There is an almost electric enchantment in the air â a sense that these ancient stones might conceal secrets that could đżđČđ±đČđłđ¶đ»đČ đŒđđż đđ»đ±đČđżđđđźđ»đ±đ¶đ»đŽ of a long-lost world.
Itâs easy to be captivated by such grandeur. The Egyptian civilization, with its colossal pyramids and arcane hieroglyphs, has always evoked a kind of mystique. Their dynasties embodied worldly power and ancient knowledge. In their heyday, Egyptâs rulers were revered as gods among men, and their sorcerers were masters of secret arts. As modern media now uncovers đșđđđđČđżđ¶đŒđđ đ±đČđČđœ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ»đ undefined under the Great Pyramid, we might feel that same pull of curiosity and wonder that has lured truth-seekers for centuries. đđđ đđ”đČđżđČ đ¶đ đź đ±đźđ»đŽđČđż đ”đČđżđČ. The đȘđŒđżđ± đŒđł đđŒđ± gives us a stark reminder through the story of Moses confronting Pharaoh. Egyptâs power was not only political but spiritual â backed by magicians and mystics who claimed to channel divine forces. When Moses, by Godâs command, performed miracles (like turning his staff into a serpent), Pharaohâs magicians đșđ¶đșđ¶đ°đžđČđ± đđ”đČđđČ đđ¶đŽđ»đ đđ”đżđŒđđŽđ” đđŒđżđ°đČđżđ. Scripture records that âthe magicians of Egypt⊠did in like manner with their enchantmentsâ đ±đČđłđđ¶đ»đŽ đđ”đČ đčđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đđŒđ± with occult imitations. Imagine that scene: the court of Pharaoh đłđ¶đčđčđČđ± đđ¶đđ” đđŒđżđčđ±đčđ đœđŒđșđœ and occult spectacle, as if human enchantments could nullify the power of Jehovah. The Egyptian dynasty, for all its đŽđŒđčđ±đČđ» đđœđčđČđ»đ±đŒđż đźđ»đ± đđČđ°đżđČđ đđ¶đđ±đŒđș, stood in đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđč đżđČđŻđČđčđčđ¶đŒđ» against the true God.
Yet despite the magiciansâ tricks, đđŒđ±âđ đœđŒđđČđż đœđżđČđđźđ¶đčđČđ±. The Lord humiliated Egyptâs gods through the plagues, parted the Red Sea, and delivered His people while Pharaohâs mighty army perished. The lesson is clear: đđŒđżđčđ±đčđ đœđŒđđČđż đźđ»đ± đșđđđđ¶đ°đ¶đđș, đ»đŒ đșđźđđđČđż đ”đŒđ đČđ»đ°đ”đźđ»đđ¶đ»đŽ, đźđżđČ đ»đŒ đșđźđđ°đ” đłđŒđż đđ”đČ đčđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đđŒđ±. The ancient Egyptians may have wielded impressive knowledge of architecture, astronomy, and magic, but đđ”đČđ¶đż đœđżđ¶đ±đČ đźđ»đ± đđŒđżđ°đČđżđ đčđČđ± đđŒ đ°đŒđčđčđźđœđđČ. Their monuments eventually turned to tombs. What remains of that empire is indeed đ°đźđœđđ¶đđźđđ¶đ»đŽ to look upon â đșđźđđđ¶đđČ đœđđżđźđșđ¶đ±đ đźđ»đ± đđđźđđđČđ đ”đźđčđł-đŻđđżđ¶đČđ± đ¶đ» đđźđ»đ± â yet these are monuments to mortality, symbols of a civilization that đ°đŒđđčđ± đ»đŒđ đđźđđČ đ¶đđđČđčđł from desolation.
Today, as we marvel at new discoveries under Gizaâs pyramids, we must remember that đźđ»đ°đ¶đČđ»đ đđŽđđœđâđ đčđČđŽđźđ°đ, đ”đŒđđČđđČđż đŽđżđźđ»đ±, đ°đźđ»đ»đŒđ đŽđ¶đđČ đčđ¶đłđČ đđŒ đŒđđż đđŒđđčđ. In the end, it is đ±đđđ đźđ»đ± đđđŒđ»đČ â fascinating, yes, but đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđčđčđ đčđ¶đłđČđčđČđđ if it leads us away from God. The Pharaohs believed their elaborate tombs and hidden knowledge would secure them immortality; instead, those treasures stayed on earth, and their souls met the God whom they had defied. đĄđŒ đœđđżđźđșđ¶đ±, đ»đŒ đđČđ°đżđČđ đ°đ”đźđșđŻđČđż, đ»đŒ đșđđđđ¶đ°đźđč đżđ¶đđđźđč đ°đŒđđčđ± đđđŻđđđ¶đđđđČ đłđŒđż đŒđŻđČđ±đ¶đČđ»đ°đČ đđŒ đđ”đČ đčđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đđŒđ±.

