WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?
Many people have a wrong definition and understanding of what mental health is all about.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is "a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to his or her community."
In other words, mental health is not just merely about the absence of mental illness but about feeling good and being able to function well in life.
You can't just term yourself as being mentally healthy simply because you aren't roaming the street or feeding on dirt like an insane man or woman.
WHO clearly stated that even if you're unable to cope with the ordinary stress of life, you're mentally unhealthy and imbalanced. Sounds strange right? But that's the truth.
Mental imbalance leads to depression which in the worst case can lead to su***de. There is a need to take care of your mental health as much as you can.
Factors That Contribute to Mental Health:
Several factors can affect mental health. Some of these include:
1. Genetics: Mental illness can run in families. Some people may be more likely to develop mental health problems due to their genes. It could be inherited from parents or grandparents. Now ask yourself "What kind of gene runs in my family?
2. Your Type of Environment: The environment you live in can have a big impact on your mental health. For example, if you live in a stressful or unsafe environment, it can make it harder to cope. You will never have a relaxed mind. This in turn torments you mentally. The time your brain is supposed to use and think about how to be productive will be used to ponder on the toxicity of your environment.
3. Trauma: Experiencing trauma, such as abuse or violence, can have a lasting impact on your mental health. If you doubt me, go and ask those in a toxic marriage.
4. Stress: Prolonged stress can take a toll on your mental health. It depends on how you manage stress. Some people aren't good at stress management. Once they are exposed to stress, they will be disoriented.
