Today is PTSD Awareness Day

PTSD can affect anyone and often primary care is the first place people turn when they are struggling but do not yet have the words to explain why.

This is why it matters that we listen without judgement stay informed and create space for open conversations. Every interaction in primary care is a chance to spot the signs offer support and help someone take the first step towards healing.

Let’s keep learning stay compassionate and work together to reduce stigma and make support accessible for all.

Healthy Hobbies Spotlight: Darby Collins

In this edition of our Healthy Hobbies series, we’re highlighting Darby Collins, our brilliant Executive Assistant and her commitment to keeping fit.

From weekly gym sessions to taking on fun runs with friends, Darby makes staying active a regular part of her routine. Most recently, she took part in a 10K fun run in Worcester, a great example of how she combines fitness with a bit of fun and social time.

Darby says:

"I’m not trying to break any records, it’s just nice to do something active that feels good. The Worcester 10K was a great laugh. I went with friends and we definitely did more chatting than racing!"

We love seeing how our team finds their own ways to stay well and Darby’s relaxed, down-to-earth approach is a great reminder that fitness can be fun.

What gets you moving or helps you unwind, we’d love to hear your healthy hobby!

🔵 Diabetes Awareness Week 2025 🔵

This year’s theme is "Shining a Light on the Daily Realities". It highlights what life is really like for people living with diabetes and the ongoing challenges they face in managing the condition every day.

More than 5 million people in the UK live with diabetes and many others remain undiagnosed. Increasing awareness is vital and can:

✅ Help people recognise early signs and symptoms
✅ Encourage timely contact with primary care services
✅ Support better understanding of Type 1, Type 2 and other forms of diabetes
✅ Promote the importance of regular health checks
✅ Reduce stigma and spark helpful conversations

Primary care teams play a vital role in supporting people to manage these daily realities. From diagnosis and education to routine reviews and long-term care, their role is essential.

This week we want to recognise the many individuals in GP practices who make a daily difference including:

👏 GPs and practice nurses who provide clinical advice and care planning
👏 Healthcare assistants who support regular reviews and health checks
👏 Pharmacists who offer medication support and lifestyle guidance
👏 Reception and admin staff who help patients access the care they need
👏 Diabetes leads and specialist nurses who guide long-term management

Your work supports early detection and ongoing care and helps people feel more in control of their health.

Let’s continue to raise awareness so more people can recognise the signs, seek support early and feel seen in their daily experience of diabetes.

🌟 It’s Carers Week 2025 and this year’s theme is “Equality for Carers” 🌟

Unpaid carers across the UK provide essential support to family, friends and loved ones. Many of them do this alongside demanding jobs in the NHS and primary care, where they give so much of themselves both at work and at home.

At novahs, we stand with carers. We recognise the unique pressures they face and the incredible value they bring to both their families and our health and care services.

⚖️ Equality for carers means creating fairer workplaces and communities where carers are respected, supported and given the same opportunities as everyone else.
It means ensuring their needs are heard and that they are never made to choose between their work, their wellbeing and their caring responsibilities.

We see you, we support you and we are committed to making equality for carers a reality.

Let’s keep raising awareness and building a society where caring is recognised and no one is left behind.

🔷 National Patient Participation Week 2025 🔷
This week we celebrate Patient Participation Group (PPG) Awareness Week – a chance to recognise the invaluable role patients play in shaping and supporting primary care services.

PPGs act as a bridge between GP practices and their communities, offering feedback, sharing ideas and driving improvement from the ground up. They are not just advisory – they are collaborative, forward-thinking and often at the heart of local engagement.

📊 Did you know?

Over 90% of GP practices in England now have a PPG in place (NHS England) but public awareness remains limited – something this week aims to change

PPGs are not just about feedback. In many areas, they have helped to launch wellbeing projects, improve digital access and provide local community support (National Association for Patient Participation – N.A.P.P)

The NHS Long Term Plan highlights patient voice as essential to reducing health inequalities and delivering more personalised care

🙌 So here's to all the dedicated PPG members, healthcare professionals and community leaders working together to make care better, more inclusive and more responsive.

