Dr. Ruth Ross gives a Ted Talk on the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Dr Ross is engaged in research into the molecular pharmacology of the cannabinoids and related lipid signalling systems. Her research is directed both toward gaining insight into the deleterious effects of cannabis smoking, the potential for cannabis a medicine and the development of small molecules targeting G protein coupled receptors. Together with medicinal chemists she is engaged in the development of novel small molecule therapeutics for major diseases including chronic pain, addiction, cancer and diabetes.

Dr. Ruth Ross describes what happens in the brain when introduced to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of the primary ingredients in cannabis. This talk was g...

What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological system in the body that helps regulate and balance key bodily functions. Research suggests that the ECS may be a potential therapeutic target in numerous physiological conditions such as: energy balance. appetite stimulation.

The ECS composed of endocannabinoids, which are endogenous lipid-based retrograde neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors, and cannabinoid receptor proteins that are expressed throughout the vertebrate central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.

Cannabinoid receptors, named after cannabis, are found in nearly every organ in the body.

CBD Oil for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The potent anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil make an excellent option for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

A digestive disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, IBD is divided into two main types: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD is estimated to affect 61,000 Australians and is notoriously difficult to treat with no available cure at this time.

Although research looking at the benefits of CBD in this disorder is in its early stages, the findings are quite promising. In particular, studies show that CBD may help improve the symptoms of IBD and even help treat the underlying causes. Here’s what science has to say about using CBD oil for IBD.

How CBD Oil Can Help with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The health benefits of CBD oil are primarily the result of its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This complex system helps maintain a healthy state of balance within our bodies, affecting everything from immunity to cognitive function.

In fact, it even plays an important role in healthy gut function, and dysfunction of the ECS has been linked to multiple digestive disorders, including IBD, IBS, and diverticulitis.
By supporting the ECS, CBD oil can help with many symptoms of IBD and reduce the inflammation and abnormal immune system function that underlies the condition.

History has it that Thailand was introduced to g***a (or kancha) by way of India and was used as a kitchen ingredient, a source of fiber, a relaxant for labourers or women in labour, and holistic medicine for the elderly.

Before it was banned in the 1930s, cannabis was a cash crop upon which domestic economy depended on.

Fast forward to 2020 when medical ma*****na was legalised and more recently in June 2022 when recreational use was decriminalised, Thailand continues to ride the tumultuous journey of cannabis cultivation for the global market.

With the government’s support and it’s people’s entrepreneurial mindset, Thailand sets a brilliant example of an ASEAN nation bringing this blessed plant back to it’s rightful place - in every home and hospital.

Nakhon Phanom, bordering Laos, designated “Cannabis City” by Thailand’s Public Health Minister is one of the earliest districts to have begun cultivating cannabis. The experienced farmers, when not busy tending to their plants, have the potential to host tourists and run educational tours, as part of the communities’ income-generating edu-tourism activity.

The variety of cannabis cultivars, cultivated by generational farmers available in the North East of Thailand is astonishing. These were discovered in just 3 farms in Si Songkhram, which is in the Nakhon Phanom district of Thailand. Many are yet to be identified cultivars.

The governor of this province estimates around 150,000 acres of land in the province is currently being used to cultivate cannabis.

Cannabis use in Thailand has been recorded as far back as the 13th century. The earliest textual evidence of cannabis use comes from a study by French explorers who reported seeing it grown in various parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand.

The plant’s medicinal properties were first recognized by locals during this time and further documented by Chinese herbalists (who also used other plants in their therapies) and European traders who imported it from India or Persia (now Iran) for medical purposes. In fact, due to its wide availability and low cost relative to other drugs, such as o***m, it became one of Thailand’s most common drugs until prohibition began in 1916.

The history of cannabis in Thailand is long and complex. It can show how global influence has affected society over time. The history of cannabis usage in Thailand is also an essential part of Thai culture, and it has played a role in many aspects of life in Thailand, even today. Many Thais are now enjoying cannabis recreationally, and those who do will continue exploring their own subculture further.