Why, then, are we so drawn to these đźđ»đ°đ¶đČđ»đ đșđđđđČđżđ¶đČđ? The Apostle Paul warned that đ¶đ» đđ”đČ đčđźđđ đ±đźđđ, people would đđđżđ» đźđđ¶đ±đČ đłđżđŒđș đđŒđđ»đ± đ±đŒđ°đđżđ¶đ»đČ, attracted instead to teachers who cater to their desires â who tell them what they đđźđ»đ to hear. đ§đŒ đđđ¶đ đđ”đČđ¶đż đŒđđ» đ±đČđđ¶đżđČđ, đđ”đČđ đđ¶đčđč đŽđźđđ”đČđż đźđżđŒđđ»đ± đđ”đČđș đź đŽđżđČđźđ đ»đđșđŻđČđż đŒđł đđČđźđ°đ”đČđżđ đđŒ đđźđ đđ”đźđ đđ”đČđ¶đż đ¶đđ°đ”đ¶đ»đŽ đČđźđżđ đđźđ»đ đđŒ đ”đČđźđż, Paul wrote (2 Timothy 4:3, NIV). In other words, they will indulge in đđ¶đ°đžđčđ¶đ»đŽ đŒđł đČđźđżđ â seeking out appealing đ»đČđ đ¶đ±đČđźđ or đČđđŒđđČđżđ¶đ° đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ instead of the solid but sometimes hard truths of the Gospel.
We see this happening all around us. The world runs after the đčđźđđČđđ đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđč đłđźđ±, the newest scintillating theory, the notion that some long-buried secret (be it đźđ»đ°đ¶đČđ»đ đœđđżđźđșđ¶đ±đ, đčđŒđđ đŽđŒđđœđČđčđ, đŒđż đșđđđđ¶đ° đœđ”đ¶đčđŒđđŒđœđ”đ¶đČđ) will finally unveil đ”đ¶đŽđ”đČđż đđżđđđ”. How easy it is to get đ°đźđđŽđ”đ đđœ đ¶đ» đđ”đČ đđ”đżđ¶đčđč đŒđł đđ”đČ đ»đŒđđČđč â to have our ears tickled by the suggestion that something other than Christ can fulfill our spiritual hunger. The idea of a hidden city under the Giza Plateau or a fabled đđźđčđč đŒđł đ„đČđ°đŒđżđ±đ filled with ancient wisdom plays into a longing in the human heart: a longing for đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ đźđ»đ± đœđŒđđČđż, a shortcut to enlightenment.
But đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ đ±đ¶đđŒđżđ°đČđ± đłđżđŒđș đđŒđ±âđ đđżđđđ” can puff us up and lead us astray. The serpent in Eden lured Adam and Eve with a similar tease: đČđźđ, đźđ»đ± đđČ đđ”đźđčđč đŻđČ đźđ đŽđŒđ±đ, đžđ»đŒđđ¶đ»đŽ đŽđŒđŒđ± đźđ»đ± đČđđ¶đč. There is nothing wrong with learning about history or archaeology â indeed, such learning can be enriching â đŻđđ đđ”đČđ» đđ”đČ đœđđżđđđ¶đ đŒđł đđČđ°đżđČđ đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ đđđźđżđđ đđŒ đČđ°đčđ¶đœđđČ đŒđđż đœđđżđđđ¶đ đŒđł đđŒđ±, đđČ đźđżđČ đ¶đ» đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđč đœđČđżđ¶đč. The Gospel of Jesus Christ contains the đłđđčđčđ»đČđđ đŒđł đđżđđđ” found in The Book of Mormon and all that is needed for our salvation. If we find ourselves more excited by an article about pharaohs and hidden chambers than by the đȘđŒđżđ± đŒđł đđŒđ±, it may be time to re-center our hearts.
