Instead of Oneness, a great way to look at Non Duality is the collapse of all pairs of opposites, pairs like:
Some people hang out in the left column, but this can be ironically dualistic. Beyond yet including both is where it gets interesting!

There are five sayings that Ma repeated so frequently, they could be considered as Her โMahavakyasโ or Great Sayings:
โขThere is only one Brahman without a second.
โข In the Divine is everything with no omission.
โข To find oneโs Self is to find God and to find God is to find oneโs Self.
โข All is the Lord.
โข The Lord can be defined in whatever way you will: All is He.

Frederic Spiegelberg coined โthe religion of no-religionโ in the 50s.
In 2007, religion scholar Jeffrey Kripal summarized Spiegelberg's approach to religion as follows:
Spiegelbergโs phrase "the religion of no religion" had deep existential roots. It was based on a mystical encounter with the natural world he experienced as a young theology student. He was walking in a wheat field on a bright day when, quite suddenly, his ego vanished and what he calls the Self appeared. Through this altered perspective, he began to see that God was shining through everything in the world, that everything was divine, that there was nothing but holiness. As he reveled in this revelation, he came around a corner and found himself confronting a gray church.
He was horrified. How, he asked himself, could such a building claim to hold something more sacred, more divine, than what he had just experienced in the poppies, birds, and sky of the now divinized cosmos? It all seemed preposterous, utterly preposterous, to him. From the theological scandal of this initial altered state, Spiegelberg developed and theorized what was essentially (or non-essentially) an apophatic mystical theology that approaches religious language, symbol, and myth as non-literal projective expressions of some deeper metaphysical truth that, paradoxically, is simultaneously immanent and transcendentโa kind of dialectical or mystical humanism, if you will. It was just such a comparative mystical theology grounded in the natural world, and just such a critical but deep engagement with the religious traditions of the world, that inspired Murphy and his colleagues in their new venture.[3]

(excerpt):
"The spiritual bypass is especially dangerous at this time in history, not necessarily for the people engaging in it, but because this pattern often leads to negligence. Itโs a huge bummer that a mentally ill tyrant is now leader of the free world, and if the spiritual bypass is running the show, that reality can easily be avoided in the name of getting back to a samadhi fix or ayahuasca journey. Spiritual bypassing is particularly insidious and nauseating when adopted by folks of privilege. An ivory tower of spiritual pride is constructed smack dab in the middle of the fortress that is white and economic privilege, leading to lack of empathy and action for the less fortunate."
The purpose of therapy is to help the client acknowledge, experience, and bear reality
As Self-realization begins to dawn and we get closer and closer to what we think it will be the fulfillment of our ideas or concepts of realization. When the simplicity of realization finaly dawns our concepts all disolve. But still, individuality plays its roll, the clarity and understanding varies from person to person. And when Realization has become permanently clear, it is so quiet and natural we might still ask ourselves is this really it? I have never felt that I only gained something new but that I lost enough of something that had been in the way.
Since the Self is universal it must be that it is only the loss of the misconceptions that is required to consciously recognize this momentous occurrence.

As opposed to viewing Non-Duality as merely non-separation, we think there's a lot to be seen in viewing it as instead as not-two.
This means identifying only in/as non-separation still makes two. There's the so-called "real" (non-separation) then the so-called "un-real" (separation)
If not-two means going beyond all polarities, or all pairs of opposites, then it points to that which is neither separate nor non-separate. Of course it would deny nothing, and therefore include separation.
Our separate bodies or "unique expressions" are where trauma is held. A.H. Almaas as stated that he's seen many that are stuck on the path of awakening because of... trauma.