Let’s keep the conversation going and continue improving together.

Collaborative Working That Delivers Real Impact for Patients

At novahs, our mission has always been clear: to support GP practices in delivering safer patient care through more efficient and cost-effective solutions.

We’re proud to share this incredible feedback from a practice we support in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, who recently rated us 5 out of 5 across the board, from onboarding and communication to ongoing support and the overall value we bring.

Their Practice Business Manager shared:

"We found the transition to novahs very smooth and were impressed by how quickly they were up and running. The GPs have all been very happy with the work that novahs have undertaken. The quality of work has been good, we are well-supported by an Admin Manager and the response to any queries has been speedy and effective. We would highly recommend novahs."

This feedback came after one of our regular catch-up meetings with their admin and clinical team. It's a true reflection of what can be achieved when we work closely with our practices.

✅ Improved practice operations
✅ Safer patient care
✅ More efficient, cost-effective solutions
✅ Trusted, responsive support
✅ Seamless onboarding
✅ Clear value worth recommending

We’re incredibly proud of the partnerships we’re building and even prouder of the impact we’re helping practices make for their patients.

Dementia Action Week | 19 to 25 May 2025

This week is Dementia Action Week, a national opportunity to raise awareness, improve understanding and encourage action to support those living with dementia.

It is estimated that nearly one million people in the UK are affected by dementia, with numbers expected to rise. Dementia impacts memory, communication, behaviour and everyday decision-making. It also places increasing demands on families, carers and healthcare services.

Primary care plays a vital role in recognising early signs of dementia, providing compassionate support and connecting patients and carers with the right resources. Timely diagnosis and ongoing care in primary settings can make a significant difference to quality of life.

Thank you to our primary care colleagues for the important part they play in supporting people living with dementia every day.

This week provides a moment to reflect on how primary care, along with communities and individuals, can continue to support people living with dementia more effectively.

💬 How are you or your organisation marking Dementia Action Week?
Are you raising awareness in your workplace or community?
Have you made changes to create a more dementia-friendly environment?
Are you encouraging conversations or learning more about dementia?

Please share your experiences, ideas or reflections in the comments. Every action counts.

This week marks Children’s Hospice Week (16–22 May)

A time to shine a light on the vital services that support seriously ill children and their families across the UK.

It is estimated that around 49,000 children and young people in the UK are living with health conditions that are life-limiting or life-threatening. These children and their families face immense challenges emotionally physically and practically.

Specialist services provide essential support to help families make the most of every moment together. This includes symptom management emotional care short breaks support in the home end-of-life care and bereavement support.

The theme this year is Life’s Short. It is a powerful reminder of how precious time is and why support for children and families matters so much.

Primary care plays a key role in this support. GPs and community teams are often the first point of contact for families. They help coordinate ongoing care provide medical and emotional support at home contribute to advance care planning and continue to support families through bereavement. Their work ensures that care is compassionate continuous and close to home.

Many services are under increasing pressure and need our collective support to continue doing the extraordinary work they do every day.

Let us take this opportunity to raise awareness show appreciation and advocate for sustainable access to care that every child and family deserves.

If there is a charity or service in this space that you support we would love to hear about it in the comments.

On the Road: Northampton LMC Practice Manager Development Day

This past Wednesday we had the pleasure of attending the Northampton LMC Practice Manager Meeting and it was a brilliant event.

The room was full of insightful talks covering local initiatives, the evolving role of AI in healthcare and the challenges practices are navigating in today’s NHS landscape. These conversations are more relevant than ever as practices look to future-proof their systems while maintaining safe and patient-centred care.

For the novahs team it was particularly valuable to connect with Practice Managers already using our services and with those seeking support in areas like clinical document management. We know how significant this area is when it comes to time, safety and compliance and we’re proud to be part of the solution.

Events like this are a powerful reminder that innovation in primary care doesn’t happen in isolation. It is built through collaboration, shared learning and honest conversations about what is working and what is not.

To the organisers and everyone we met we want to say a sincere thank you. We left feeling energised, encouraged and even more committed to supporting our NHS colleagues.

If we didn’t get a chance to speak on the day we would love to connect.
