Dispositor – Points to Remember
By Nagaraj Iyer

A dispositor is a Graha which is the Lord of the sign or house which is occupied by another Graha.

For eg, If Venus is in Gemini, then Mercury is the dispositor Graha.
In Vedic astrology, dispositor is also called “Poshaka” Graha which means the “nourisher” because it tends to aid the occupant of the house.

The power of a Graha is identified through the dispositor. For eg, if Lagna Lord Jup is in Leo sign and if Sun who is the lord of Leo (dispositor) is in 12th house, then from that position itself we can understand that Jup is not that powerful.

Another example, if Jup is in 2nd house, then we can say that it is good for prosperity or savings. But if the 2nd house Lord is Mars and Mars is placed in Cancer. We know that Cancer is the debilitated sign for Mars. Hence in this case Jupiter loses its strength to produce beneficial results, resulting in less prosperity for the person. On the other hand if Mars is in Capricorn, which is its exalted house, the power of Mars will be extended to Jupiter, and the potential of 2nd house will be enhanced.

One important point to remember here is that normally the Graha occupying the sign donates its energy to the dispositor. If Mars is in the sign of Venus, then Venus is the dispositor of Mars. In this case Venus will start acting like Mars (will be more demanding, more selfish, more harsh etc)

Most of the Yogas in astrology is based on the benefic placement of dispositor Graha. The perfect example is Neecha bhanga Raja Yoga, that we shall discuss separately.

Mandi and Gulika. Are they Same?
By Nagaraj Iyer

This is a question which is having lots of debates among the astrologers. Having said that, the one word answer to the above question is “No”. Both Mandi and Gulika are considered to be Non-Luminous Grahas and they are different. Grahas in Vedic astrology is classified as Luminous and Non-Luminous or Chaya Grahas. All the Non-Luminous Grahas are considered to be malefics. Both Mandi and Gulika comes under the Non-Luminous category. There is an interesting Puranic story connecting these two.
Surya or the Sun God had a wife namely Samjna. She was a very devoted wife and through Samjna Surya had three Children. One of them was Yama. Surya was a very powerful God emanating light as always. After many years of marriage, Samjna couldn’t withstand the heat of Surya and she decides to leave him. But since she was very devoted mother, she creates a duplicate of herself from her image called as “Chaya” to take care of her children and Surya.
After Samjna leaving to forest to do penance, Chaya takes care of the children and Surya. Surya didn’t notice anything different. During the course of time, Surya is getting two more children through Chaya and Saturn or Shani is one among them. Thus Shani and Yama are brothers through different mothers and both of them are sons of Surya.
Now coming to Mandi and Gulika. As per the book “Sarvartha Chinthamani” both Mandi and Gulika are different. Mandi is the son of Yama (Yama Putra) and Gulika is the son of Shani (Shani Putra). The calculation for both of them in the horoscope of a person is different. Both of them gives different results especially during the Prasna.
In fact it is said that Mandi indicates all the sin that you may potentially perform in this life. Gulika represents how much of this you did in the past and therefore must suffer from in this life.