Paulâs warning echoes through the ages: đđŒđ»âđ đčđČđ đđŒđđż đČđźđżđ đ¶đđ°đ” đłđŒđż đźđ»đđđ”đ¶đ»đŽ đŻđČđđŒđ»đ± đđ”đČ đđ¶đșđœđčđČ, đđźđđ¶đ»đŽ đđżđđđ” đŒđł đđ”đżđ¶đđ. The worldâs intrigue can be intoxicating. It can make the đŒđčđ± đđŒđđœđČđč đđđŒđżđ seem too plain by comparison. We must be vigilant not to let the đżđČđ±đ¶đđ°đŒđđČđżđČđ± đźđ»đ°đ¶đČđ»đ đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ or đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđč đ»đŒđđČđčđđ¶đČđ distract us from the core message of salvation. The Apostle Peter reminds us that đđČ đ”đźđđČ đ»đŒđ đłđŒđčđčđŒđđČđ± đ°đđ»đ»đ¶đ»đŽđčđ đ±đČđđ¶đđČđ± đłđźđŻđčđČđ â our faith rests not on secret myths, but on đČđđČđđ¶đđ»đČđđ đđČđđđ¶đșđŒđ»đ đŒđł đđČđđđ đđ”đżđ¶đđâđ đșđźđ·đČđđđ.

In Him alone is đźđŻđđŒđčđđđČ đđżđđđ” and đđźđđ¶đ»đŽ đœđŒđđČđż. Elder David A. Bednar recently taught about the vital importance of building our lives upon the đżđŒđ°đž đŒđł đđ”đżđ¶đđ. He explained that đđżđđČ đłđźđ¶đđ” is đźđčđđźđđ centered in Jesus and His redemptive mission in a talk given in April 2004 in the Spring General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, "Be Still, and Know That I Am God"

When we speak of đđ”đżđ¶đđ đźđ đŒđđż đ„đŒđ°đž, it means He is the đ¶đșđșđŒđđźđŻđčđČ đŻđČđ±đżđŒđ°đž under our feet â đđ”đČ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ» đđ”đźđ đđ¶đčđč đ»đŒđ đłđźđ¶đč. In the Book of Helaman, the prophet Helaman exhorted his sons (and us) to build on that rock: đ„đČđșđČđșđŻđČđż, đżđČđșđČđșđŻđČđż đđ”đźđ đ¶đ đ¶đ đđœđŒđ» đđ”đČ đżđŒđ°đž đŒđł đŒđđż đ„đČđ±đČđČđșđČđż, đđ”đŒ đ¶đ đđ”đżđ¶đđ, đđ”đČ đŠđŒđ» đŒđł đđŒđ±, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds⊠his shafts in the whirlwind⊠when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you⊠because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a đđđżđČ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ», a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.
If we build on Christ, we đ°đźđ»đ»đŒđ đłđźđčđč. Though the storms of life pound us, though secular winds howl with doubt or sensationalism, we will stand firm.
Elder Bednar used a powerful metaphor from modern construction. In building skyscrapers or reinforcing structures, engineers will often đđ¶đ»đž đźđ»đ°đ”đŒđż đœđ¶đ»đ đźđ»đ± đđđČđČđč đżđŒđ±đ đ±đČđČđœ đ¶đ»đđŒ đŻđČđ±đżđŒđ°đž. These unseen supports fasten the buildingâs foundation to solid rock beneath the loose soil, đČđ»đđđżđ¶đ»đŽ đđđźđŻđ¶đčđ¶đđ
In a similar way, our đđźđ°đżđČđ± đ°đŒđđČđ»đźđ»đđ and ordinances in the gospel of Jesus Christ function like those đźđ»đ°đ”đŒđż đœđ¶đ»đ đźđ»đ± đđđČđČđč đżđŒđ±đ. The sacred covenants and ordinances of the Saviorâs restored gospel can be compared to the anchor pins and steel rods used to connect a building to bedrock. Every time we faithfully receive, review, remember, and renew sacred covenants, our spiritual anchors are secured ever more firmly and steadfastly to the ârđŒđ°đžâ đŒđł đđČđđđ đđ”đżđ¶đđ.
Each prayer, each sacrament taken worthily, each time we go to the temple or remember our covenants, we are đ±đżđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đđ”đŒđđČ đźđ»đ°đ”đŒđżđ đ±đČđČđœđČđż into the Rock. We are đźđłđłđ¶đ
đ¶đ»đŽ our soul to Him.