Question:
In the Vedanta of Sri Sankaracharya, the principle of the creation of the world has been accepted for the sake of beginners, but for the advanced, the principle of non-creation [ajata] is put forward. What is your view in this matter?
Ramana Maharshi:
"There is no creation, no destruction, no bo***ge, no longing to be freed from bo***ge, no striving to be free [from bo***ge], nor anyone who has attained [freedom from bo***ge]. Know that this is the ultimate truth."
This verse appears in the second chapter [v. 32, vaithathya prakarana] of Gaudapadaโs Karika [a commentary on the Mandukyopanishad]. It means really that there is no creation and no dissolution. There is no bo***ge, no one doing spiritual practices, no one seeking spiritual liberation, and no one who is liberated. One who is established in the Self sees this by his knowledge of reality.
"The absolute is not something other than the consciousness that contemplates it. It is not something outside of the awareness that inquires into it. It is not a product of consciousness or perception, but their very source. It is also not a percept that can be delineated completely. In fact, it is not a percept, even though we seem to have the experience of perceiving it.
It is the ground of all perception, all experience. And this ground is paradoxically not only nonexistent, it is nonexistence. This nonexistence is also mysteriously inseparable from all existence, as its ultimate truth and reality.
Great sages such as Shankara, Nisargadatta Maharaj, and Ramana Maharshi were all devotional. Perhaps we can learn a lesson from that!

"Ramana Maharshi's gift to the world was not that he realized the Self.
Many people have had a deep realization of the Self. Ramana's real gift was that he embodied that realization so thoroughly. It is one thing to realize the Self; it is something else altogether to embody that realization to the extent that there is no gap between inner revelation and its outer expression.
Many have glimpsed the realization of Oneness; few consistently express that realization through their humanness. It is one thing to touch a flame and know it is hot, but quite another to jump into that flame and be consumed by it."

"Whatever my inner experiences are they do not occur outside of personal or family life. All facets of daily life are integral parts of my experience. There is no such thing as, โOh! this is divine or Self-aware but that is not!โ
I see every experience through the eyes of Self-aware understandingโthe eyes of inner divinity and the physical eyesโthey all naturally deliver their specific information at the same time. Self-wakefulness is the field in which I experience everything. If you take regular life, add a pinch of enlightenment, a dash of knowledge and a smidgen of divinity, blend it all together, then you have what I am experiencing."

โGod likes to play hide-and-seek, but because ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐จ๐, he has no one but himself to play with! But he gets over this difficulty by pretending that he is not himself. This is his way of hiding from himself.

In this way he has strange and wonderful adventures, some of which are terrible and frightening. But these are just like bad dreams, for when he wakes up they will disappear.
Now when God plays "hide" and pretends that he is you and I, he does it so well that it takes him a long time to remember where and how he hid himself! But that's the whole fun of it-just what he wanted to do. He doesn't want to find himself too quickly, for that would spoil the game.
That is why it is so difficult for you and me to find out that Pertinent to our times, here are a few notes on some of the glaring problems in the "Neo Advaita" stance from
(Timothy has M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies and was a student of Nisargadatta Maharaj, and Annamalai Swami, among others.
He is the author of Women of Power & Grace: Nine Astonishing, Inspiring Luminaries of Our Time, Women of Spirit: Saints, and Teachers, Healers, Sisterhoods and Goddesses of East & West)
Conway argues that Neo Advaita's ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ ๐จ๐ ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ can lead to indifference toward what he
Because from the Absolute level of reality, such injustices are ๐๐๐๐๐๐ Maya or samsara, Neo Advaitins can come to view political action in the world as absurd and not worth the trouble. For Conway, authentic spirituality requires detachment from the world and at the same time a ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ with the relative world of sentient beings caught in the webs of suffering.
He cites the example of Sri Ramana Maharshi who carefully read the newspapers each day and listened to radio broadcasts out of a

"In the experience of nonduality, it is not as though physical reality were a dream emanating from it - that perception would still be dualistic. When duality is seen through, physical reality is imbued with the essential dimension, and the two become one.
When you look at people, they seem more substantial, and even their bodies appear more physical, in a sense. Every object and person has a concreteness and a definiteness that makes each appear more defined, more present, and more complete, because your experience of them includes the depth of the true existence.
When everything is perceived as the Absolute, each atom, each form, has its depth. Depending upon which dimension you are experiencing, everything you perceive acquires the depth and beauty of that dimension."

