MOBILE GAMES AND HEALTH
By Dr. Chev Mariano-Gasmen
Mobile games have become increasingly popular in recent years, and many of us are finding ourselves spending more and more time glued to our screens. While mobile games can be a fun and engaging way to pass the time, there are also concerns about the effects they may have on our health.
One of the most obvious effects of mobile games on health is their impact on our physical well-being. Prolonged sitting while playing mobile games can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, which increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and other health problems. Additionally, the blue light emitted by mobile screens can disrupt our natural sleep patterns, making it harder to fall asleep at night and leading to fatigue and poor concentration during the day.
Another potential effect of mobile games on health is their impact on our mental well-being. Studies have shown that excessive gaming can be associated with an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and social isolation. This may be due to the fact that mobile games can be highly addictive, causing players to neglect other aspects of their lives, including relationships, work, and school.
Furthermore, some studies have suggested that excessive mobile gaming can lead to decreased cognitive function, as the brain gets accustomed to the fast-paced, high-stimulation gameplay of mobile games. The over-stimulation of brain might lead to less focus and attention to everyday tasks.
It is important to note that not all mobile games have a negative impact on health and well-being. In fact, many mobile games can have positive effects on health, such as improving cognitive function and hand-eye coordination. Many mobile games also promote teamwork and social interaction, which can be beneficial for mental well-being.
In conclusion, the effects of playing mobile games on health will vary depending on the individual and the type of game they are playing. Mobile games can be fun and engaging, but excessive playing can lead to negative impacts on physical and mental health. It is important to be aware of these potential risks and to take steps to mitigate them by setting limits, taking breaks, and engaging in other activities.
The Bible says,
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”—1 Corinthians 10:31.