Think of that contrast: the world is enthralled by the đ±đČđČđœ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ»đ đŒđł đđ”đČ đœđđżđźđșđ¶đ±đ â stone shafts descending into darkness. Impressive, yes, but will those đđđŒđ»đČđ save a single soul? Meanwhile, God invites us to đđ¶đ»đž đŒđđż đŒđđ» đđŒđđčđâ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ» đ±đČđČđœ đ¶đ»đđŒ đđ”đżđ¶đđ, the đđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đ„đŒđ°đž. Those who do so experience what Elder Bednar described as an đđ»đ»đČđż đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđč đđđ¶đčđčđ»đČđđ đŒđł đđ”đČ đđŒđđč. In the midst of lifeâs upheaval, they can heed the Lordâs call: đđČ đđđ¶đčđč, đźđ»đ± đžđ»đŒđ đđ”đźđ đ đźđș đđŒđ±.
In fact, as we bind ourselves to Christ through covenant promises, we become đșđŒđżđČ đŽđżđŒđđ»đ±đČđ±, đżđŒđŒđđČđ±, đČđđđźđŻđčđ¶đđ”đČđ±, đźđ»đ± đđČđđđčđČđ± in our faith
The đŻđđđđ»đČđđ đźđ»đ± đ»đŒđ¶đđČ of the world begin to fade, replaced by a divine calm. đđ đđ”đČ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ» đŒđł đŒđđż đčđ¶đđČđ đ¶đ đŻđđ¶đčđ đđœđŒđ» đđ”đČ đŠđźđđ¶đŒđż, đđČ đźđżđČ đŻđčđČđđđČđ± đđŒ âbđČ đđđ¶đčđčâ â đđŒ đ”đźđđČ đź đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđč đźđđđđżđźđ»đ°đČ đđ”đźđ đđŒđ± đ¶đ đŒđđż đđČđźđđČđ»đčđ đđźđđ”đČđżâŠ đźđ»đ± đđČđđđ đđ”đżđ¶đđ đ¶đ đŒđđż đŠđźđđ¶đŒđż.âBe Still, and Know That I Am God
There is a đœđżđŒđłđŒđđ»đ± đđđ¶đčđčđ»đČđđ đźđ»đ± đ°đčđźđżđ¶đđ that comes from being đżđŒđŒđđČđ± đ¶đ» đđ”đżđ¶đđ, a stillness that no worldly excitement can counterfeit. It is the peace of đžđ»đŒđđ¶đ»đŽ where we stand, of feeling our feet planted on solid rock.

Tragically, when the đŠđŒđđżđ°đČ đŒđł đ§đżđđđ” đđ¶đșđđČđčđł came into the world, many people missed it. The Gospel of John records the poignant irony: đđČ đ°đźđșđČ đđ»đđŒ đđ¶đ đŒđđ», đźđ»đ± đđ¶đ đŒđđ» đżđČđ°đČđ¶đđČđ± đđ¶đș đ»đŒđ
The đđČđđ¶đđ” đœđČđŒđœđčđČ, steeped in scripture and awaiting a Messiah, in large part đżđČđ·đČđ°đđČđ± đđČđđđ because He did not fit their expectations. They were looking for a conquering king to đČđ»đđ”đżđŒđ»đČ, not a lowly Savior to crucify. Many of đđ¶đ đŒđđ» were too in love with their own ideas, their status, or the đŽđčđŒđżđ đŒđł đđ”đČ đđŒđżđčđ±, and they failed to recognize the very đ„đŒđ°đž đŒđł đŠđźđčđđźđđ¶đŒđ» standing before them.
This is a sobering warning for us. We who claim to be đđ¶đ đŒđđ» today â Christians, believers, members of His Church â can also be at risk of đżđČđ°đČđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đđ¶đș đ»đŒđ if our hearts are elsewhere. If I am so fixated on worldly intrigue (even something as intriguing as pharaonic mysteries) that I đŒđđČđżđčđŒđŒđž đđ”đČ đŠđźđđ¶đŒđżâđ đ±đźđ¶đčđ đœđżđČđđČđ»đ°đČ, am I not doing what those ancient people did? Jesus Christ knocks on the door of our hearts, offering Himself as the đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ» we need. How sorrowful if we were to be so busy peering into the past, or gazing at worldly splendors, that we đ±đŒđ»âđ đŒđœđČđ» đđŒ đđ¶đș!
