Is dark chocolate good for your heart health?

The good news is yes, dark chocolate can provide several heart health benefits when consumed in moderation as part of a healthy diet. Some of these include:

- Lowering blood pressure – dark chocolate contains flavanols, which can help relax the blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

- Reducing Inflammation – dark chocolate also contains antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the body, which is a risk factor for heart disease.

- Improving cholesterol profile – studies have shown that consuming dark chocolate can improve the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol in the blood and lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

- Improving blood flow – the flavanols in dark chocolate can also help improve blood flow to the heart and brain, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

It’s important to note that these benefits are primarily associated with chocolate that contains a high percentage of cocoa (at least 70%). Sadly, milk chocolate and white chocolate do not offer the same benefits, as they contain much lower levels of cocoa solids.

What dark chocolate does have in common with its white and milk counterparts is it will contribute to weight gain if eaten in high quantities so moderation is the key to reaping its health benefits.

Worried you may have a hereditary heart condition?

If you have lost a loved one to a heart condition, it’s understandable that you may be worried about your own heart health. But there are some things you can do to help yourself and ease any concerns you may have.

Know the symptoms of heart problems. Dizzy spells, palpitations, blackouts and shortness of breath are all potential warning signs so best to get them checked out.

Keep an eye on your lifestyle. If you are drinking lots of alcohol, not exercising and carrying too much weight, you may be increasing your chances of heart problems.

If a close relative has been diagnosed with a heart condition, you can get yourself checked at a specialist centre.

Being aware of hereditary heart conditions and actively making an effort to improve your heart’s health can make all the difference.

Staying hydrated plays a vital role in keeping your heart healthy.

When you are dehydrated, the amount of oxygenated blood being pumped around your body decreases, which can leave you feeling fatigued. To combat this, your heart rate and blood pressure increase, which can put you at risk of serious heart conditions.

To help avoid dehydration, here are three easy ways to regularly get water onboard:

Carry a water bottle with you – this simple yet effective habit will make sure you stay properly hydrated helping to regulate your temperature and support nutrition absorption.

Drink two glasses of water when you wake up – starting your day with water can have significant health benefits as your body is naturally dehydrated when you sleep. Drinking water as the first thing you do helps rehydrate your body, kickstart your metabolism, and flush out toxins.

Set reminders on your phone – it can be easy to forget to drink water when you are having a busy day, so setting reminders is a great way to make sure you are drinking an adequate amount of water each day.

An ECG test can help identify problems such as:

- Heart attacks - sudden blockage of blood supply to the heart.
- Cardiomyopathy - enlargement or thickening of the heart walls.
- Arrhythmias - irregular, slow, or fast heartbeats.
- Coronary heart disease – an interruption or blockage of the heart's blood supply due to the accumulation of fatty substances.

What Can An ECG Show?

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple test that can be used to check your heart's rhythm and electrical activity. The ECG device is attached to your chest and detects the electrical signals produced by your heart every time it beats.

These signals are recorded and are looked at by our Cardiology Team to see if there is anything unusual. The whole test can be done from the comfort of your own home with results available within 72 hours of us receiving back your device.

An ECG can help detect:

- Arrhythmias – where the heart beats too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly

- Coronary heart disease – where the heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances

- Heart attacks – where the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked

- Cardiomyopathy – where the heart walls become thickened or enlargedIf you have any concerns about your heart health, an ECG test can help you get the answers you need.

While a cup of coffee or a caffeinated beverage can give you that extra boost you need, it's important to be mindful of your caffeine intake.

Caffeine increases your heart rate and blood pressure which can lead to a higher risk of hypertension, heart attack, stroke or other life-threatening health problems. Too much caffeine can also cause headaches, anxiety, insomnia, stomach irritation and an irregular heartbeat.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when having your next cup of coffee:

- Too much caffeine can cause dehydration – caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it can increase urine production and lead to dehydration if consumed in excessive amounts. Be sure to hydrate properly and balance your caffeine intake with plenty of water.

- Limit adding sugar or syrups – although sugars and syrups aren’t caffeinated, many people tend to enjoy their drinks with a spoonful of sugar or a dash of syrup. Too much sugar can cause your blood sugar levels to spike, which is often followed by a crash leading to feelings of fatigue and cravings for more sugar.

- Don’t drink caffeine before bed – caffeine is a stimulant that can interfere with your sleep cycle. Try and have your last caffeinated beverage at least six hours before going to sleep or opt for decaf.

If you are worried about your heart health, our at-home ECG tests will provide you with valuable information you can act on.
