🧠 TBI Symptoms Are Real — But So Are Your Treatment Options!

If you’ve been struggling with symptoms of TBI (see previous post), you’re not alone and you don’t have to suffer in silence.

Luckily, we have LOTS of treatments for TBI!
💡Here are just a few examples of how we support recovery:
🗣️ Speech therapy can help with brain fog, memory, and trouble concentrating
😵‍💫 Physical therapy supports dizziness and balance issues
😴 Counseling, good sleep hygiene, and medication can improve mood and sleep
🌡️ Diet, movement, and sometimes medication can help with hormone changes and mood dysregulation
Many symptoms can be managed without medication (and that’s always preferred when possible!).For example:
💥 Headaches? You may find relief by identifying and avoiding triggers, using menthol roll-on stick for your temples, wearing a cold cap (can purchase on amazon!) or taking magnesium glycinate (best absorbed formulation) 200-400 mg nightly (always check with your provider or pharmacist first!). If those don’t work, safe medications are available that can reduce pain, improve focus, and improve your quality of life. There is no need to suffer!

✨ The point is: you have options.
TBI recovery is possible and it looks different for everyone.

📩 If you have questions, I’m here to help or guide you toward someone who can.

Did you know that Vitamin D is essential to maintaining important functions of the body? ☀️🦴🧠

While Vitamin D is mostly known for regulating calcium levels and bone integrity, it is also important for neurodevelopment and brain health! 🧬🧠 Deficiency of this crucial vitamin has been linked to various health problems like dementia, depression, diabetes mellitus, autism, and schizophrenia. ⚠️ Correcting low levels can help prevent these consequences. ✅

How can I prevent this, you ask? 🤔
It is hard to find foods naturally containing Vitamin D, with fish 🐟 being the highest. Examples of fortified food/drink include milk 🥛 and cereal 🥣 as many add Vitamin D. In general, adults are advised to take a supplement 💊 containing 800 international units (IU) (20mcg) of Vitamin D daily to maintain a normal Vitamin D level.

While inadequate or ineffective sun exposure is linked to an increased risk of deficiency, exposure to the sun is NOT recommended as a source of Vitamin D for anyone 🚫🌞, due to the potential long-term risks of skin cancer — aka, still wear your sunscreen! 🧴🧢
It is also an easy lab 🧪 your primary care provider can test to see your exact levels!

While no vitamin or mineral has been proven to enhance cognition (thinking) 🧠✨, some can be beneficial for your overall health, including the brain! We prioritize high-quality, third-party tested vitamins and supplements ✅🔬

If you’re exploring trusted Vitamin D supplements, feel free to check out our Linktree via Fullscript 🌐💡 We share these options to support your health journey—not for profit. If you find a better price elsewhere, go for it! 💸 Our goal is simply to educate and help you choose quality products 🙌💚

🧠 TBI isn’t always visible—but the symptoms are very real. Mild and even moderate TBI often doesn’t show up on brain scans and symptoms are frequently mistaken for other conditions or dismissed altogether. Whether the injury happened recently or year or decades ago, TBI can affect everyday life in ways people don’t always expect. If you know someone who’s struggling with these symptoms, it may be worth talking to a provider who understands TBI.

Here are some common symptoms of TBI (even mild cases):
🌀 Brain fog or trouble concentrating (or as I call it “Cog Fog”)
😵‍💫 Headaches and migraines Dizziness or balance issues
🗣️ Memory problems
😴 Sleep disturbances
🌡️ Hormone changes
🥺 Mood swings, anxiety or depression
😤 Increased irritability
🔊 Sensitivity to light or sound
🧍 Fatigue, even with small tasks

✨ The good news?
We have lots of great treatments!

Did you know that approximately 67% of military veterans in the United States have experienced at least one traumatic brain injury (TBI)? Despite making up a large fraction of individuals with TBI, they remain an unfortunately understudied population.

Many people with a TBI have also experienced psychological trauma (the emotional response to events like combat, explosions, or serious accidents). These experiences can have lasting effects on how someone feels, thinks, and reacts. That’s why it’s common to see TBI and PTSD occur together, often from the same event.

If you have loved ones who are veterans or trauma survivors, here are a few gentle ways to support them this Independence Day (adapted from the VA National Center for PTSD). Loud noises like fireworks can be a painful reminder and trigger for those who’ve served, causing real distress:
💙 Let them know your plans ahead of time
💙 Skip the surprise fireworks
💙 Create a quiet space where they can retreat if needed
💙 Check in with empathy

Let’s celebrate freedom and compassion this 4th. Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸

🧠 We can’t believe we missed June—Brain and Alzheimer’s Awareness Month! 🧠

But if there’s one thing we know about brain health… it’s never too late to start the conversation. So we’re making up for it now!

Many of you may not know that I work with patients who’ve experienced mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI)—even months to years after the injury. This includes those with multiple concussions over time.
I primarily support veterans, first responders, and elite athletes, but let’s be clear—TBI can happen to anyone.
TBI affects over 2.8 million Americans each year. Often called “the invisible wound,” its symptoms—like brain fog, mood shifts, memory issues, hormone imbalances, and sleep disturbances—can be life-altering but not always visible to others.

So over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing what we would have in June:
💡 Brain health insights
🛠️ Cognitive support
💬 Honest talk about symptoms, healing, and hope
If this resonates with you or someone you love, know that healing is still possible—no matter how long it’s been. 💜

The Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 in Philadelphia which at that time was the fastest growing city in the colonies. It primarily took care of the poor and homeless suffering from physical and mental illnesses.
Benjamin Franklin himself played a key role in bringing the vision for this hospital to life, and is reported to have said, “I do not remember any of my political maneuvers, the success of which gave me at the time more pleasure.”

Refresher! Do you remember what UVA and UVB stand for?
-
-
They are the two harmful ultraviolet rays the sun omits.
☀️ Ultraviolet A (UVA) is the one responsible for aging the skin
☀️ Ultraviolet B (UVB) is the one responsible for burning the skin

When exposed to both for too long that is when we get damage to our skin that can lead to cancer and premature aging.
-
-
That is why it is so important to pick a sunscreen and/or makeup that protects against both UVA and UVB! Broad spectrum sunscreen is the common term used for a sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB.
-
-
Be sure to check your phone's weather app to get the daily UV Index (when the number is between 4-13 you want to make sure to apply sunscreen, this is when you are most likely to burn in the sun) This can be a very helpful way to know when it is a safe time to be out in the sun.
