The difference between being ‘B12 deficient’ and not having ‘Optimal levels of B12’ is HUGE.
Vitamin b12 is vital for your body.
The NHS advice of a ‘normal’ range of B12 levels vary depending what area of the country you live in. Generally, they will not treat you for a B12 deficiency unless your levels are under 180 (which is
extremely low). There are also GP’s in the UK that will not intervene unless your level is under 120!
HOWEVER...
The majority of the rest of the world classes levels under 500 as low. You can already see a massive variation, when looking at being classed as ‘deficient’
Now in comparison ‘optimal’ levels of B12 are around 750, which again is a very different figure.
B12 is extremely had to absorb from food and table supplement due to your stomach acid.
Basically if your on any medication your body can’t absorb B12 from food or tablets and you only have what you are born with.
Until your dangerously low (under 180) or maybe less- the NHS cannot help you, or they would be having to treat most people. This is not a realistic ask from our NHS and the strains they are already under as we all know.

B12 also desensitises you to morning light, which helps you wake up. Very serious sleep-wake disorders have been successfully treated with Vitamin B12 The effect of administered of B12 is dose-dependent. If you take too little, or it doesn’t get absorbed (and there are lots of barriers to B12 absorption), it won’t help. This is why B12 injections are now becoming the preferred method of treatment as it by-passes your gut and you absorb 100% of the dose.
