Why Your Child Wakes Up Screaming at Night | Night Terrors Explained by a Pediatrician

If your child suddenly wakes up crying, sweating, or screaming in sleep but doesn’t recognize you — it might not be a nightmare. It could be a night terror.

Unlike bad dreams, night terrors happen during deep sleep, usually within the first few hours of bedtime.

Your child may appear awake but is actually unaware and won’t remember it the next day.

🩺 What you can do:

❌Don’t try to wake them — stay calm and ensure they’re safe.
✅ Keep a consistent bedtime routine.
✅ Avoid overtiredness or sleep deprivation.
✅ If it happens often, talk to your pediatrician to rule out underlying causes.

Sleep issues can be stressful, but most night terrors are temporary and harmless. Understanding what’s happening helps you stay calm and support your child.

Think you really know your toddler? Think again!

1️⃣ Sleep matters more than you think – Toddlers need 10–14 hours daily. Skipping naps or late nights can affect mood, growth, and immunity.

2️⃣ Appetite swings are normal – Toddlers eat in bursts. Forcing food can create long-term struggles with healthy eating.

3️⃣ Language and social skills come in bursts – Some days they barely talk, then suddenly they string full sentences together. This is typical!

4️⃣ Big emotions are part of the package – Tantrums aren’t “bad behavior.” They’re a toddler’s way of coping with overwhelming feelings.

5️⃣ Curiosity can be risky – Toddlers explore without understanding danger. Supervision and childproofing save lives.