Jesus once lamented over Jerusalem, saying, đ§đ”đŒđ đžđ»đČđđČđđ đ»đŒđ đđ”đČ đđ¶đșđČ đŒđł đđ”đ đđ¶đđ¶đđźđđ¶đŒđ». Through His Spirit, through the scriptures, through living prophets and personal revelation, through the very man or woman that stands battered and broken before you testifying of His Truth, He offers đčđ¶đđ¶đ»đŽ đđźđđČđż đźđ»đ± đđ”đČ đŻđżđČđźđ± đŒđł đčđ¶đłđČ â truth that satisfies eternally. Yet if our ears are attuned only to the đđ¶đżđČđ» đđŒđ»đŽ đŒđł đČđđŒđđČđżđ¶đ° đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ or if our eyes are glued to the đŽđčđ¶đđđČđż đŒđł đđŒđżđčđ±đčđ đđŒđ»đ±đČđżđ, we might fail to receive Him. The pyramid of Giza will not judge us at the last day; đđČđđđ đđ”đżđ¶đđ đđ¶đčđč. And He will ask if we knew Him, if we built upon Him, if we received Him with full purpose of heart.
đ„đČđșđČđșđŻđČđż đđŒđâđ đȘđ¶đłđČ: đĄđŒ đđŒđŒđžđ¶đ»đŽ đđźđ°đž
Jesus gave a short but powerful caution in the Gospel of Luke: đ„đČđșđČđșđŻđČđż đđŒđâđ đđ¶đłđČ (Luke 17:32). đđŒđâđ đđ¶đłđČ, as they fled the destruction of đŠđŒđ±đŒđș, made the fatal error of turning back with longing to what sheâd left behind. The Old Testament recounts that she đčđŒđŒđžđČđ± đŻđźđ°đžâŠ đźđ»đ± đđ”đČ đŻđČđ°đźđșđČ đź đœđ¶đčđčđźđż đŒđł đđźđčđ.Genesis 19:26

Lotâs wife stands as a symbol for anyone who sets out to follow God but keeps đŽđčđźđ»đ°đ¶đ»đŽ đŒđđČđż đđ”đČ đđ”đŒđđčđ±đČđż at the worldâs temptations. Are we đčđŒđŒđžđ¶đ»đŽ đŻđźđ°đž đđŒ đđŽđđœđ or holding onto judgements of the past or false pride in our Truths resistant to the offering up of the testimony's sent unto us by the very Father you've prayed to? When we should be pressing forward to the Promised Land? The Israelites in the desert often murmured that they missed the âleeks and onionsâ of Egypt, forgetting the đđčđźđđČđżđ God freed them from. Likewise, after setting our hands to the plow in Christâs kingdom, we cannot afford to look back wistfully at the đđŒđżđčđ± đđČ đčđČđłđ đŻđČđ”đ¶đ»đ±. If God has called us out of spiritual Babylon or spiritual Egypt, then đđđżđ»đ¶đ»đŽ đŻđźđ°đž â even just in our affections â can cause us to đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđčđčđ đ°đźđčđ°đ¶đłđ. We become stuck, unable to move forward, like Lotâs wife literally stuck as a salt pillar.
In our context today, đčđŒđŒđžđ¶đ»đŽ đŻđźđ°đž might mean đđČđźđżđ»đ¶đ»đŽ đłđŒđż đŒđčđ± đđ¶đ»đ, đŒđčđ± đ”đźđŻđ¶đđ, đŒđż đđŒđżđčđ±đčđ đđ”đżđ¶đčđčđ when we have covenanted to move upward on the covenant path. It could also mean đŽđčđŒđżđ¶đłđđ¶đ»đŽ đœđźđđ đ°đ¶đđ¶đčđ¶đđźđđ¶đŒđ»đ đŒđż đ¶đ±đČđŒđčđŒđŽđ¶đČđ in a way that diminishes our devotion to God. Even failing to see Perfected Truths revealed for our day. If we do so, we risk turning into đđœđ¶đżđ¶đđđźđčđčđ đ±đČđđŒđčđźđđČ đœđ¶đčđčđźđżđ â intact on the outside perhaps, but inwardly empty and lifeless, âsaltâ that has lost its savor. Thousands of years ago, the Lord gave a prophetic dream to a man named đđČđ”đ¶, recorded in the Book of Mormon. In that dream, people journeyed toward the đ§đżđČđČ đŒđł đđ¶đłđČ (symbolic of Godâs love and eternal life) along a strait and narrow path. But along that path arose a đșđ¶đđ đŒđł đ±đźđżđžđ»đČđđ⊠đźđ» đČđ
đ°đČđČđ±đ¶đ»đŽđčđ đŽđżđČđźđ đșđ¶đđ đŒđł đ±đźđżđžđ»đČđđ, causing many travelers to lose their way and become lost ([1 Nephi 8]
The only ones who reached the Tree were those who âđœđżđČđđđČđ± đłđŒđżđđźđżđ± đđ”đżđŒđđŽđ” đđ”đČ đșđ¶đđ đŒđł đ±đźđżđžđ»đČđđ, đ°đčđ¶đ»đŽđ¶đ»đŽ đđŒ đđ”đČ đżđŒđ± đŒđł đ¶đżđŒđ» (the word of God) ([1 Nephi 8]
That đ¶đżđŒđ» đżđŒđ± was their guide when worldly eyes failed; it cut through confusion and led them to safety.
