I thought it would be nice to introduce myself ...

My name is Sarah Flower (yes really that is my birth name!). So, of course, becoming a herbalist was a natural progression for me πŸ˜‚

I trained to be a Medical Herbalist at Middlesex University and qualified in 2003.

I live in Brighton, East Sussex, UK.

I am a single parent with 1 son, who has just turned 17 years old. He is, of course, pretty epic, and I am very proud of him.

You may know me from Brighton Apothecary, which was located in the Open Market. Very sadly, my business partners and I made the difficult decision to close our lovely apothecary last year.

However, as one door closes another opens. I decided to bring my herbal business online and so Rose & Balm was born 🌹

I currently offer herbal consultations online and UK wide.

My discovery of herbal medicine began with recurrent bouts of severe bronchitis that antibiotics could not resolve. A friend lent me a copy of David Hoffman's New Holistic Herbal and I was instantly fascinated. And, the recommended herbs for bronchitis worked!

I love to share information about herbs and their uses. I try to add articles to blog as often as I can.

If you'd like to keep in touch and receive links to my latest blog articles and offers, then please sign up for my newsletter. Link in the Bio.

Rose is a wonderful herb that you can use during perimenopause and after.

🌹 A mild nerve tonic and herbal relaxant. So it helps to make feel calmer whilst helping you become more resilient to stress.

🌹 It is lovely and cooling and helps with hot flushes. Hot flushes are often worse when you are feeling anxious.

🌹 An herb that is ideal to use during perimenopause.

πŸ‘‰ It tastes a little strong on its own but blends very well with lavender and lemon balm to make a delicious herbal tea.

πŸ‘‰ You can find rose as a tincture or use the dried petals to make a tea.

πŸ‘‰ Avoid during pregnancy.

🌹 Shown is Rosa gallica, also known as 'The Apothecary's Rose' 🌹

Have you been wondering if your fatigue is because of perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the time where you hormonal levels change leading up to menopause.

One of the most common symptoms during time is fatigue.

There are some changes that you make to your diet that may be helpful:

πŸ‘‰ Eat protein in every meal. Low blood sugar levels can make you feel very tired. Protein helps to balance your blood sugar levels. Vegan sources of protein include beans, lentils and pulses, and nuts and seeds.

πŸ‘‰ Whole grain foods, such as whole grain bread and brown rice, release their sugars more slowly than refined carbohydrates. This also helps to balance your sugar levels.

πŸ‘‰ Sugary and refined carbohydrates cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. Your body then releases insulin in response leading to sudden reduction in blood sugar levels. This can make you feel extremely tired.

πŸ‘‰ Anxiety or insomnia will only make your fatigue worse. Magnesium deficiency is fairly common and can make you feel more anxious and disrupt sleep. Find magnesium in green leafy vegetables, pulses, and nuts.

πŸ‘‰ Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring oestrogen-like substances in plants. This can help to balance your hormones around menopause. Find in plant foods including beans, lentils, pulses, and nuts and seeds. Linseeds and soya are especially good sources.

πŸ‘‰ To be able to absorb phytoestrogens in the diet you need to have a healthy population of good bacteria in your diet. Ensure that you have plenty of fibre in your diet to help good bacteria thrive.
