🌕✨ Tonight’s Buck Moon: a rare golden full moon and a Major Lunar Standstill! 🦌✨
July’s Full Buck Moon rises tonight, marking the season when male deer grow their velvety new antlers — a powerful symbol of growth, renewal, and strength in many cultures. But this isn’t just any Buck Moon — it’s the farthest full moon of the year, happening just days after Earth reached aphelion (its farthest point from the Sun), and it coincides with a rare Major Lunar Standstill, making its path unusually low and wide in the night sky.
Look to the eastern horizon just after sunset to see a glowing golden orb slowly rising. Tonight, the Moon will stay low in the sky, skimming just above the southern horizon as it moves west through the night, finally setting in the southwest by dawn.
✨ Why does it look so golden?
When the Moon is low, its light travels through a thicker slice of Earth’s atmosphere. The shorter blue light gets scattered away, while the longer red and orange wavelengths shine through — just like a sunset.