Brothers and sisters, consider the world we live in today. We truly live in đđđżđŻđđčđČđ»đ đđ¶đșđČđ, an age of information overload, constant media buzz, and viral fads. If ever there were a đșđ¶đđ đŒđł đ±đźđżđžđ»đČđđ in our day, it is this cloud of ceaseless đșđČđ±đ¶đź đ»đŒđ¶đđČ đźđ»đ± đđČđ»đđźđđ¶đŒđ»đźđčđ¶đđș that can so easily obscure our view of God. The recent obsession with Egyptian archaeology is just one example. Tomorrow it might be a new conspiracy theory, or a charismatic false teacher performing đŽđżđČđźđ đđ¶đŽđ»đ đźđ»đ± đđŒđ»đ±đČđżđ. Jesus Christ Himself warned that in the last days even deceivers would come, đ¶đ»đđŒđșđđ°đ” đđ”đźđ, đ¶đł đ¶đ đđČđżđČ đœđŒđđđ¶đŻđčđČ, đđ”đČđ đđ”đźđčđč đ±đČđ°đČđ¶đđČ đđ”đČ đđČđżđ đČđčđČđ°đ. ([Matthew 24:24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible.]
In other words, the deception will be so sophisticated and appealing that đČđđČđ» đłđźđ¶đđ”đłđđč đŻđČđčđ¶đČđđČđżđ đ°đŒđđčđ± đŻđČ đđđźđđČđ± â đ¶đł those believers are not firmly rooted in truth.
Think about it: Satan doesnât usually tempt devoted Christians with blatant evil like worshipping Pharaoh or bowing to a golden idol. Heâs far sneakier. He sends a đșđ¶đđ đŒđł đ¶đ»đđżđ¶đŽđđ¶đ»đŽ đ¶đ±đČđźđ, half-truths, and glossy distractions. He loves to get us fascinated by đźđ»đđđ”đ¶đ»đŽ đČđ
đ°đČđœđ đđ”đżđ¶đđ â even things that seem grand or enlightening. If the devil can get an upright person to spend all their energy chasing, say, proof of ancient extraterrestrials or secret codes in the pyramids (or even just obsessing over news and entertainment), that person might đđźđ»đ±đČđż đŒđłđł đ¶đ»đđŒ đđ”đČ đ±đźđżđžđ»đČđđ, losing hold of the iron rod of Godâs word. The adversary gleefully uses the đșđČđ±đ¶đź đźđ»đ± đđ”đČ đ¶đ»đđČđżđ»đČđ as his fog machine, billowing out endless speculations, controversies, and pleasures to cloud the minds and hearts of people. How many souls have gotten lost in that mist, their attention swallowed by YouTube rabbit holes, their faith dimmed by the constant drizzle of doubt and distraction?
