Dispositor – Points to Remember
By Nagaraj Iyer
A dispositor is a Graha which is the Lord of the sign or house which is occupied by another Graha.
For eg, If Venus is in Gemini, then Mercury is the dispositor Graha.
In Vedic astrology, dispositor is also called “Poshaka” Graha which means the “nourisher” because it tends to aid the occupant of the house.
The power of a Graha is identified through the dispositor. For eg, if Lagna Lord Jup is in Leo sign and if Sun who is the lord of Leo (dispositor) is in 12th house, then from that position itself we can understand that Jup is not that powerful.
Another example, if Jup is in 2nd house, then we can say that it is good for prosperity or savings. But if the 2nd house Lord is Mars and Mars is placed in Cancer. We know that Cancer is the debilitated sign for Mars. Hence in this case Jupiter loses its strength to produce beneficial results, resulting in less prosperity for the person. On the other hand if Mars is in Capricorn, which is its exalted house, the power of Mars will be extended to Jupiter, and the potential of 2nd house will be enhanced.
One important point to remember here is that normally the Graha occupying the sign donates its energy to the dispositor. If Mars is in the sign of Venus, then Venus is the dispositor of Mars. In this case Venus will start acting like Mars (will be more demanding, more selfish, more harsh etc)
Most of the Yogas in astrology is based on the benefic placement of dispositor Graha. The perfect example is Neecha bhanga Raja Yoga, that we shall discuss separately.
