Flashback to last month's Stanford Neurodiversity Summit where our Executive Medical Director Dr. Josh Feder was a keynote speaker.

His topic, "Bringing Developmental Relationship-Based Autism Care to All," focused on what it takes to connect in a meaningful way with autistics.

He shared 3 important steps to do just that: Wait - Join - Build

⌚ Wait: Pause and observe what someone is doing through the eyes of the person you want to connect with

👋 Join: Participate in what the other person is doing

➕ Build: Add to whatever they're doing

According to Dr. Feder, this interaction becomes an iterative process that allows for meaningful connection and is the foundation for building relationships.

October is ADHD Awareness Month! Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism can present similar characteristics, despite being separate conditions. Autism is a neurodevelopmental diagnosis that can influence language capabilities, behavior, social/emotional interactions and learning. ADHD impacts things like how the brain manages attention and impulse control. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial in ensuring your child gets the support they need to grow and thrive!

*Note: there are cases where a child can receive a dual diagnosis of both ADHD and autism called AuDHD. Click on the 🔗 below to head over to our blog for more info on AuDHD.

Did you know October is ADHD Awareness Month? ADHD, or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, most often affects a person's ability to concentrate and contributes to increased energy or overexcitement, and impulsivity. In young children, ADHD may also include difficulty processing and responding to emotions. Regardless the severity and symptoms, ADHD looks different for everyone, so this month we honor and bring awareness to it.
Although Positive Development primarily works with autistic children, we also gladly welcome and work with many individuals that have dual diagnoses, such as AuDHD and more.

We couldn't have asked for a better day to celebrate our NEW Tulsa-based developmental therapy center. 🥳

We recently held a Grand Opening celebration welcoming the Tulsa community and our local families to join us for an afternoon of ice cream and sensory-friendly activities.

To quote our Clinical Director, Alex Smith, who we couldn't have done this event without: "It was a huge success!"

We're so proud to open this new center in Tulsa and to be another option for families looking for neurodiversity-affirming, relationship-based autism care as well as occupational and speech therapy support.

A HUGE thank you to all the families who attended, community partners that came to support us, to FOX23 News and News On 6 for the media coverage, and to the local Tulsa PD team and the team members who flew in to help with all the planning and activities before and on the day of the event.

We appreciate you! 💜

Children L💙VE to play - not only is it fun and creative but it also prompts degrees of learning that are entirely specific to a child's processing, interests and imagination.

In the words of Stephanie Jones (professor of early childhood development at Harvard):

“In addition to promoting curiosity, exploration and creativity, play provides children with the opportunity to practice important executive function and self-regulation skills like paying attention, inhibiting their impulses and remembering and updating information."

The algorithm to children learning is pretty simple: allow space and time for open exploration through play!

An important element of autism acceptance and awareness is: ⭐ education ⭐ . Educating neurotypical children about autism is vital for creating a culture of acceptance and inclusion. Children who understand that differences in how people's brains work should be celebrated, tend to develop empathy and compassion for others.

By learning about autism and diversity, children become better equipped to welcome differences, encourage participation, and ensure that all children feel valued and included. These efforts not only strengthen connection with others but also increase degrees of kindness and protection of others. Autism education is key 🔑

M-e-l-t-d-o-w-n-s. They can be tough for everyone involved, but there are common signs a child with autism might show before being overwhelmed by strong emotions or feelings. Recognizing indicators before a meltdown gives time for regulation practices or conversation, helping your child feel safe, understood and loved.

We're shining a light on the significance of understanding all forms of communication, including non-speaking. Communication allows each individual to display feelings, emotions, needs, opinions, and therefore, embody many different forms: verbal, sign language, flash cards or photos, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices and more! Here is a reminder to accept and value communication preferences that may differ from your own — we all have unique ways of expressing ourselves!
