Things diet culture tells you will happen if you eat after 8 pm:

❌Late-night calories sit in your system and turn into fat.

Your body does not know what time it is ⏰ 
and theres not some magical switch that gets turned on.

What actually happens if you eat after 8PM:

✅ Your listening to your body and giving it the nourishment it needs.

✅Your preventing your self from waking up famished the next day.

The face I make when someone tells me “but you’re a dietitian you can’t eat things deep fried stuffed with cheese” 🧀

These gluten free rainbow empanadas were delicious from 🌈

If I’m being completely honest at one point in my life going spontaneously to a food festival would have stressed me out 😰

I wouldn’t be able to plan out what I was eating before and then wouldn’t have a “safe lunch”.

After finding food freedom I’m now able to swing by (thanks for opening up in Jersey City!) and be able to live in the moment and enjoy eating with my husband.

There is so much more life to live beyond your meal plan. Nutrition is not an all or nothing approach and I want to teach you that.

Finding food freedom doesn’t mean throwing your health out the window. I’m a health care provider 👩🏻‍⚕️ and would never want that for you.

I’ll be honest sometimes even I don’t have the energy to cook dinner.

This recipe is loaded with veggies and super easy to prepare.

Whip this up in less than 40 minutes total and you are good to go!

Make me: Instant Pot Chicken Ropa Vieja (Serves 6)
Ingredients:
-1 tbsp oil
-1 large onion, diced 
-1 bag shredded carrots
-3 bell peppers thinly sliced
-6 cloves garlic minced
-1 jalapeño optional
-1 can crushed tomatoes (28 oz)
-2 teaspoons cumin
-3 bay leaves
-3 chicken breasts (24 oz)
-salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
- Press sauté button on insta pot.
-sauté all the veggies, turn off once done.
-Add the remainder of the ingredients stir to combine.
-Press the meat stew button on the instant pot and cook for 23 minutes.
-Allow pot to naturally release the pressure for about 10 minuets.
-Remove chicken breasts and shred with two forks. Add the shredded chicken breast back to the Instant Pot.
-Serve with quinoa/rice for a starch and enjoy!

Did you ever a follow a meal plan that told you, fruit has to many carbs and sugar? 

If I see one more diet or lifestyle demonizing fruit I’m going to lose it 🙅🏻‍♀️

Fruits like veggies provide so many important nutrients and its 100% natural.

The fact that diet culture can tell you to eat food created in a lab and demonize fruit still baffles me.

So go ahead and enjoy all the wonderful fruit this summer!

BMI was invited in the 1800’s by a mathematician/astrologer and is complete B.S. as health indicator and here is why:

1️⃣ It wasn’t meant to be used on individuals.
2️⃣ The formula was based solely on white men in the 1800’s.
3️⃣ It can’t tell the difference between things like fat and muscle mass 🏋🏼‍♀️
4️⃣ You can be healthy regardless of your BMI category.

Rather than focusing on your BMI focus on health promoting behaviors like moving your body, eating a rainbow of fruits and veggies, getting adequate sleep and drinking enough water.

It’s finally summer and one of my favorite parts is all the seasonal produce! 🫑🍆🥒🍅

✨ Seasonal fruits and vegetables produced on local farms are fresher.
✨They support local farmers!
✨They taste better!
✨ It’s allowed to ripen on the vine! Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients when they are allowed to ripen naturally on their parent plant.

It’s true the goal of good nutrition isn’t to take away food but actually add more‼️

Before you freak out that I’m a demon dietitian.

I’m not talking about more cookies 🍪 and chips.

The best appetite suppressant is not a cup of tea, water or a stick of gum, but food!!!

Sure these things might “help” temporarily but our bodies are v smart and later on you’ll experience something called primal hunger which results in over eating.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again there are no good or bad foods!

The word “cheat” carries with it negative connotations, implying that you did something wrong or broke a rule. Unless you stole the food you did nothing morally wrong by eating.

Feelings of shame or guilt propagate an unhealthy relationship with food that usually lead to a over eating and then restricting.

When you drop the food labels, you drop the food guilt 🙌🏻

The reason why you get that headache is from hypoglycemia. No hypoglycemia isn’t just for diabetics. This is because your blood sugar drops when you haven’t eaten resulting in a headache. The best thing this is easily preventable from eating regular meals!

Facts:
⚠️It’s not sustainable- there’s a reason why it’s called the DIET INDUSTRY because it’s designed to fail 😩
⚠️avoiding social situations- dieting can cause you to avoid happy hours and dinners with friends 👯‍♀️
⚠️ contributes to insulin resistance- Weight cycling🎢 is one of the biggest factors that contribute to insulin resistance, which can cause type 2 diabetes!
⚠️ decreased body trust- dieting causes you not to trust your body around food 🍕
⚠️ leads to over eating- by depriving yourself your setting your self up for overeating later on.
⚠️ causes future weight gain-95% of diets fail and most people regain all the weight they lost and then some in 1-5 years

Why I Decided to Divorce my Diet👇🏻

For me my food rules started out pretty innocent. Like so many brides. I wanted to be “skinny” for my wedding.

