lives are touched by dementia.

You can learn more about their work or get involved at alzheimers.org.uk.

Migraine Awareness Week: Time to Strengthen Support and Access to Care

Migraine is thought to affect around 1 in 7 people in the UK yet it often goes undiagnosed and unrecognised. Only about 3% of adults are recorded as having migraine.

Among those who seek care, fewer than 40% are believed to be offered preventive treatment and less than 1 in 4 are referred when first-line treatments do not work.
This year’s theme, “Migraine Means”, is about showing the real impact migraine has. It highlights not only the symptoms people endure but also the challenges they face in daily life and at work. It underlines why better support and access to care are so vital.

Migraine has a major effect on quality of life, often limiting education, careers and social participation.

The condition also carries a significant economic impact through lost productivity and healthcare costs.

Beyond this, many people experience stigma or misunderstanding, which adds to the burden of living with migraine.

This week, let us not only raise migraine awareness but also push to ensure the needs of people with migraine are not overlooked.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month

It is estimated that every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia. Stigma and lack of awareness remain some of the biggest barriers to diagnosis, care and support.

Primary care plays a vital role in spotting the early signs, supporting families and guiding people towards the right help. GPs, nurses and community health teams are often the first point of contact, making their awareness and confidence essential in improving outcomes.

This year, let’s commit to:

✔️ Raising awareness and challenging misconceptions
✔️ Supporting carers with compassion and resources
✔️ Advocating for early diagnosis and better access to care
✔️ Remembering that behind every statistic is a person, a story and a family

Together we can break the silence and create a more inclusive, dementia-friendly world.

💡 How is your organisation or community supporting awareness this month? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week and Primary Care

From 15th –19th September, we mark Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week. RA is an autoimmune condition that can be painful, exhausting and often invisible.

This year’s theme is symptoms—helping more people recognise when something may need attention rather than being dismissed as “just wear and tear.”

Primary care is usually the first point of contact. Every consultation is an opportunity to listen, reduce stigma and guide people towards timely assessment and coordinated care.

Early conversations can lead to earlier treatment, better long-term outcomes and less joint damage.

Primary care also anchors prevention and treatment. Regular touchpoints support medicine reviews and monitoring, vaccine uptake, support to stop smoking, sleep and movement advice and help with day-to-day needs like fit notes and workplace adjustments.

On this week, let us recognise those living with RA and strengthen our resolve as a healthcare community.

By working together across primary care, we can turn awareness into earlier help and better outcomes.

Stand Up To Cancer and the Role of Primary Care

Today marks an important awareness movement: hashtag .

Primary care plays a vital role in this challenge. It is often the first line of defence. From early detection and screening to open conversations with patients about symptoms and risks, primary care professionals are essential in identifying cancer earlier and improving outcomes.

Raising awareness is not only about treatment. It is also about prevention, education and supporting people to take action on their health.
Together we can continue to support patients, communities and a future with fewer cancer diagnoses.
