Let's talk about neck pain and chiropractic care 🌸

🧠There are many pain generating structures in the neck including muscles, joints and nerves. When these structures are irritated, you can be left with debilitating pain, reduced range of motion, or nagging headaches which keep you from doing many of the things that you love. HOWEVER - there are things we can do to help! 👇🏻

🩺Evaluating, diagnosing and treating neck pain is one of the most common complaints seen by chiropractors.
Chiropractors are able to tease out the cause of your neck pain and help reduce tension throughout the structures of the neck to reduce pain.

💪🏼Adjustments, mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, and exercises are some of the proven effective techniques for neck pain and can all be performed by your chiropractor!

🙅🏻‍♀️There is no reason for you to be suffering with neck pain alone.

🙌🏼Book in to see your chiropractor to determine the cause and get you on the track to reducing your pain and improving your movement!

Being in pain, not being able to participate in activities important to you, and not knowing what to expect can be scary. That's why creating a plan of healing with your practitioner is key! 🔑

A plan of healing is typically created as a partnership between practitioner and patient. It will include an approximate timeline of expected healing, the number of expected treatments and what the treatments will consist of.

Creating a plan of healing during your first visit to a chiropractor or other health professional helps you set realistic expectations and is a fabulous first step in the healing journey.

What do you like about your plan of healing? DM or comment below! 🌸

Feeling sore at the end of a long day at your desk?

Check out these tips to support your spine and feel great 👇🏻

🌸Use a laptop riser.
Two words: Worth It.
I cannot emphasize enough the effects this small change will have on your body. By raising your laptop (or monitor) on a raiser or other hard surface (ie. books), you can reduce the stress you feel in the upper back and neck throughout your workday.

🌸Use an external keyboard and mouse.
Now that you have your laptop raiser, invest in an external keyboard and mouse to allow your shoulders and neck to stay in a comfortable and relaxed position all day. Place your keyboard and mouse at a distance that allows for your wrist to be supported on the tabletop with a slight bed in your elbows.

🌸Add a lumbar support.
An oldie but a goodie. Add a lumbar support cushion or crank up the lumbar support on a modifiable chair until you feel the seat back pressing lightly against your spine. This added support you will keeps your spine in the perfect position which will reduce strain and tension.

🌸Increase your font size.
Are you squinting your eyes or leaning in close to read on your screen? Try zooming in, increasing your default font size, or upgrading your monitor to a larger screen size to ease tension in the neck, upper back, shoulders and even reduce headaches.

🌸Declutter your workspace.
Working in a cluttered space may leave you working in awkward positions for long periods of time. So clear your space, but keep your necessary items (pencils, pens, chargers, and sticky notes) within arms’ reach.

🌸Use a document holder.
Working with hard copies? Looking down at your desk surface puts a lot of stress on your neck and mid back. Invest in a document holder and use it to lift your hard copies to eye level when reading.

Chiropractic and other manual therapies work under the principle of mechanotransduction.

Mechanotransduction is the name of a complex process of changes made at the cellular level from the application of physical/mechanical forces to various tissues. These forces can be applied in many forms including massage techniques, mobilizations (gentle and often rhythmic movements performed by the health care provider), vibration modalities and the traditional chiropractic adjustment. These physical forces stimulate cellular structure and metabolism changes which ultimately help restore optimal tissue function and help reduce pain. 🌸

The pain-spasm cycle is one of many explanations for why pain may continue even after the inciting painful event is resolved. But luckily, this self-perpetuating cycle can be broken by inducing gentle movement to local tissue and other therapies. By doing so, we can increase blood flow to the tissues, prevent ischemia, and therefore prevent further pain and the cycle from continuing.

Let’s talk a bit about chiropractic and pregnancy 🌸

Chiropractic care has been shown to relieve many aches and pains caused by the altered joint loading that occurs during pregnancy. Added weight gain and modified movement patterns throughout pregnancy increase the forces placed on joints and muscles that can cause pain, particularly in the low back and pelvis.

Chiropractic care, has been shown to decrease these symptoms by providing treatments that include:
• patient education and exercise prescription- to help avoid injury(1)
• passive care techniques including manipulations, mobilizations, and soft tissue massage(1)

So, what is chiropractic and what do chiropractors do?

Chiropractic care involves a variety of drug-free, non-invasive treatments including soft tissue massage, mobilizations, spinal manipulation therapy (adjustments) and exercise prescription to name a few. Chiropractors work with their patients to determine the cause of their pain and treat it at its source. While spine care is what chiropractors are most known for, chiropractors are musculoskeletal specialists and can diagnose and treat a range of spine, muscle, and nervous system conditions from head to toe. Some of these conditions include neck and back pain, some types of headaches and migraines, strains / sprains, and arthritis. Chiropractors treat patients from all walks of life including children, those who are pregnant, elderly, and athletes of all levels.
