Hey there! Today we'll talk about Milia, which are very small white bumps that occur on a baby's nose, chin or cheeks. They are common in newborns but can occur at any age.

Milia develop when tiny skin flakes and oily material become trapped in small pockets near the surface of the skin.

They usually disappear on their own in a few weeks or months without treatment. You should not attempt to pop these bumps because that may lead to scarring.

If your baby has a rash that is widespread or associated with any other symptoms, consult your doctor.

Hey there! First in the series, we'll discuss Baby acne (Neonatal acne), which occurs in approximately 20% of infants and
does not appear to run in families.

It usually starts at around 2 or 3 weeks of life.

Your baby can have multiple small red, flesh coloured or white bumps distributed primarily on the forehead, cheeks, and upper chest.

It is thought to be caused by stimulation of oil producing glands by hormones from a baby's mother.

In most cases, no treatment is needed because it usually resolves spontaneously within 4 to 6 months.

See your doctor if your baby has a rash associated with fever, cough or other symptoms that you find concerning.

Hey there! Today we'll talk about Fat necrosis, which occurs when an area of fatty tissue in the breast is damaged, causing a lump or mass to be formed. This can occur after breast surgery, radiation or any other physical trauma to the breast.

Symptoms include:

• Redness or bruising of the overlying skin

• Firm round lump or mass.in the breast

• Usually painless but may be mildly tender

The important thing to note about Fat Necrosis is that it may sometimes cause symptoms similar to those that can be caused by a cancer such as:

• Dimpling of the skin of the breast

• Pulling-in (inversion) of the ni**le

Contact your doctor if you are having any of the above symptoms to find out if breast cancer is the cause.

Hey there! Next in the series we'll talk about the intraductal papilloma, which is a noncancerous (benign) growth in the milk duct of the breast. This condition is most commonly found in middle aged women ( between 40 and 50).

It is usually a wart-like lump found close to the ni**le but can be found elsewhere in the breast. Microscopically, it consists of fibrous tissue and blood vessels.

Symptoms of an intraductal papilloma include:
• Breast lump
• Clear or bloody ni**le discharge from the affected breast
• Breast pain occasionally

A diagnostic mammogram and/or breast ultrasound may be done to identify the cause of the above symptoms. A biopsy may also be needed to confirm that it's a papilloma or to exclude a cancer. Papillomas may be removed by surgery.

Hey there! Today is World Mental Health day, so we're gonna take a short break from the breast cancer series to talk about DEPRESSION.

We tend to use the term loosely, but medically, the diagnosis of depression as a mental disorder is made when certain criteria are fulfilled.

1. One or both of the following conditions must be present for most of the hours of the day, for most days of the week, for at least 2 weeks!

• Persistent sadness or low mood

OR

• Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyed

2. If any of above present, your medical practitioner will ask about associated symptoms such as:

• disturbed sleep (whether difficulty sleeping or prolonged sleep)

• fatigue or low energy

• poor concentration or indecisiveness

• Feelings of worthlessness

• poor or increased appetite/ weight gain

• suicidal thoughts or acts

• agitation or slowing of movements

• guilt or self-blame

Atleast 5 of these symptoms in total, over the time period described above, leads to a diagnosis of depression.

If you or anyone you know has these symptoms, reach out to your doctor for help.

09/10/2020

Hey there! Today we'll talk about Breast cysts which are small sacs inside the breast, filled with fluid and usually not cancerous (benign).

Breast cysts are common in women before menopause, between ages 35 and 50.

You can have one or many breast cysts and they can happen in one or both breasts.

Signs and symptoms of a breast cyst include:

A smooth, easily movable round or oval lump with defined edges.

Ni**le discharge that may be clear, yellow, straw colored or dark brown.

Breast pain or tenderness in the area of the breast lump

Increase in breast lump size and breast tenderness just before your period.

Decrease in breast lump size and resolution of other symptoms after your period.

Breast cysts don't usually require treatment unless a cyst is large and painful. In that case, draining the fluid from a breast cyst can ease symptoms.

The presence of breast cyst can make it difficult to identify new breast lumps, hence women who have breast cysts may not pick up on a developing cancer. Regular self-breast examination, routine checkups and screening are important in ruling out cancerous lumps in the breast.

