Light is a funny thing when it comes to sleeping. Either at night or during the day we all know that when it is not dark it is harder to sleep.

I recently moved places to an apartment that is overlooking the ocean (I know terrible view right) and I love it. Sunrises at about 5:45am each morning and it shines directly into my room, Eye mask had to come out but I want to tell you a few secrets about making your room pitch black for the best night sleep you will have in years.

1. all devices that have a light on them (i.e T.V, Charger, Xbox, Playstation, etc) cover with painters tape. It's blue and doesn't leave any sticky residue on the devices. You might need a few layers but that's the first step.
2. I remember back when I was going to bed around 4 am each morning I would get a solid 1 hour before the sun would poke its head thru my curtains so invest in blackout curtains.
3. garbage backs taped on the window act like curtains so I did that for many years also.
4. Eye masks are essential. It takes some getting used to wearing them and falling asleep but once you get the hang of it they are the best.

Don’t let a cloud of negativity and doubt hover over you when your in bed. When you are thinking you are creative brain waves that keep you awake. To fall asleep is to do nothing.... and even the art of “trying” to fall asleep is still you doing something. So feel thinking nothing, feel emptiness of thought.

Have you ever had a bad night's sleep?
Only to struggle through the day, angry maybe a bit frustrated at everyone. Later go home and look forward to a good night's sleep to get back on track and the... BAM you can't sleep at all. You literally have anxiety about getting to sleep "ohh I hope I can sleep", "last night was a disaster please can tonight be better", "if that dog doesn't shut up imma tape a sock to its mouth"

Anxiety kills sleep. Plain and simple. You cure the anxiety, you cure the sleep problem.

The only problem is that it's sometimes much easier to write that down like this then actually get rid of your anxiety.

That's where meditation comes in. Meditation is like taking your brain waves from an active mode to a relaxed docile mode. IN this mode the brain has a better chance of drifting off to sleep/ a better chance at the melatonin to do its job.

Try it out tonight. Suffering from insomnia??

Sleep Tracking - What is it? What Apps to use? How to understand the results?

This was my night's sleep last night. Going, to be honest here and said I stayed up way too late and watched the movie "Blade Runner: 2049" (great movie by the way).

Sleep tracking is a new wave of data-driven apps coming onto the market that offer the user the experience to understand how they were sleeping during the night.

Because we are often unconscious when we sleep (haha go figure right) we can not track it ourselves. This mobile apps track our sleep transmit non-audible sound or use motion sensors to track every little movement or noise we make during our time of rest.

When you know how to read them you can even be more accurate that the app at knowing how you will feel that day. Most apps will break up your sleep cycles into basic metrics and then off the premium versions for greater understandings and patterns that you fall into.

I wrote a previous article about how 8 hours of sleep might not always amount to 8 hours of great sleep. Depending on your schedule during the day a lot of different factors change the way you hit the pillow at the end of your day.

One common misconception about sleep is that you should as the full 8 hours without waking up. False!
The body goes thru a lot of changes during your sleep that can cause you to wake up. The heat of your body, noises that cause the fight or flight response, Being too cold,

SO take my sleep last night. Do you see the drop off to deep sleep around 3am then the incredible spike from 3;30am to 4am.

We call that NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep, in this time period the body drops to its lowest temperature. Mother nature actually helps facilitate this by 3:30am of any day being the coldest moment of every day. That sudden spike to then have me awake is the body releasing HGH (Human Growth Hormone) rapidly repairing my body with any ongoing issues, repairing and damage I might have caused my body that day and its general detoxification.

You can see at the start of my sleep I must have been about for some 15 to 20 minutes which usually indicates that my melatonin production was kicked into gear but my brain was having a hard time winding down after watching a movie.

As much as I love this photo I do have to condemn it a bit...... try to keep your bed for 3 things //Sleeping, S*x & Meditation// Your body is a learning machine - if you are constantly watching Netflix or on your phone before you sleep or during the day your body starts to create neural pathways connecting your bed with brain activity - genuinely making it hard for you to fall asleep when you are needing too. 😴😴😴

8 Hours Sleep & Still Tired 🤷‍♀️

Sleep quality is an important thing to start tracking. I first found ut when I started to track my own sleep that when I was thinking I was getting 8 hours of sleep, I was getting a lot less.

My first sleep tracks I was going to bed around 10pm and waking up at 6am.

8 hours right.

I should be sweet with the day. Do my thing, be fully awake.

it wasn't until I saw my sleep quality

it read - "56%"

That can't be right, can it?

Well, I'm here to say that it is a bigger problem than some might think.

I recently subscribed to a few Facebook insomniac and sleep deprivation groups and was astounded to see the attitude towards not sleeping.

some people joked about the topic, which I can see the humour in it but more I was worried about the people suffering.

Make sure you don't do high-intensity things like driving a car or machinery while sleep deprived. I know we all have done it but if you can avoid it I recommend it. If it's between you and another person to drive to the gym and they have had a full night sleep I recommend getting them to drive. Being sleep deprived is like being over the limit from consuming alcohol.

Roommate Post:

A lot of people liked my last roommate post on Instagram so I thought I'd update you again.

Imagine me running a sleep & insomnia preventing business and handing out advice to my roommate who takes none of it on board.

Anyway, the story is that she had an iced coffee at 10:30 pm last night. Enough caffeine to keep any person awake for hours on end. Sure enough, I woke around 4 am to start my day and who did I see, wide awake alert and playing video games again ... you guessed it.

Caffeine consumption is fine during the day but make sure there is a time limit.

A good rule of thumb is no caffeine consumption after 4pm this way the caffeine burns itself out before your 9/10/11pm bedtimes.

And i can already see people reading this being like
"Ohh caffeine doesn't affect me like it does other people"
Trust me you might not be buzzing off the walls like some people but it sure affects your brain waves.
