Black people in Africa and the African Diaspora across the world have always had incredible history, origins & cultural practices that ensured the mental wellness of the members of the community were taken care of. This knowledge should not be forgotten and should be included in the global mental health system to help Black people get timely and appropriate mental health interventions.

Blake Lively once said that the best thing you can wear is confidence and as you can see from this photo, Dotty and Michelle took those words very seriously.

The two of them joined Bright Star after word of mouth reached them about the work that we do. They have been attending sessions consistently and the results have been incredible.

Once where there was timidity and fear and worry about life, now lies confidence, wellness and a rekindled spirit of unstoppability.

We cannot wait to see Dotty, Michelle and our other young mothers pass on the knowledge and skills they have learned at Bright Star to their fellow peers in schools and in their communities.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE MUMS: Today the spotlight is on Mediadrack Halima. Mediadrack(More fondly known as Medi or Mama Bianca) was the joint second mum to join the Bright Star Initiative.

Over the time she has been with us, she has demonstrated not only consistency in attending the sessions, but was very helpful in offering level-headed solutions in heated discussions and helping us to better understand the deep issues affecting her and her community and how best we could fashion our interventions to best assist.

We are happy to have been a part of her journey as we witnessed her mindset change from considering herself a victim of the system, to being an integral part of changing the system that is challenging a lot of young mothers in Kenya.

There is a quote that says "Always do your best because you never know who is watching." In the case of Babu Biko, it was Fahim who was intensely watching, imitating and inadvertently became a co-facilitator for one of the Bright Star Initiative's mental health coaching sessions.

It is often underestimated, the stories that can be shared, the barriers and stigma that can be broken and the healing can take place when friends share stories over a meal.

This is why it is our core mission to bring the Black voice into the global mental health system. Ensuring our values, knowledge, skills and ingenuity as Black people are included will ensure Black people are able to get mental health care that is not only affirming, but culturally appropriate.

Sometimes the load becomes easier to carry when we have someone to share it with. In photo, Olivia(center) animatedly shares her story during one of our mental health sessions, as Dotty and Pauline listen keenly.

Over the next few months, the young mothers will be reaching out to their community members and to fellow peers to share, through theoretical and practical approaches, some of the knowledge and experience, they have learnt at Bright Star in the true spirit of

SPOTLIGHT ON THE MUMS: Today we would like to focus on one of our young mums called Dorothy.
Dorothy(more affectionately called Doro) is a very soft spoken but authoritative member of The Bright Star Initiative. She not only takes care of her baby beautifully, but also helps the other young mothers when they are unsure about an approach to take in baby care. She is a big advocate for all mothers taking care of themselves during and after the pregnancy. In addition, when we have activities at Bright Star, such as bhajia making or hair washing days, she is usually at the forefront, going above and beyond to take the initiative to give support to the team whenever they need it.

We, the team and the young mums, are lucky to have her on board The Bright Star Initiative.

Dorcas Mazune has been the incredible force behind the success of the Bright Star Initiative. Fuelled by her own personal stories and stories from her friends, she founded the Bright Star Initiative with the aim of bringing comfort and support to young mothers who faced a lot of insults, stigma and discrimination from friends, family and their community.

She started with only two young mothers and now has been able to reach over 50 young mothers in Kibera and Mathare; offering them a safe space to talk about the issues facing them, giving them mental health support, providing advocacy and skills training, providing basic hair and skin hygiene(during the unique hair washing day) and helping them get baby diapers and clothes.

Dorcas is currently studying counselling Psychology at with the hope of gaining the knowledge to fully support our young mothers.

Sometimes all we need is a community that understands and validates us to feel whole again. The Bright Star Initiative continues to support young mothers in and in Nairobi with mental health coaching, food and baby supplies, basic hair and skin hygiene and advocacy and skills training.

In an effort to extrapolate what they have learned, the young mums will be embarking on an audacious journey to pay forward to the community, what they have learned from Bright Star.

For many young mothers like Pauline, having a baby at a young age brings with it a lot of stigma from the community. Stigma that can quickly extinguish their joy, their smiles, their aspirations and their dreams. During The Bright Star sessions we hold every week, it is always a joy to see our young mothers smile. It is a joy to see them share their stories. It is a joy to see the spark in their eyes slowly rekindle and discover that their wellness and the wellness of their babies is well within their reach.

If we can ensure the policies we make at all levels understand the intersectionality between mental health and all social structures, then we can begin to make steps towards having an inclusive global mental health system.