The grandeur of ancient Egypt, as presented in documentaries and articles, can serve as đŒđ»đČ đŒđł đđ”đŒđđČ đșđ¶đđđ. Itâs not that archaeology or history are evil â far from it. Itâs that the đŽđčđŒđżđ¶đłđ¶đ°đźđđ¶đŒđ» of human antiquity can become a tool to đ±đČđđ”đżđŒđ»đČ đđŒđ± đ¶đ» đŒđđż đșđ¶đ»đ±đ. We see it when commentators gush over the engineering marvels of the pyramids (and indeed they are astonishing) but then imply, ancient man was so advanced, who needs the âmythsâ of religion? Or when a discovery is hyped as âchallenging biblical history,â causing some to question their faith. Or when people begin to mix đźđ»đ°đ¶đČđ»đ đđŽđđœđđ¶đźđ» đșđđđđ¶đ°đ¶đđș with their spiritual practices, thinking they are finding deeper truth, but in reality walking into spiritual dead-ends. All of this is like that đșđ¶đđ đ¶đ» đđČđ”đ¶âđ đ±đżđČđźđș â it *looks* intriguing, but if you step into it without holding fast to the iron rod, you will quickly lose your bearings.
đđđČđ» đđ”đČ đČđčđČđ°đ can be deceived if they pridefully assume they cannot be. We must đźđ°đđ¶đđČđčđ đźđ»đ°đ”đŒđż đŒđđżđđČđčđđČđ đđŒ đđ”đżđ¶đđ to safely navigate todayâs fog. We have the iron rod within our grasp â the scriptures, the words of living prophets, the Holy Spiritâs whisperings. đȘđČ đșđđđ đ°đčđ¶đ»đŽ đđŒ đđ”đČđș. Hold them with the same urgency and firmness as if you were in a smoke-filled hallway searching for an exit. There is safety and clarity in the iron rod. It cuts through confusion and leads us back to the presence of God. With one hand on that rod and our eyes toward the Savior, we can pass through any mist unharmed. Without it, even an đ”đŒđ»đČđđ đđČđČđžđČđż can be led astray by the sheer volume of persuasive voices in the great and spacious building of the world.

My dear friends, in a world of shifting fascinations and đđ”đ¶đłđđ¶đ»đŽ đđźđ»đ±đ, we must deliberately choose to root our lives in the đ„đŒđ°đž đŒđł đŒđđż đ„đČđ±đČđșđœđđ¶đŒđ», đđČđđđ đđ”đżđ¶đđ. The pyramids of Egypt have stood for millennia upon their massive stone foundations, yet even those đđ¶đčđč đ»đŒđ đČđ»đ±đđżđČ đČđđČđżđ»đźđčđčđ. Only one foundation is đđđżđČ đźđ»đ± đČđđČđżđčđźđđđ¶đ»đŽ â the foundation we build upon đđ”đČ đŠđŒđ» đŒđł đđŒđ±. We cannot build our faith on the đđźđ»đ±đ đŒđł đđŒđżđčđ±đčđ đ¶đ»đđżđ¶đŽđđČ, because no matter how exciting or convincing they seem today, they will shift and crumble tomorrow. New theories will replace old ones; todayâs trend will become yesterdayâs trivia. đ§đżđđđ” đ±đŒđČđ đ»đŒđ đ°đ”đźđ»đŽđČ. đđŒđż đŒđđ”đČđż đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ» đ°đźđ» đ»đŒ đșđźđ» đčđźđ đđ”đźđ» đđ”đźđ đ¶đ đčđźđ¶đ±, đđ”đ¶đ°đ” đ¶đ đđČđđđ đđ”đżđ¶đđ (1 Corinthians 3:11). Let us truly đœđčđźđ»đ đŒđđż đđŒđđčđ in Christ. How do we do this? We do it by đœđżđźđđČđż đźđ»đ± đđ°đżđ¶đœđđđżđČ đđđđ±đ that isnât just casual, but heartfelt and constant. We do it by partaking of the đđźđ°đżđźđșđČđ»đ with real intent, renewing our promises to serve Him. We do it by worshipping in the temple, where covenants literally bind us to the Lord. We do it by following the living prophets and apostles, who guide us safely through modern mists. We do it by practicing charity and holiness in our daily life â in other words, by living as đđżđđČ đ±đ¶đđ°đ¶đœđčđČđ who hear đźđ»đ± đ±đŒ the words of Christ.
