LARYNGITIS
/ˌlær.ɪnˈdʒaɪ.tɪs/
Inflammation of the voice box (larynx) that causes hoarseness or even temporary voice loss.
Ever lost your voice right before an important meeting, performance, or night out? Inside your larynx are vocal cords that open, close, and vibrate to produce sound. But when they swell from overuse, irritation, or infection, the vibrations distort, and your voice suffers. Most cases are short-lived, often caused by viral infections like the common cold, and resolve within a week or two. Chronic laryngitis, however, can linger for over three weeks, fuelled by smoking, acid reflux, allergens, or years of vocal strain like singers, teachers, or sports coaches.
Hoarseness, a dry or sore throat, a persistent cough — these are the tell-tale signs. Most people bounce back with rest, hydration, and avoiding voice strain, but lasting symptoms or warning signs like difficulty breathing, swallowing, or coughing blood call for prompt medical care.
You can reduce your risk by keeping your throat hydrated, steering clear of smoke, limiting alcohol and caffeine, managing reflux, eating vitamin-rich foods, and protecting your voice from overuse. Regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with those who are sick can help prevent viral triggers too.
Your voice tells your story, so don’t let laryngitis steal the mic.