08/10/2020

Hey there! Today we'll talk about fibrocystic breast changes, which happen when women develop fluid-filled cysts along with areas of thickening (fibrosis) in one or both breasts.

Fibrocystic breast changes occur most often in women between ages 20 to 50.

It is quite common as more than half of women develop fibrocystic breast changes at some point in their lives.

Even though some women may be asymptomatic sign and symptoms of fibrocystic breasts may include:

Breast lumps or areas of thickening that tend to blend into the surrounding breast tissue

Generalized breast pain or tenderness

Breast lumps that fluctuate in size with the menstrual cycle

Green or dark brown nonbloody ni**le discharge that tends to leak without pressure or squeezing

Breast changes that are similar in both breasts

Monthly increase in breast pain or lumpiness from midcycle (ovulation) to just before your period.

06/10/2020

Hey there! First in the breast lump series, we'll talk about the "Breast Mouse"or fibroadenoma, which is the most common cause of non-cancerous breast lumps. They most commonly affect females between ages 15 and 35.

They usually have a well defined shape and feel firm, smooth and rubbery to touch. The firbroadenoma is usually painless and might feel like a marble in your breast, moving easily under your skin when examined.

Fibroadenomas vary in size, and they can enlarge or shrink on their own.

Treatment might include monitoring to detect changes in size or feel, a biopsy to evaluate the lump or surgery for removal if a patient so desires or if they become very large.

The immune system is an important part of human protection against disease.

There are however times when a person's immune system responds inappropriately or in an exaggerated manner, in response to a substance in the environment.

These are called allergic reactions.

This reaction can happen immediately or can be delayed.

Symptoms and signs of an allergic reaction range from mild to severe and can include:

• Itchiness
• Redness of the skin
• Rash or wheals/hives on the skin
• Watery eyes
• Runny nose
• Swelling of the face, mouth or tongue
• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Fainting
• Difficulty breathing

You likely will not have an allergic reaction on your first exposure to a substance, as your body initially recognizes and processes it as an allergen.

Not all allergic reactions are equal. Some can be fatal. Contact your doctor if you have serious symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction.

Good morning peeps. Fi_yu_docta here to talk with you about constipation.

Having fewer than three bowel movements a week is, technically, the definition of constipation.

However, how often you “go” varies widely from person to person.
Whatever your bowel movement pattern is, it’s unique and normal for you – as long as you don’t stray too far from your pattern.

When constipated, your stool may be hard and dry, painful to pass or you may have the sensation that your bowel is not completely empty even after defecation.

Here are a few reasons you may be having difficulty where bowel movement is concerned:

• not eating enough fibre, such as fruit, vegetables and cereals

• not drinking enough fluids

• a change in your routine or lifestyle, such as a change in your eating habits

• ignoring the urge to pass stools

• side effects of certain medications such as those containing morphine-like substances

• anxiety or depression

• Medical conditions such as tumors which cause blockage of the bowels

See your doctor if you are suffering from constipation for advice on lifestyle changes, suitable home remedies, medications or further investigation for more serious causes of constipation.

11/09/2020

Hey there fi_yu_docta here with yet another answer to the interesting question above.

The medical term for this condition is Pseudocyesis, AKA Phantom pregnancy, which is a syndrome mimicking pregnancy in all but one crucial aspect: The mother never gives birth to a baby.

When a woman feels an intense desire to get pregnant, which may be because of infertility, repeat miscarriages, impending menopause, or a desire to get married, her body may produce some pregnancy signs (such as a swollen belly, weight gain, enlarged breasts, milk production, a lack of menstrual periods and even the sensation of fetal movement).

The woman's brain then misinterprets those signals as pregnancy, and triggers the release of hormones (such as estrogen and prolactin) that lead to actual pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness, breast tenderness, urinary frequency among others.

See your doctor if you have signs or symptoms of pregnancy in order to confirm that a fetus is actually present.

Hey there! Fi_yu_docta here and today we'll discuss the much anticipated topic of Male b***s!

The medical term for the development of breast tissue in a Male is gynaecomastia. This occurs when there is an imbalance between males hormones ( AKA androgens such as testosterone) and female hormones (estrogen).

Normal males do have some amount of estrogen circulating in their blood stream, however an imbalance in the favour of estrogen causes the stimulation of glands within the breast tissue to grow.