Christ invites us, đđŒđșđČ đđ»đđŒ đșđČ⊠đŻđđ¶đčđ± đđœđŒđ» đșđ đżđŒđ°đž. Will we come? Will we build? Or will we, like the rich young ruler, walk away sorrowing because we canât let go of something else? I testify that đ»đŒ đœđđżđźđșđ¶đ±, đ»đŒ đ”đ¶đ±đ±đČđ» đžđ»đŒđđčđČđ±đŽđČ, đ»đŒ đđŒđżđčđ±đčđ đźđ°đ°đčđźđ¶đș can compare to đžđ»đŒđđ¶đ»đŽ đđ”đČ đŠđźđđ¶đŒđż. When we are đŻđđ¶đčđ đłđ¶đżđșđčđ đŒđ» đđ¶đș, we feel an đđ»đđ”đźđžđČđźđŻđčđČ đœđČđźđ°đČ, even if the world around us is quaking. đȘđ”đČđ» đđČ đźđżđČ đźđ»đ°đ”đŒđżđČđ± đđŒ đđ¶đș, the hysterias and fads of media neither unsettle us nor seduce us. We see them for what they are â interesting perhaps, but not life-giving. Our hearts, being filled with the love of God, no longer hunger for the đœđŒđŒđż đđđŻđđđ¶đđđđČđ the world offers.
Consider the image of a đčđ¶đŽđ”đđ”đŒđđđČ built on solid rock, waves crashing against it in a storm. That lighthouse stands secure because of its foundation. Jesus Christ is our lighthouse and our foundation in one. If we are fused to Him, we shine with His light and remain steadfast amid storms. But if we build on any other foundation â be it the đ°đđčđđđżđźđč đŽđčđźđșđŒđđż đŒđł đźđ» đźđ»đ°đ¶đČđ»đ đČđșđœđ¶đżđČ or the promises of modern intellectualism or the pursuit of wealth and status â we build on đđźđ»đ±. And đđ”đČđ» đđ”đČ đżđźđ¶đ» đ±đČđđ°đČđ»đ±đ, đźđ»đ± đđ”đČ đłđčđŒđŒđ±đ đ°đŒđșđČ, đźđ»đ± đđ”đČ đđ¶đ»đ±đ đŻđčđŒđ đźđ»đ± đŻđČđźđ đđœđŒđ» đđ”đźđ đ”đŒđđđČ, đ¶đ đđ¶đčđč đłđźđčđč, đźđ»đ± đŽđżđČđźđ đđ¶đčđč đŻđČ đđ”đČ đłđźđčđč đŒđł đ¶đ (see Matthew 7:27). đđżđČđźđ đđ¶đčđč đŻđČ đđ”đČ đłđźđčđč â what tragic words, and how many once-faithful souls have we seen fall because their foundation shifted from Christ to something else?
In my work and life, I have seen the importance of đłđ¶đżđș đłđŒđŒđđ¶đ»đŽ đ¶đ» đđ¶đșđČđ đŒđł đ°đ”đźđŒđ. I know that in a crisis you fall to the level of your training and foundation. Spiritually, it is the same: đđČ đđ¶đčđč đłđźđčđč đđŒ đđ”đČ đčđČđđČđč đŒđł đŒđđż đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ». If our foundation is đđ”đżđ¶đđ, we will not fall đŻđČđčđŒđ hope, below faith, below divine help â for He upholds us. If our foundation is anything less, when the pressure is on we may crumble. Now is the time to inspect our own spiritual foundations. Now is the time to dig deep, đđŒ đżđČđ¶đ»đłđŒđżđ°đČ đŒđđż đŻđźđđČ đ¶đ» đđ”đżđ¶đđ, before heavier trials come.
Let the đčđČđŽđźđ°đ đŒđł đđŽđđœđ serve as a caution, not a distraction. Yes, the pyramids are wonders of the world â but they are also đđŒđșđŻđ, resting on a foundation of death. In contrast, the đČđșđœđđ đđŒđșđŻ đŒđł đđ”đżđ¶đđ stands as a testimony of đčđ¶đłđČ đźđ»đ± đżđČđđđżđżđČđ°đđ¶đŒđ», resting on the power of an infinite Atonement. One foundation leads to a đ±đČđźđ± đČđ»đ±; the other to đČđđČđżđ»đźđč đčđ¶đłđČ. Will we choose the living Christ over the dead pharaohs? Will we choose the truth of the Gospel over the titillating lie that salvation or enlightenment can be found đđŒđșđČ đŒđđ”đČđż đđźđ?
I add my voice as a witness: đđČđđđ đ¶đ đđ”đČ đđ”đżđ¶đđ, đđ”đČ đđđżđČ đłđŒđđ»đ±đźđđ¶đŒđ» đźđ»đ± đ°đ”đ¶đČđł đ°đŒđżđ»đČđżđđđŒđ»đČ đŒđł đŒđđż đłđźđ¶đđ”. He loves us with an everlasting love.
