The favelas of Rio de Janeiro are colorful slum areas located on hillsides in all parts of the Brazilian city. The favelas are named after the hill Morro da Favela, which got its name from the favela plant. Brazilian officials refer to urban slums as comunidades or "communities".
Recently, the poor areas of the Brazilian city are no less popular than the world-famous tourist attractions and beaches. Slums have long been a part of Rio, and their history goes back more than a century. During this time, favelas have become not just a type of dwelling, but have grown into a certain level of culture, which has a noticeable impact on the politics and economy of the state. Films are dedicated to favelas, their image is used in computer games, novels are written about the events taking place here and they sing in popular songs. In addition, favelas have given the country many famous personalities – football players, musicians, writers and actors.