Many mistake "Non-Duality" (not two) as merely non-separation of phenomenal form(s). This is certainly a good start, but if we look into various wisdom traditions, we can see that at a deeper level "not two" means "freedom from the pairs of opposites":
Being/Non-Being,
Manifest/Unmanifest,
Prescence/Absence, etc. etc.
The great Greek philosopher Plotinus 205โ270 C.E. was very clear on this view of Non Duality. What he called "One" was not just the "oneness" of manifest form but that which is beyond the manifest and unmanifest altogether.
He taught that there is a supreme, totally transcendent 'One', containing no division, multiplicity or distinction and His One 'cannot be any existing thing', nor is it merely the sum of all things but 'is prior to all existents'. Plotinus identified his One with the concept of Good and the principle of Beauty.
"The One, being ๐๐๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ง-๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ , is the source of the worldโbut not through any act of creation, wilful or otherwise, since activity cannot be ascribed to the unchangeable, immutable One." - Plotinus

"All I know, all I can know, is what I am not. And what I know, is that I am ultimately not even consciousness, awareness, pure being, infinite, knowingness, non-dual, or anything of that sort.
But I also know that it's useless to talk about that. Those who keep clinging to an "absolute" identity such as "I am this non-dual awareness" like a dog to his bone, will never be convinced by any words. Words can only convey what's conceivable, or imagined as conceivable. How could any word or concept bring anyone to the realization of what's inconceivable?
The "Ultimate Reality" cannot be conceptualized, cannot be known, cannot be witnessed, cannot be experienced, but can only be apperceived, inferred, through a deep continuous surrendering and rejecting of all that you are not, of all concepts, of all knowledge, of all definitions, of all attachments, of all clinging, as subtle as they might be.
If there is the slightest clinging remaining in you, you'll miss it. And you should know that all clinging arises out of one single source: the terror of non-existence. You should know that as long as you are avoiding in yourself this deep rooted existential fear and terror, you will keep clinging to some identity, including any "absolute" or "spiritual" identity, as a way of avoidance and rationalization of that repressed fear."

Discussing and sharing resources on what is and isn't "Non Duality."
Advaita, or "Not Two" doesn't necessarily mean One!
Advaita Vedanta has existed for thousands of years. It has only been since the 1990โs that weโve started hearing about โAdvaitaโ without the Vedanta part. In dropping the Vedanta aspect, something was clearly lost.
With that out of the way, historically speaking, Advaita Vedanta was never the only game in town concerning โnot-twoโ anway! Dzogchen, Taosim, Sufism, Buddhism, Shaivism, and Zen (among many other traditions) all have their own unique perspectives to offer on:
Seeing beyond all opposites
ie: beyond existence and non-existence, beyond manifest and unmanifest etc.
The so called โNeo-Advaitaโ concept: โThereโs nobody here, thereโs nothing to doโ has spread far and wide. It is a distortion of the original teachings, and has put the cart before the horse. We feel that itโs essentially a waste of time, so we wonโt be discussing teachers that promote that concept.
In Zen, there is a famous poem thatโs been recited daily for hundreds of years: The Sandokai. It translates as the โHarmony of the Relative and the Absoluteโ. This is more up our alley! It states โto realize the Absolute is not yet enlightenmentโ. So in that, is the well needed cure to โLucknow Diseaseโ or the Neo Advaita trap.
There certainly is the realizing of the โAbsoluteโ and thatโs truly amazing, but just intellectually identifying as that, and disregarding the so called โRelativeโ is ironically dualistic and ainโt enlightenment! As the phrase goes, itโs just โHalf way up the Mountainโ. The other half is obviously to embody and integrate this realization down and into the so called Relative. This normally takes years.
Tony Parsons was wrong, youโre not โalready enlightenedโ!
Feel free to comment and post. We just ask that you donโt post about teachers with outstanding โscandals.โ We also would like teachers to refrain from promote themselves here.
