Biomarker testing is a method involved in examining genes, proteins, and other biological substances, also known as biomarkers or tumour markers, to obtain crucial information about a patient's cancer. Everyone’s cancer has a unique biomarker pattern, and certain biomarkers can affect an individual’s response to certain cancer treatments.

Notably, biomarker testing is different from genetic testing, which is used to determine whether someone has inherited mutations that may increase their risk of cancer.

Biomarker testing is a crucial aspect of personalised medicine in cancer care, where treatments are customised based on the specific genes, proteins, and other substances present in an individual's body. Personalised treatment can also help avoid treatments that have no benefit to the patient.

Did you know?

People treated for tuberculosis (TB) are 80% more likely to get cancer than a control group. A retrospective study of more than 145,000 Koreans found that rates of lung, blood, gynaecological and gastrointestinal cancers were higher among those who had been infected with TB. “Screening and management for cancer should be warranted in patients with TB even after successful cure of TB,” researchers reported at a recent European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

Another option for treatment is....

Chemotherapy (can also be shortened to chemo).
It is a treatment option that uses drugs to kill cancer cells.

Cancer cells tend to grow and divide quickly. Chemo works by stopping or slowing their growth. Chemo is used for two main reasons:

As treatment: Can be used to get rid of cancer cells, lessen the chance of it returning or slow its growth.

Ease symptoms: Used to shrink the tumour that is causing pain and other problems.

Patients receive chemo in cycles. For example, you may receive one week of treatment and 3 weeks of rest, a total of 4 weeks. This makes up a cycle (treatment and rest days combined).

There are many types of chemo drugs. What is given will depend on:
· Type of cancer and how advanced it is

· Whether the patient was given chemo previously

· Whether the patient has other health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease

In addition to killing cancer cells, chemo can also affect healthy cells. This can lead to side effects, such as mouth sores, hair loss and nausea. It is important to know that chemo affects people in different ways. So, it is important to let your doctor/nurse know how you are reacting.

It's Bowel Cancer Awareness Month!

is a complex disease, and while early stages may seem straightforward to treat, diagnosis and care plans must be well-considered to avoid undesirable variations in care that may cause avoidable harm to patients.

The we find important is to have a team of experts involved in a patient's care plan to ensure a thorough understanding of the patient's condition and treatment options. A team-based approach increases the likelihood of patients receiving a personalised care plan.

Cancer is a complex disease that can be difficult to treat. However, with ongoing research and development, more treatment options are becoming available for patients.

One common treatment option is surgery. Here’s a quick Q&A overview:

What types of cancer can be treated with surgery?

Many types of cancer are treated with surgery. Surgery works best for solid tumours contained in one area. It is a local treatment, meaning that it treats only the part of your body that has the tumour. It is not used for non-solid tumours such as blood cancers.

What types of surgery are there?

Surgery may be open or minimally invasive.

In open surgery, one large cut is made to remove the tumour, some healthy tissue and if required some nearby lymph nodes.

In minimally invasive surgery (sometimes called laparoscopic surgery), the surgeon makes a few small cuts instead of one large one and inserts a long, thin tube with a tiny camera (laparoscope) into one of the small cuts. The camera projects magnified images from the inside of the body onto a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see what is taking place. The surgeon uses special surgery tools which are inserted through the other small cuts to remove the tumour and some healthy tissue for analysis.

Because minimally invasive surgery requires smaller cuts, it takes less time to recover from than open surgery.