There are many things which could trigger this imbalance, some physiologic ( as a result of normal body processes) or pathologic ( some disease process is involved). In addition, pathologic causes may be related to the brain, liver, kidneys, te**es or even cancers that secrete substances which affect estrogen production.

Physiologic
Hormone imbalance in:
• Newborn males
• Boys undergoing puberty
• Elderly males

Pathologic causes:
• Genetic illnesses
• Viral infections of the te**es
• Trauma to the te**es
• Pituitary tumors
• Cancers of the lung, stomach, liver or kidney
• Kidney failure
• Liver failure
• Testicular failure
• Malnutrition
• Increased thyroid hormones
• Pollutants from the environment
• Insensitivity to testosterone
• Various drugs eg. Some drugs used in mental illness, anti-cancer medications,
• Alcohol, ma*****na

If you or any Male you know has enlargement of one or both breasts, see your doctor soon to find out what may be the cause.

Last but not least in the headache series we will talk a little about Cluster headaches.

A cluster headache is a relatively rare disorder characterized by recurrent, severe headaches of sudden onset, one side of the head. It is commonly associated with symptoms on the same side of the head that the pain is taking place, including red or teary eye, runny or stuffy nostril, and flushing or sweating of the face.

Symptoms:

Excruciating pain that is generally situated in, behind or around one eye, but may radiate to other areas of your face, head and neck

One-sided pain

Restlessness

Excessive tearing

Redness of your eye on the affected side

Stuffy or runny nose on the affected side

Forehead or facial sweating on the affected side

Pale skin or flushing on your face

Swelling around your eye on the affected side

Drooping eyelid on the affected side

The frequency of attacks ranges from every other day to eight times per day.

Not all headaches are the same. Causes range from psychological stress and viruses to disorders of the brain. Contact your doctor if you are suffering from severe headaches which interfere with activities of your daily life.

08/09/2020

A Tension-type headache is a widespread, mild to moderate pain, tightness or pressure around the head and neck. It is the most common type of headache and is usually described as a feeling of a tight band around the head.

Females are slightly more likely to be affected by this type of headache than males.

Tension type headaches can occur in episodes, whether frequent or infrequent. They may also be chronic, recurring daily and associated with contraction of the muscles of the neck and scalp.

The pain of a tension type headache is:

• Pressing or tightening (not throbbing as in migraine)

• Located mostly around the forehead or the back of the head

• Affects both sides of the head and is usually mild/moderate in intensity

• Not aggravated by physical activity

• Associated with tense or sore muscles of the scalp, neck and/or shoulder.

• Sometimes associated with sensitivity to bright lights or loud noises.

• Not usually associated with nausea and vomiting
• Sometimes associated with difficulty concentrating

Triggers include:
• Psychological Stress
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Over use of pain medication
• Dysfunction of the joint between the bones of the jaw
• Dehydration
• Lack of physical activity
• Skipping meals
• Lack of sleep
• Poor posture

06/09/2020

A migraine is a brain disorder in which certain triggers lead to activation of nerve cells in the brain, which cause blood vessels in the brain to expand and release irritating substances resulting in headache and sometimes visual and sensory disturbances.

90% of those diagnosed with migraine headaches have a family member who was also affected. Women are three times more likely to be affected by migraines as men.

Classic symptoms of a migraine include:

• Throbbing headache, with moderate to severe pain that intensifies with movement or physical activity

• One-sided pain usually in the front or side of the head, but pain may also be felt around the eye or anywhere around the head or neck

• Headache lasts 4–72 hours

• Nausea and vomiting

• Sensitivity to light and sound

• Visual and sensory disturbances ( known as auras). These are commonly described by patients as seeing zig zag lines or feeling tingling, numbness or burning in the hands or feet.

Triggers for migraines include:

• Hormonal changes in women before or during menstrual periods, pregnancy, menopause as well as oral contraceptives.

•Drinks including alcohol, especially wine, and too much caffeine, such as coffee.

• Stress at work or home

• Bright lights and sun glare, loud sounds, strong smells

•  Missing sleep, getting too much sleep or jet lag

• Intense physical exertion, including sexual activity

• Medications like vasodilators, such as nitroglycerin

• Certain foods like aged cheeses, salty and processed foods. So might skipping meals or fasting.

• Food additives like the sweetener aspartame and the preservative monosodium glutamate (MSG), found in many foods.
