Thrombin: An enzyme that converts fibrinogen to fibrin to create a blood clot. It is generated from circulating prothrombin (factor II) by the action of factor Xa (activated factor X). A burst of thrombin generation is a critical step for stable clot formation. The activation of factors VIII and IX drives a robust burst of thrombin; genetic deficiency of factor VIII or factor IX causes hemophilia.
