A recent on-air food allergy scare on The View has sparked important conversations about food safety and communication behind the scenes.
Sunny Hostin experienced a serious allergic reaction after unknowingly eating a dish containing walnuts, an ingredient she’s severely allergic to. Former cohost Debbie Matenopoulos, who brought the dish as part of a cookbook segment, said she reviewed all recipes with producers and was told no one had food allergies. Sunny, not wanting to draw attention away from the segment, wrote a note to a cohost instead of speaking up.
This moment is a powerful reminder: food allergies are a serious medical conditions and must be taken into account. No one should ever feel embarrassed or hesitant to speak up about their needs, especially when their health is on the line.
Thankfully, Sunny received immediate medical care, including epinephrine, and is doing well. But this incident underscores how crucial it is to take food allergies seriously, ask questions, and create safer spaces, on camera and off. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3ZZAtfk

Navigating a mustard allergy can be incredibly challenging—this sneaky ingredient hides in everything from salad dressings and marinades to spice blends and processed foods.

Mustard allergies have been garnering more attention globally, even though in the US mustard is still not a part of the Top 9 Allergen list.

Mustard belongs to the Brassicaceae family, and due to cross-reactivity, some individuals may also react to related foods such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, turnips, radish, or even rapeseed (canola).

Both brown and yellow mustard seeds contain unique proteins that can trigger allergic reactions. Even trace amounts may cause a reaction, and in severe cases, lead to anaphylaxis.

Some people experience oral allergy syndrome (OAS) after consuming mustard, where symptoms like itching or tingling occur only in the mouth and throat.

Mustard may not always appear simply as "mustard" on food labels. Look for alternate names that include:
▪️ Brassica juncea
▪️ Mustard seed
▪️ Mustard powder or flour
▪️ Dijon mustard
▪️ Yellow mustard
▪️ Prepared mustard
▪️ Mustard oil

Even if you don't see mustard listed outright, there are several items it could be hidden in, some of which include:
▪️ Condiments (like ketchup & BBQ sauce)
▪️ Salad dressings and dips
▪️ Spice mixes & seasoning blends
▪️ Curries
▪️ Chutneys
▪️ Pickles
▪️ Dehydrated soups
▪️ Processed meats (ie sausage, salami, and some fast-food items)
▪️ Potato salad
▪️ Ready-to-eat foods

Do you or someone you know have a mustard allergy? Any advice?

BREAKING: In a major victory for public health, a federal judge reversed the National Institute of Health's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that NIH had terminated through an ideological purge.

In February, the NIH began a reckless purge of federal grants, halting application processes midstream, and stripping funding opportunities from its website. Hundreds of research projects — many of which have been underway for years, representing thousands of hours of work and billions of dollars in investment — were abruptly cancelled without a reasonable explanation.

On April 2, the ACLU, ACLU of Massachusetts, Protect Democracy and CSPI filed a lawsuit challenging the abrupt cancellations on behalf of individual researchers, along with the American Public Health Association, UAW International Union, and Ibis Reproductive Health.

CSPI President Dr. Peter Lurie, who was a plaintiff in this case, said that the ruling "thankfully starts researchers getting back to work delivering progress on cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, HIV, and other health challenges facing our diverse population."
