Reading about I'm struck by how often the phrase, "it's like the colour drained from the world" comes up. Is that your experience? What if you're and the natural colours of the world were always less vivid? Are you prone to depression? As someone who is colourblind and suffered deep depression, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a connection. ( )

I find it very useful to try to maintain some base level of awareness if possible (mindfulness). By doing that, I catch things I do on autopilot that I’d otherwise miss. It’s a skill to be learned, because the tendency to live on autopilot is very strong, but it’s very worthwhile because you learn a tremendous amount about yourself and others.

I was thinking today about the language people use around depression. Specifically, they often feel “stuck” or “trapped”.

While that’s how they feel about life, it’s often also reflected in their physical activity because people with depression struggle with energy levels and even small tasks feel overwhelming. The language may be reflecting either their feelings about life in general, their physical reality, or both.

Perhaps a way out of that situation is to literally move. Perhaps the physical act of getting up and moving will help the body to feel less “stuck” and “trapped”, which will then affect the degree to which the mind interprets their lives as being “stuck” and “trapped”.

There are currently no easy biomarkers for depression.

A diagnosis of depression is made based on mood... how people feel, how their lives are affected, and how long they've felt that way.

But what if we could detect depression on the breath?

We could not only let people know they were depressed and start treatment, but depending on future breath samples, we could know which treatments were actually working!

I've written a short post on Substack referencing a paper where breath differences in Volatile Organic Compounds were see for people with Major Depressive Disorder relative to controls... take a look...

When people start New Year's Resolutions, they're basically hoping that the change of the calendar date will help them make a personality change in themselves.

For example, if their response to stress and anxiety is to over-eat, and they're a few pounds heavier than they'd like to be, their New Year's Resolution may be to lose a certain number of pounds.

But their personality trait... to over-eat when stressed isn't being addressed. So the change of the calendar and a bit of willpower is probably not going to achieve very much.

Only by changing thought patterns of decades will the underlying issue be tackled, and that can't be done until the thoughts and feelings and **reactions to those thoughts and feelings** are recognised.

This is what I try to do every day....

1: Increase the "awareness space" inside myself to inspect thoughts, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes and fully experience all feelings.

(this is mindfulness)

2: Choose which thoughts to accept and which to reject.
3: Choose how to best respond to feelings, not react.

What do you think? Do you do something similar?