Looking back at it I was a dietitian with super unhealthy habits. Thanks for nothing diet 💔

I was eating minimal calories on weekdays while supporting an active lifestyle of doing CrossFit 5 days a week.

My loving diet made me cutout foods and forced me to avoid certain situations. Happy hours and eating out on weekdays we’re out of the question because I had to go to the gym and have a healthy dinner.

After my wedding I went through a honeymoon phase. No I’m not talking about my husband. I’m talking about with food. Everything was fair game. Then guess what happened. I gained some weight which made me depressed and then dear old diet was there and made me feel safe. Except diets failed me because my metabolism was so messed up 😭

90% of dieters regain the weight they lost and then some after dieting. This is because dieting lowers your base metabolic rate. Meaning you now need less calories to be alive. The science is real and I as a dietitian was not immune to this.

This made me go crazy and do things I shamefully admit like run a mile after I already worked out for the day because I stepped on the scale and then didn’t eat dinner after 🤦🏻‍♀️

I get the diet cycle I’ve been there and it sucks.

All this to say... don’t give up because the other side is worth it.

I still do CrossFit 💪 because I love it. My focus is no longer working out to burn calories but to get as strong as possible.

I’m able to go out for dinner with my husband, get 🍕and not stress out.

I can enjoy dessert 🍪when I want it without a side of guilt and it’s freaking great.

Finding food freedom doesn’t mean throwing your health out the window. I’m a health care provider 👩🏻‍⚕️ and would never want that for you.

Want to know why I decided to ditch dieting forever 👇🏻

If I’m being honest, there wasn’t a day that went by that I’d call “easy”, but I wouldn’t change my journey to letting go of all of my food rules.

For me my food rules started out pretty innocent. Like so many brides. I wanted to be “skinny” for my wedding.

Looking back at it I was a dietitian with super unhealthy habits.

No, I never followed a formal diet just straight up “clean eating”.

But clean isn’t always the healthiest. I was eating minimal calories on weekdays while supporting an active lifestyle of doing CrossFit 5 days a week (incase your wondering I saw zero gains in the gym during this time). I counted my carrots, cut out foods, ate pre portioned products and drove my now husband crazy with our new food regimen at dinner time.

After my wedding I went through a honeymoon phase. No I’m not talking about my husband. I’m talking about with food. Everything was fair game. Then guess what happened. I gained some weight which made me depressed and then tried to start cutting foods out again.

I get the diet cycle I’ve been there and it sucks.

All this to say... don’t give up because the other side is worth it.

I still do CrossFit because I love it. I’m now able to move weights around that I never thought would be possible.

I’m able to go out for dinner with my husband and get rice with my meal and not stress out.

I can enjoy dessert when I want it without a side of guilt and it’s freaking great.

Finding food freedom doesn’t mean throwing your health out the window. I’m a health care provider and would never want that for you.

Being healthy has absolutely nothing to do with how small you can make your body.

Here are the ways dieting is harmful:

👎Dieting lowers your base metabolic rate. Meaning you burn less energy simply to be alive! This is what contributes to post dieting weight gain.

👎Dieting emphasizes that foods are either “good” or “bad". Food is seen as a reward or a punishment. Dieting does not teach you how to actually eat healthy. In addition, dieting rarely focuses on the nutritional value of foods.

👎Unsatisfied hunger from dieting increases mood swings, yes hangry is a real thing.

👎 Dieting can lead to unhealthy changes in body composition, hormonal changes, reduced bone density and menstrual disturbances. That doesn’t sound healthy at all.

Things that are actually healthy:

👍Treating your body with respect.

👍Feeding your body the nutrients it needs for optimal function.

👍Moving your body and strengthening your muscles.

Raise your hand if your meal plan made you use cauliflower as a substitute for EVERYTHING 🙋🏻‍♀️

I mean did anyone ask cauliflower if it wanted to be mashed potatoes, pizza, gnocchi and rice?

When you use a cauliflower substitute for everything it can start to make you actually resent it. True story my husband began to hate cauliflower when I had us on our “wedding diet”.

When you finally let go of following a strict meal plan you can actually start to appreciate veggies again because you don’t feel forced to eat them!

Stop 🛑 what your doing right now and read this!

Maybe you think you “overdid it this weekend”.

Maybe you think you shouldn’t have had that burger and fries.

Maybe you think enjoying that ice cream cone with your kids when it was hot out completely sabotaged your health.

Friendly dietitian here telling you there was nothing wrong with how you ate over the weekend.

This is your reminder to not go on another diet.

FACT: 90% of people regain all the weight they lost or more from dieting.

Things you can do instead:
✨Pay attention to how you feel physically during meal times.
✨Eat when your body tells you to eat and stop when your full.
✨Focus on eating more fruits and vegetables and making your meals as colorful as possible 🌈
✨Move in a way that you find enjoyable 💃🏻

Here’s your reminder to 🛑 relying on the ⏰ telling you when to eat.

Maybe you ate less yesterday, maybe you had an intense workout in the morning, or maybe your just hungrier!

What ever the case is when your hungry eat!

When we wait till a certain time to eat when we are hungry we are ignoring our bodies hunger cues 🙅🏻‍♀️

This usually results in overeating to a point where you are uncomfortably full.
